Introduction
School must be a place where students can learn in a safe and secure
environment.
Every student will learn to be accountable and responsible for his or her own
conduct and behavior. The intent of the classroom management plan is to
improve the classroom environment, therefore allowing each student to learn
in the best possible setting.

Theme
A Place for a Physically Active Lifestyle in a Safe Learning Environment.
Establishing Classroom Atmosphere
The atmosphere of my classroom will be conducive to learning and ensuring
a safe environment for my students. Whether we are in the gymnasium, a
classroom, the playground, or on a field, my class will be a positive
environment that will be focused on the students and them becoming
physically active for a lifetime. All students will feel comfortable and know
that they are both physically and emotionally safe when they enter the
classroom. Respect and encouragement will be displayed at all times to
promote a safe and positive environment so that each student can be
successful and enjoy being physically active.
Protocols
Establishing the Rules

Explain why the rules are necessary. Students are far more cooperative
with rules that make sense to them than seemingly arbitrary regulations.

State the rules positively. Whenever possible avoid using the words dont,
not, and no. It is more positive to tell children what to do than what not to
do.

Keep the number of rules to a minimum, generally no more than five.

Post rules in an attractive fashion so they can be seen and read easily.

Make sure the students understand the rules. Depending on the age, first
describe and demonstrate the desired the behavior, then have the
students rehearse the correct behavior.

Provide feedback especially the first time you ask the children to use a
routine, beginning of the school year or semester.

Design, teach, post, and practice the consequences of breaking the rules.

Especially in the beginning, prompt students toward appropriate behavior,

and reinforce appropriate behavior. Let students know when theyve done
something correctly.

The Rules

Treat others the way you want to be treated.

A- act safely

B- be prepared and be positive

C- cooperate with others

D- do your best

Consequences

1st offense: verbal warning as well as me communicating to the student

the desired behavior.
2nd offense: Student will sit out until they can tell me what the issue was
and what they are going to do to fix it.
3rd offense: Student will be removed from activities for the remainder of
the class time. There will also be a meeting between the student and I to
discuss the issues from class and create a behavioral contract outlining
future consequences if appropriate.
4th offense: Parents will be contacted via phone call.
5th offense: Meeting with principal.
o (4th and 5th could vary depending on school policies)
2

o While sitting out or removed from activities, students will be

required to write an apology and/or explanation of why they have
been removed and how they will fix it, whichever is appropriate.
**Depending on the nature and severity of offense, multiple levels of consequences may be
utilized at one time**

Routines
Routines will be a key aspect to my classroom. Routines will be consistent
for every class and my students will know what to do from the time they
enter the gym until the time they leave. These routines will be aimed at
decreasing the amount of time spent sedentary.
Starting and Stopping

Starting and stopping will be done primarily with music. When the music
starts, the activity starts. When the music stops, the activity stops.
If music is not appropriate for the activity, a whistle or cue such as
Freeze Please will be used to start and stop the activity.

Entering and Leaving

Upon entering the gymnasium there will be a DIN (Do It Now) board with a
warm-up activity for the day posted.
Following the warm-up activity students will go to their assigned spot in
the gym. This will be done to take account for everyone in the class
quickly and to be able to get into our activity for the day efficiently.
At the end of class, all students will line up on the end line. The student in
front will lead everyone through (the other students follow) and each
student will tell each other student good job as they give each other
high fives. Similar to the end of most athletic events.

Accidents
In the event of an accident or injury I will have my class continue with the
activity when appropriate. If the injured student is able to stay in class they
will. If they need to go to the nurse I will have the injured student assisted
there by another student when appropriate.
Equipment
3

All equipment will ready at the beginning of each class. When appropriate
students will help pass out equipment and set up games for the quickest set
up time in order for students to be active during more of the class. At the
end of class students will pick up equipment and organize it neatly where I
can put it away in its proper place. All students will treat equipment with care
and use it safely and properly.
Partners and Groups
For partner or group activities, I will have a variety of ways to divide the
students into groups or partners. A few below:

By numbering students off according to the number of groups that are

needed.
By proficiency in the activity or skill being performed. This can be used to
easily adapt the instruction to make it more challenging for some students
and modify for students who are less proficient. This way of partnering or
grouping will also be used for peer teaching lessons.
By birthday: January-June in one group July-December in other group

Water Breaks
Students will be free to get a drink in class whenever it is needed. I
understand the importance of hydration and I want my students to drink
plenty of water. If this is ever a problem, I will change the rule to one at a
time. If there is not a drinking fountain easily accessible, students will be
allowed to bring their own water to class.

Bathroom Use
If a student needs to use the bathroom, they will need permission to go. I will
keep it to one at a time for each gender unless there is an emergency. The
only exception to this rule will be that if a student is sick they can go straight
to the bathroom.

Other Routines

Outdoors
On days or lessons that will be outside, I will keep the routines as close to
normal as I can. When appropriate I will skip the warm-up activity in the gym
and take role. We will then go outside for that days lesson.
4

Late Start Days

On late start days or days when the class period is shortened, I will keep
routines as close to normal as possible. When it is appropriate I will skip the
warm-up activity and do role. Following role I will get into an activity the
students are familiar with to make the most of the time we do have.
Game Days
On game days for student-athletes I will allow for them to substitute less
strenuous physical activity for the planned activity when appropriate.

Getting Off To A Good Start

Describe and Demonstrate
As a part of getting off to a good start, I will both describe and demonstrate
the appropriate rules and routines that will be expected or part of the class
each day. This will be done to both reinforce the rules and routines as well as
ensure a safe environment for every student to be successful in. The rules
and daily routines including entering and leaving the gym, water breaks,
accidents, starting and stopping, and the setup and use of equipment will all
be covered in detail. I will ensure each student understands these aspects
through physical demonstration or through a paper and pencil quiz. This will
be a very important part of my class as this is the foundation of having a
safe and productive environment.

Practice
At the beginning of the year we will spend the first few days practicing all of
the routines we will be using throughout the year. The detail and explanation
will vary depending on the age of the class.
Providing feedback
Providing feedback will be a constant in my class. I will keep feedback
positive and concise. If a student is struggling with multiple parts of an
activity or skill, I will compliment them and then focus on trying to correct
only one part of the activity or skill at a time. This will allow the student to
maintain a positive attitude while making adjustments and getting better at
the skill or activity. I will always remain positive in my feedback and focus my
students successes, not their failures.
Setting Performance Standards
5

After the first week of class, students will be able to perform and explain the
standards they are expected to meet. These will include the rules, the daily
routines of entering and leaving the gym, water breaks, accidents, starting
and stopping, and the setup and use of equipment. If students are not
meeting these standards I will describe and demonstrate them again. I will
continue to practice them with the students until students fully understand
and can perform the activities expected of them.
Maintaining consistency
Maintaining consistency will be very important to me and my classroom. I will
be consistent with everything I do in my classroom. I will remain consistent in
expecting my students to be honest, respectful, and positive because they
will receive the same treatment from me. I will be sure that my students
know what is expected of them to earn good grades. I will keep my grading
unbiased and fair. I will always behave in a professional manner that will
allow my students enjoy success in my Physical Education Program.
