Lines and Line Segments

You can find lines and parts of lines in shapes and objects.

A point is an A line is a set

exact location of points that
in space.
goes without
end in both
directions.

A line
segment
is part of a
line with two
endpoints.

Parallel lines
never meet or
cross. They
are always the
same distance
apart.

Intersecting
lines cross at
one point.

Write the name for each.

Angles
An angle is formed by two rays that have the same endpoint.
The endpoint is the vertex of the angle. Three types of angles
are right angles, acute angles, and obtuse angles.

A ray is part of a
line that has one
endpoint and goes
forever in one
direction.

A right angle
forms a square
corner.

An acute angle
is open less
than a right
angle.

An obtuse angle is
open more than a
right angle.

Lines, line segments, or rays that meet or cross at a right angle

are perpendicular.
Tell if each angle is right, acute, or obtuse.

Quadrilaterals
Quadrilaterals are polygons with four sides. Some quadrilaterals
have special names because of their sides. Some have special
names because of their angles. Here are some examples.

Parallelogram
Opposite sides
are equal and
parallel.

Rectangle
Parallelogram
with four right
angles

Rhombus
Parallelogram
with four equal
sides

Square
A rhombus
with four right
angles

Trapezoid
Exactly one
pair of
parallel sides

Write as many names as possible for each quadrilateral.

Triangles
Triangles are polygons with three sides.
Triangles can be named by the lengths of their sides.

Equilateral Triangle
All sides are the
same length.

Isosceles Triangle
At least two sides
are the same length.

Scalene Triangle
No sides are
the same length.

Triangles can also be named by their angles.

Right Triangle

One angle is a right angle.

Acute Triangle

Obtuse Triangle

All three angles are acute.

One angle is obtuse.

1. Tell if the triangle is equilateral, isosceles, or scalene.

2. Tell if the triangle is right, acute, or obtuse.
