I have always found NASA to be a very trustworthy source.

For starters,
NASA(National Aeronautics and Space Administration) is a non-profit
organization and thier main mission is to to pioneer the future in space
exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research. I believe NASAs
motives have nothing to do with money, hence being nonprofit, and
everything to do with expanding our knowledge on the science of Earth and
outer space. The NASA Documentary Lecture on geo-engineering and climate
change is an example of NASAs dedication to their mission of expanding
knowledge about Earth. More importantly this documentary serves as
confirmation of NASAs credibility and true intentions. In this documentary
NASA has done research using data they got from their own satellites in
addition to using public data to show trends in climate change. The main
speaker in this documentary is Riley Duren. After graduating with a
bachelors in electrical engineering at Auburn University, Riley worked at
NASA in various positions for different projects such as a metrology systems
engineer for the Shuttle Radar Topography mission and chief engineer for the
Kepler mission. He later became Chief Systems Engineer for NASAs Earth
Science Directorate at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. He is also
an investigator for the Megacities Carbon Project and the Principal
Investigator of the Understanding User Needs Project at NASA. To put it
blatantly, At his time at NASA, Riley Duren has gravitated towards carbonmonitoring and is very knowledgeable on the topic of global warming and
climate change.
In this documentary many different types of engineering proposals to reduce
carbon dioxide in the air were introduced and scrutinized. One idea was
building mirrors in space to reflect income sun rays. This idea was dissected
into its potential pros and cons. It was stated that it wasnt a terrible idea but
reflection was dangerous and had unexpected affects on people around the
world. Throughout the entire documentary global consequences were
emphasized. It was clear that the benefit of the general public was in mind. I
believe that the fact that NASA is taking into consideration the well being of
the people makes them more credible.

Figure 1: A Giant Space Mirror

Another idea was giant machines to filter carbon dioxide out of the air. This
idea was named a possible solution but very timely and expensive. The fact
that they actual saw the benefit of the filter machine instead being
immediate shot down showed that NASA actually take seemly ridiculous
ideas as possible solutions to global warming. This shows that NASA is openminded and is open to new ideas. This makes NASA credible because it

shows that they are not bias towards any ideas.

Figure 2: Carbon Dioxide Air Filtration Machine

Another idea was dumping iron filing into the ocean where plankton feed
which would results in the growth of the plankton population. The plankton
would absorb carbon dioxide emissions in the air. This idea was shot down
because how this would affect the marine ecosystem. Having taking natural
systems into consideration shows that NASA cares about how alternative
energy technology affects the ecosystem. This makes them most trustworthy
in the eyes of people who care about the environment.

Figure 3: Feeding Plankton Iron Filings

Another idea was pumping aerosols into the air creating a layer in the air
which absorbs incoming heat from the sun and lowering the temperature of
the Earth. This idea was shot down because of how quickly the aerosol would
dissipate in the atmosphere but more importantly how the aerosol would be
controversial between different nations. Because NASA took this into
consideration shows that NASA has everyone in their best interest. This
makes NASA more credible because it shows that their end goal involves the
benefit and well-being of people on a global scale.

Figure 4: Pumping Aerosol into the Atmosphere

The final idea that was reviewed in the documentary was increasing deer
population to decrease grass which would slow the rate of snow melting in
the winter. This idea was guiding into a more practical idea of planting more
trees. It was stated that finding a way to plant enough trees fast enough to
cancel out the usage of fossil fuels was an important ongoing study. This
shows that rather than bashing radical ideas NASA is trying to find a solution
out of every proposal. This shows that NASA main target is preventing global
warming and nothing else. This in turn makes NASA more credible because
they show that they have good intentions.

Figure 5: How Deer Grazing Affects Surface Albedo(Earths

Reflectivity)
Note: In the picture above Norway has a higher surface Albedo than Finland
because of a higher amount of deer grazing. The white color of snow reflects
light energy better than other colors.

To further my point on NASAs credibility, at the end of the documentary the

crowd was allowed to ask questions and it was filmed and was part of the
documentary. This shows that NASA wants to hear what the people have to
say and is open to criticism. It was even emphasized that all of these
proposals need public scrutiny and these ideas should never be kept in the
dark.
I believe many people should listen to NASA because they have a very openminded approach to solutions for global warming and their message was that
the process of overcoming this feat of global warming starts from us, the
people, taking action. NASA also seems to have done their research by

backing up all of their statements and responses with solid facts and
research. I support the statement that is NASA documentary is a very
credible and appropriate source for this blog post.
