Daily Lesson Objective:
While at each center rotation students are expected to complete 2 of 3 rotations and all of the work associated
with the center rotations.

Students will do centers to better understand the coastal region of
North Carolina.
Prior Knowledge:
Students have already done some work with the regions of North Carolina. Students should be able to tell the
teacher any facts they know about the regions, most importantly the coastal region of North Carolina.
Activity

Description of Activities and Setting


Ask students what they already know about North Carolina. Students
can give answers about all of North Carolina. Then teacher will ask
students to focus on what they know about the coastal region of North
Carolina.

Teacher will go over the center rotations for the lesson.


Center 1: Tuscarora Legends: students will read 2 different legends and
then write their own legends.
Center 2: Mt. Olive video: students will watch a video about Mt. Olive
Pickles and then answer questions on a worksheet.
Center 3: Opposite Side of Mt. Olive worksheet: students will explain
what the idioms mean.
Students will go to work at centers in groups. Teacher will walk around
helping students and asking questions.
Students will write their own Tuscarora Legend independently as well
as complete both sides of the Mt. Olive worksheet.

Students will be assessed on their Tuscarora Legend as well as both sides of the Mt.
Olive worksheet. Students are expected to have finished at least 2 of the 3 tasks
100%. Students are expected to get more than half the answers correct.
Students will come back together as a class on the carpet. Teacher will
ask students what they learned about the coastal region of North
Carolina. Teacher will have some students share their Tuscarora
Legends. Only students that would like to share can share. If time
allows students and teacher will go over Mt. Olive worksheet and Idiom
worksheet.

Students who are not on the same level can ask
other group mates for help or ask the teacher for
help. Students who finish early are able to go back
and add more detail to their Tuscarora Legend or
they can read silently.

This lesson is meant for multiple small groups. This
lesson can be done as a class but each rotation will take
one class period to be done. The students will be able to
complete more if the lesson is done as a small group
center rotation.
