The
i-Pad announcements are really taking a toll on classroom instruction. In addition,
the reward incentives so far this year (Doub Woods and Minute to Win It) will have
taken place during the same class, red for 6 th grade. Someone needs to monitor the
schedule closely when scheduling events for every grade level.
As for interruptions by student behavior, that will be addressed later in survey.
i. Internet connections at the school vary from day to day, and I am not sure how
much control or say administration has in this area.
j. As an administrator, I would ask for input from the staff as to what areas they
believe are not environmentally healthy. Temperature control in the classroom is
the only area I can think would be an issue. I believe the staff needs to hear from
an administrator why the room temperatures are not consistence when a great
change in temperature occurs.
e. I believe this has been an area of growth for Hicks, but many teachers are not
aware of the notifications going out to parents. I receive a voice mail and text
message about events, but two colleagues I spoke to did not receive the messages.
I think this may have to do with how they are set up to be notified about school
related weather closing. This is just about communicating effectively to staff.
f. I feel the teachers need to communicate more with parents and make the parents
feel like they have a say in their childs education. Oftentimes, we, as teachers,
are quick to judge and have preconceived ideas. Teachers need to be reminded to
stay opened mind and discuss strategies with parents that will make parents feel
part of the decision making process which will open the door to more parental
support.
g. and h. These are challenging areas to address and improve, in my opinion. The
more positive news we can get to the community, the better support we should
receive.
i. Once again, I believe this is about communicating. Teachers may or may not
read the weekly schedule, but do they understand the AVID and Magnet Nights are
to explain to parents the different opportunities available to their child. Should we
go the parents turf and discuss ways parent can improve the learning
environment in their homes. Some of this may have to do with pure ignorance and
not a choice on the parents part. We, as educators, need to make parents feel
comfortable speaking to us and for the parents to know we are not judging them in
any manner.
I believe this is a great area for the faculty to address in a CFIP meeting. What is a
group decision? School-wide, departmental, grade level?
What are the problems that need to be solved as a group?
Who are the effective leaders at Hicks and how do you become one?
Until administrators and teachers truly understand these questions, the ratings are
questionable.
Another area of concern is when we have rules or guidelines and exceptions are
made. I know often when there is an incentive trip, all students do not have to
follow the guidelines announced. I understand that admin has the final call, but I
believe some of this can be avoided with better communication.
Example Skating trip, once permission slips are distributed, have an adult make an
announcement on the morning announcements daily, stating permissions slips have
ben distributed and it is the students responsibility to get one from their HR teacher
if they were absent. Also, emphasis the date and time the slip must be returned.
Couldnt we do an alert now and text message to inform parents as well. Field trips
are a major controversy with students and parents. The more we can do to avoid
conflict, the better for students, parents, and staff!
Another concern is the type of response you will receive from some admin when you
ask questions or have a concern. I will be perfectly honest with you. Many teachers
are fearful to address Ms. Buckwalter. I often will come to you before I will go to her
and there are many staff members who feel the same way. I do not have a
suggestion for this one.
Since we are reviewing the TELL survey this year, the percentage should increase in
future years!
