Around Hicksville

Wow Bob,

Thanks for the publicity in the Newsletter. Cannot tell you how much I appreciate your including my
Geo Washington story. Hopefully someone sees and remembers the classic "spitball." Those were the
best days of my life. How I miss Hicksville.
Wish I knew you back in the day!!!!

Julia White Weiss 1963

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hi,
Thanks for the newsletter. I look forward to reading and seeing pictures each month. Fantastic job! Any
news of a 1962 55th reunion in 2017 or a 1962 Florida reunion. I live in Coconut Creek. Retired last
year and not bored. Attached is a picture of my son, Stephen and me.

Thanks for the photo. You know the mind is a funny thing. I remember going to a 10th and 20th reunion
when most of our kids were still young. We would all whip out pictures of our kids and everyone would
Google over each photo. I think I have the same mindset that has been fairly consistent for the past 30 or
so years. You said, "attached is a picture of my son, Stephen and me. My mind already created a picture

and when I saw the photo, I was expecting a smaller person. You get my drift??? Nice picture and I'm
glad you get a chance to share time together. I'm lucky that my daughter and grand daughter live close
by and we can share time together. My wife died of Alzheimers back in September of 2013. My son, his
wife and my two grandsons live in Wake Forest after relocating from Bethpage earlier this year. I don't
see them.
Thanks for sharing.
love yah bob
You saw the photo of the reunion committee in the current newsletter having breakfast together. In a
correspondence from Karen, they are planning on a 55th in 2017, so look forward to a great reunion.
Hey Bob,
Thanks for the history of you and your family. LOL! This is my youngest son, 41 yrs. old, single, and
lives in California. Yikes, I am that old?! We went on a road trip last year and also went to Vegas (for
my 70th). My oldest son, Paul, would have been 43. He had a surfing accident here in FL and died
2/26/02; sad and beyond belief. Well, need to get outside and do some gardening.
Regards,
Elaine
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dear HixNews
I cannot express my gratitude enough for the wonderful job you have all done on our Newsletter. Living
3,000 miles away, I would have lost touch with my Alma Mater if it were not for the tireless efforts of
the entire staff at the Hix News. Keep up the good work!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Thanks for those kind words, Art. I, too, live 3,000 miles away from Hicksville (also in California).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dear Readers
I was just working on a presentation that surrounds the Hicksville High School Hall of Fame

and reminded myself that I am limited in finding photos for many who are in classes beyond 1980. I
have requested, on several occasions, for someone from each class to act
as an official scanner when I need photos for the newsletter.
I'm going to send out some new requests to see if I get a response. I think they might have a copy of all
years at the Hicksville Library. I did have a contact at the library who was helping us accumulate the
listing for our proposed Vietnam Memorial at the Junior High. I'm going to try to contact her to see if
she is able to scan photos if the library has all issues. Any suggestions from you will be helpful.
Thanks

Just wanted to share an interesting note. Two weeks ago my sister, Shari Notov Zimmerman '70, my
brother Dan Notov '78 and me, Sandy Notov saw Billy Joel in Colorado where we all now live. Billy
gave a shout out to Chuck Arnold who was in the audience!! Said he was his music teacher and Chuck
always knew Billy had talent. Talk about a small world. The concert was amazing and made us all proud
to have gone to HHS!!

Once you view the video, I'm hoping you find it interesting enough to include in a link in the Hicksville
High Newsletter. I know you've been gathering information related to the Vietnam war and HHS
veterans who served. This highly decorated Navy Helicopter Squadron is little known for its
accomplishments. Having served in this squadron.....with its men and with its various missions.....under
any circumstances.....is the reason you very seldom, if ever, see me without my Seawolves ballcap. I am
proud to have served with such courageous, battle-tested comrades. The trailer link below will give you,
in part, a glimpse of what a typical day might have been like. Can't wait to see the full
documentary. Follow the instructions to the trailer; password: hal3

want to be able to share this film with our children and grandchildren down the road and would like you

My physical location is in Levittown, about two blocks from the Hicksville line. My wife is divorcing
me so that info is moot. I graduated with the class of 1970. Ray What's-his-name, the principal, wanted
to keep me from graduating with my class. Then I reminded him that that meant I'd be coming back for
another year!

Thanks for the update. Sorry about the divorce. Ray Rusch was principal at the time. Was coach Howie
Bowers still there in 1970??? I missed a track practice after finishing 2nd in the 100 yard dash and 3rd in
the 220 yard dash at the Nassau County trials. Bowers kicked me off the track team 3 days before the
Nassau Championships at Great Neck South that was held on June 4, 1960. I pleaded with Bowers who
wouldn't listen. This was the same coach who would kick a guy off the football team if he saw you
holding hands with a girl. My father who ran track at NYU back in 1937/38/39 was a quarter miler and
his 4 x 400 relay team placed 2nd in the Penn Relays one year. Anyhow my dad called Leon J. Galloway
who was principal (I think before Rusch) and suggested that perhaps the penalty for missing a practice
was a little harsh. Galloway concurred and on Thursday, 2 days before the big meet, I was reinstated. Of
course I practiced Thursday and did a lot of stretching and 3/4 sprints on Friday. Got to Great Neck
South on Saturday and finished 4th in the counties in both the hundred and the two twenty.

Yeah, Raymond Rusch! Your story is terrific. I'm glad it all worked out in the end. I don't know if
bowers was there in 1970. I had very little contact with the coaches. but my sister, Irene, class of 1960,
had leon Galloway for a teacher when she was there.

current emails! When is your birthday so I can send you one!! You can't send yourself one!!
Mary Ann
Editor Notemine is December 3rd and Ill be 73 and am elated to still be mobile.
Bob
I will remember your birthday because it's the same day as my daughters. A very good day to have a
birthday. Sorry to hear you are having Heath issues. Keeping mobile is the key. Even with pain and the
assistance of a walking device as long as you can move... That's important!
It looks like you are living in a one story house. Hopefully that helps. Stairs are just awful when you
have issues. I broke my foot 2 years ago and it was just miserable. I had a huge cast and couldn't get up
the stairs for two weeks until they put me in a boot. I had to sleep on the couch and take sponge baths!
Worst time of my life! We sold that house in July and are having a house built with the master

bedroom on the first floor. Wider doors, zero entry shower, etc. going to be ready to age in place when
the time comes. Getting old sucks as they say but the alternative is worse!
Take care of yourself and hopefully the treatments you are getting will relieve the pain and you'll feel
better!

In The News
When Trump purchased and rebuilt Mar-A-Lago, the grand mansion and estate in Palm Beach,
Florida, he got into a dispute with the city fathers who are well known for being strict on zoning
regulations. Trump put up a 50-foot flag pole even though 30 feet is the maximum allowed. The city
imposed a $1,000 per day fine while Trump and city argued back and forth. Finally, when the fine had
reached a total of $120,000 Trump proposed a solution. He would donate that amount to
veteran's organizations, would move the flag to a different spot in front of the mansion, and would
only use a 30 foot flag pole. The city agreed so Trump brought in the company that does his golf
course construction, had them build a 20-foot high grassy hill, and put the 30-foot flag pole on top of
that.

People Looking For People

Bob
My birthday is March 24th and email is (concealed). I tried sending an email to: editors@hixnews.com

Fred
Editors@hixnews.com is valid. Roger tried to send me something the other day at bufbob@juno.com
and got a similar "failure to deliver" notice. Try again and see if it gets through. Your email is what we
have on file so no change is required. I added your birthday. Will forward your request to Henry for
placement in the people looking for people file. Hope you are well.

Hello, My name is Joe Glovack. I did not go to Hicksville H. S., but I am interested in contacting a
woman who did graduate in 1965. I hope you can help me, if it's not too much trouble. I would really
appreciate it.
Her name, in HS was SUSAN SCHULTES. Her address was 58 Edward Avenue, Hicksville, NY.
She is listed in the 1965 Yearbook. I would really like to have a contact with her in any way I can. I last
saw her in 1972. I had recently separated from the U.S. Navy and lived in Brooklyn, NY. My phone
number is 516-465-2056 and I now reside in Bethpage. My email is hwfiveoret@msn.com
Please try to help me out. I would really like to know how she is now and whatever became of her. It is
so important to me, to get closure. I hope she is attending the reunion. Thank you.

Joe
I dont remember the name nor the person.

Recipes

Shepherds Pie Twice-Baked Potatoes

Makes: 6 servings
Ingredients:
6 large russet potatoes, scrubbed
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1/2 pound ground lamb (or beef)
sea salt (to taste)
1/4 teaspoon celery seed
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon sherry vinegar
1/2 cup red onions, diced
1/2 cup carrots, diced
1/4 cup radishes, diced
1/4 cup celery, chopped
black pepper (to taste)
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
3 teaspoons fresh marjoram leaves, minced

2 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup whole milk
Directions:
1. Position a rack in the top third of the oven and pre-heat to 400 F.
2. Poke russet potatoes all over with a fork. Carefully set potatoes directly on oven rack. Bake for 60-70
minutes, or until potatoes are easily pierced with a fork. Set potatoes aside to cool and leave oven on.
3. Meanwhile, make the filling. Add the vegetable oil to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Break
the lamb (or beef) up and add it to the pan. Sprinkle generously with sea salt, as well as celery seed and
garlic powder. Cook lamb until nicely browned, 6-8 minutes. Remove lamb to a bowl and turn heat to
medium.
4. Add the sherry vinegar to the skillet and scrape up any brown bits. Add the onions and cook until
translucent, 5 minutes. Stir in the carrots, radishes, and celery, along with a pinch each sea salt and
pepper. Saut, stirring often, for 5 minutes. Cover, turn heat to low, and cook until vegetables are tender,
about 5 minutes more. Toss with Worcestershire sauce and 1 teaspoon marjoram leaves, and set aside.
5. Slice the top third off the cooked potatoes, reserving tops. Hollow out each potato, reserving the
scooped out bits of potato, to leave a 1/4-inch thick wall all around. In a large bowl, mash the scooped
out potato bits with the butter and milk, until smooth. Add 1 teaspoon marjoram and plenty of sea salt
and pepper, to taste.
6. Fill the hollowed out potato skins with lamb mixture and cover with a dollop of mashed potatoes.
Press the potatoes down slightly and then use a spoon to create peaks and valleys on the top. Sprinkle
the remaining teaspoon of marjoram leaves over potatoes.
7. Set stuffed potatoes on a rimmed baking sheet and slide into the 400 F oven. Bake for 20-30 minutes,
or until filling is bubbling and the peaks of the mashed potatoes are a rich golden brown. Cool briefly;
then serve.
