Gapminder World

Step 1
Google Gapminder World and click on the link to the Gapminder World Website.

Step 2
Wait for the page to load.

Step 3
Once the page has loaded you will see a bubble chart. Click on Play and notice how the
bubble chart shifts.

Task 1
Discuss the following with the person sitting next to you.
(a) What does each bubble represent?
(b) What does the different colours represent?
(c) Why are some bubbles bigger/smaller than the rest? What does the size of the bubble
represent?
(d) What does the x-axis represent?
(e) What does the y-axis represent?
(f) What is happening when you click Play?

Step 4

Select Australia in the panel on your right. Click Play again.

You should get something like this.

Discuss this with the person sitting next to you.


(a) What does this bubble chart tell us about life expectancy and income per person over the
years?
(b) In your opinion, does the life expectancy correlates to income per person?

Select two other countries and click Play again.

Task 3
Fill in the table below by answering the following questions:
(a) What is the life expectancy of Australia, Country 1 & Country 2 at 1800, 1900 &
2013?

Download As Excel Spreadsheet.

Open up the excel spreadsheet.

Scroll to the right and search for the data values for Australias life expectancy from 20002013. Copy these values and paste it in a new excel document.

Step 12
Based on the other two countries that you have selected in Step 6, copy and paste the data
values for that countrys life expectancy from 2000-2013.

1. Calculate the mean, median and mode for the life expectancy of:
a. Austalia
b. Your chosen country
c. How close are the mean, median and mode of the diff countries. What does this mean?
2. What are the formulas to calculate mean, median & mode in Excel?
3. Using these formulas, calculate the mean median and mode for the life expectancy of:
a. Austalia
b. Your chosen country
Are your answers similar to Question 1?
4. What are the formulas to calculate the Interquartile Range:
a. by hand
b. in Excel

5. What are the formulas to calculate the Standard Deviation:
