Drop Practical
Time:
100 minutes
Additional Information:
Students will be required to go
outside to complete this
practical activity
Activity:
Mark the Roll
Introduce the class to the topic of force and
write the following learning objectives on
the board:
To discuss the different types of
forces we see everyday
To identify how we can manipulate
forces
Activity:
To introduce the topic of forces, create a
mind map on the whiteboard with all the
students pre-existing ideas on forces.
This can include some misconceptions which
will be reiterated as a class.
Teaching Cues:
Ensure all students have their
workbooks to work out of as well as
their laptops to access their online
textbook.
Activity:
Appendix 1.
Students will be required to write some
notes as an introduction to forces, once they
have completed this they will be able to
complete a group practical activity.
Teaching Cues:
Students will be required to take notes
in their workbooks on the different
types of forces, this will use some
definitions as well as some images.
Appendix 2.
Practical Write up of the egg drop task.
Activity:
After completing their introduction on
forces, students will be applying these new
ideas with the egg drop experiment.
Students will be put into teams of 4 and
required to build a device which will cushion
the landing of an egg from a 5m drop. They
will have 25 minutes to construct this.
Activity:
To finish up this practical activity, students
will be required to finish their write up as
homework and submit it next Tuesday.
Remind the students that they will have an
astronomy test next week and to complete
their revision sheets to assist them.
Teaching Cues:
What are forces?
Where do we see forces?
What are some different types
of forces?
Can we measure force?
Teaching Cues:
How do we make the egg slow
down while its falling?
Do we need to cushion the fall
of the egg?
How fast will the egg fall
without the device?
How fast does it fall with the
device?
Teaching Cues:
Ensure all students have been given
their practical write up sheet, and they
understand what is expected of them
in completion of this task.
Give students your email address if
they need any assistance with study or
homework tasks.
