The Allegory of the Sword and the Wreath in Sterijas
Dramas Glory of Serbia (Torestvo Srbije) and
Kraljevi Markos Dream (San Kraljevia Marka)
Summary
The interpretation of the allegory of the sword and the wreath in two dramas of
celebration Torestvo Srbije (Glory of Serbia) and San Kraljevia Marka (Kraljevi
Markos Dream) by Jovan Sterija Popovi relating them to Jovan Rajis Tragedija
and Emanuil Kozainskijs Traedokomedijashows the developing line of the enlightenment in Serbian drama in the 18 c. and in the first half of the 19 c. The key questions of the poetics of these three authors are, in the first place, the importance of
history and, in the second, significance of education and enlightenment. Regarding
to these poetic facts, on the one hand, and the potential of the allegorical meaning, on
the other, these four dramas can be considered as representatives of three different
types of the philosophy of enlightenment in the domain of the genre of celebration
drama. In the context of the genre, which is dedicated to glorification, these four
dramas celebrate the power of the enlightened mind.
