TREATMENT: OUR LOVE WILL NEVER DIE

I have decided to name my radio drama Our Love Will Never Die. This
symbolizes the fact that although unfortunately one of the characters has
passed their love that they shared for one another will last more than a
lifetime.
BLURB: When husband Matt is diagnosed with a terminal illness Louise has
to make the decision whether she wants to keep her family unit. Or break
it for the sake of her happiness.
PLOT:
Our Love Will Never Die is a single drama; it is a 30-minute episode. My
story is a traditional drama about a couple that went through a difficult
experience in their marriage. 37-year-old Mathew Moore was diagnosed
with lung cancer in 2011, leaving his wife Louise in a difficult position to
look after him as well as take care of the child. This story shares the
struggle Louise went through as the caregiver and we see their story from
her point of view. This 30-minute episode will cover the three years of their
lives from the moment Mathew was diagnosed to the moment he passed.
The story starts at Mathews funeral, as Louise is about to give her speech.
Louise is the narrative voice throughout as it is predominantly about her
and her thoughts. We then flashback to the day their lives changed forever
and they found out the news. As time progresses Mathew feels worthless
as a partner to Louise as well as a father to their 5-year-old son, Jake. This
puts a massive strain on their relationship, as all Louise wants to do is
make Mathews life as easy as possible for him. With tensions high in the
relationship and constant arguments Louise needs to decide whether or
not her love for Mathew has died or not.
FORMAT:
In terms of the format of the story it relates slightly to the
postmodern drama The Blind Mans Confession. This story
incorporates flashback for most of the story which is what I want
to achieve in my drama. It starts with the narrative voice
discussing the trauma he faced, following this, a flashback then
to show the day things changed for him. I have decided to use
this technique as it works well for a post-modern drama. It adds
depth to the story. I also feel by having a narrative voice it gives
the audience the opportunity to get to know the characters
better. Especially if the narrator is the protagonist.
NARRATIVE STRUCTURE:
This is a romantic drama, which I feel would be suitable for the BBC and
their listeners. This is because a lot of the dramas featured on the BBC are
usually for a slightly older target audience. I feel my radio drama is for the
likes of a channel such as BBC Radio 4 Extra & BBC Radio 2. This is
because they target to any age above 30/35. Which I feel my story could
attract. Our Love Will Never Die is a single strand drama. We are only
following one families life focusing on two of the characters, it has a nonlinear structure as I am incorporating flashbacks in order to make it more
interesting to listen to. My characters do still come across an issue
requiring a resolution like in traditional dramas. Louise has to work out if
she wants to stay with Matt or not after everything theyve been through

together. It follows a realist plot. This was my intention as it makes it

more relatable to the audience. If an audience can relate to the story and
the characters then it is likely to have more listeners. I feel the ideas in the
plot are capable of happening to anyone.
CHARACTER PROFILES:
LOUISE MOORE
AGE: 34
ETHNICITY: English
HOMETOWN: Bournemouth
BACKGROUND: Louise is married to Mathew Moore and has been for seven
years now. Five years ago they had their first and only child together, Jake
Moore. She has lived in Bournemouth all of her life, when she was younger
she lived in a single parent family with her father and sister.
CHARACTERISTICS: Louise is a caring character putting herself before
others at all times. This is proven by the fact she gave up her job as an
event manager and became a nursery assistant in order to reduce her
hours to help her family during this tough time.
MATHEW MOORE
AGE: 37.
HOMETOWN: Bournemouth
BACKGROUND: Mathew Moore is the husband of Louise, father of Jake. He
is unemployed and has been for the past year as his illness is slowly
getting worse. Before unemployment he worked as paramedic for 10
years. In 2015 Mathew died from his cancer. He had been struggling with it
for four years.
CHARACTERISTICS: He was very passionate about his job and loved to help
people, similarly to his wife. When he discovered he had lung cancer he
felt worthless to his family. Especially as the illness progressed and he
started to get worse. He was unable to provide in the same way for his
family.
JAKE MOORE
AGE: 5
HOMETOWN: Bournemouth
BACKGROUND: Jake isnt featured in the drama however he is
quite an important character when it comes to the make or break
of this relationship. Jake is five years old, he hasnt been told about
the illness as Louise thinks he is too young to understand. Louise &
Mathew try to keep him protected whilst this ordeal is going on.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
My target audience are a similar audience to BBC Radio 2 & 4 Extra.
People aged 30/35 and over who enjoy the slightly more mature themes.
The audience should expect a relatable story with relatable characters. I
am hoping for this drama to be a slight representation of what it is really
like going through this.
BUDGET:
In terms of the budget, the overall budget for the half an hour episode
would be about 20,000 if I use the studio for an hour. But because I ram
only recording a five minute snippet I will be using the studio for about half
an hour. Making my budget 10,000. This then needs to be distributed
between the actors, equipment and props etc. I plan to bring all my props
myself reducing the amount I need to spend. Because it is a radio drama I
can use anything in order to make a sound effect, as long as it sounds
realistic. Again minimizing the amount I spend on props. This leaves me
with just having to cover the: actors, studio staff, hiring the studio and
equipment costs. I am also writing the drama and planning it myself
therefore expenses on writers etc. are not an issue.
My expenses are as follows from looking at SoundWorks
(http://www.soundworks-oxford.co.uk/rates.html):
Actors x2: estimated at 1000 per actor = 2000
This is so high in order for me to make the most out of the actors and use
them for a good period of time. Having a larger budget for the actors
allows you to be slight more picky when it comes to casting as it gives you
more leeway with the professionals.
Studio hire: 30 per hour
Equipment: included in the studio hire
Total expenses: 2030.
ACTORS/ACTRESSES:
For my drama I will need just two characters. A male character and a
female character to play Louise & Mathew Moore. I am using classmate
Danni Sanger to play Louise & Ruairidh Johnston to play Mathew. Jake isnt
featured in the drama therefore I do not need a character for him. I have
chosen Danni to play Louise because of the fact I feel she will be able to
portray the character well. As well as portray the correct emotions through
to the audience. Ruairidh again I feel will fit the character well. He is
diverse when it comes to getting into a certain character and portraying
them in the correct way, which is what I need in order to get the right
message across.
