"Intensive course tactics" is a CD featuring a new classification of elementary tactical methods
developed by the author, allowing it to categorize the immense diversity of positions containing
hidden opportunities of combinations. This offers a systematic method to sharpen your
combinatorial vision and improve your technique - for any chess player, from novice to expert.
The first thing to do when analyzing a chess position is to look for possible attacking squares squares with unprotected pieces, squares to threaten mate on etc. In the majority of cases, these
different types of squares have one feature in common: the same number of defenders and attackers.
In chess terminology they are commonly called critical squares. Each critical square features a
temporary balance of attacking and defending forces. Completely unprotected squares could also be
referred to as critical, meaning no attack and no defense whatsoever.
In order to seize a critical square, it is necessary to weaken it. To this end you either have to
increase the number of attackers or vice versa, eliminate defenders. This can be achieved by
applying one or several elementary tactical methods.
Example 1.
Tchigorin - Yanovsky, Paris, 1900.

White to move.
Black's position has two important critical squares:
1. f5 - attacked by the white knight g3 and protected
by the black queen;
2. f8 - attacked by the white rook d8 and protected
by the black king.
White wins with the move 1. Qc5 attacking both
critical squares once more.
Connecting several elementary tactical methods together is called a combination - similar to when
atoms of various chemical elements join together and make a molecule.
The multitude of elementary tactical methods can be split up into two large groups: direct hit
methods and support methods. Under direct hit methods we understand tools leading to direct
material or positional advantage (such as checkmate, double attack, discovered attack, skewering
attack, etc). Support methods, in contrast, only prepare a situation on the chess board in which one
of the direct methods can be applied. These tools - deflection, decoying, annihilation of defense,
interception of the line etc. - decrease the number of defenders of an important critical square,
which then can be seized applying one of direct hit methods.

Example 2.
Tid - Delmar, 1896.
White to move.
The critical squares g6 and h5 are the squares of
checkmate threat. One of them can be seized after
decreasing the number of defenders by means of
deflection: 1. Qxh5+ Rxh5 2. Bg6#
There is a small but very important group of universal
tactical methods. Depending on the situation, these
can both be direct hit methods or support methods.
The main tactical tool in this group is the pin.
