Education

Postdoctoral Fellow

Cell Biology and Biophysics

2007-2011

Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA

Advisor: Robert Piper, Ph.D.
Research Area: Characterization of Ubiquitin-Sorting Receptors of the Multivesicular Body
Degradation Pathway in Yeast. Down-regulation of plasma membrane receptors involves their
ubiquitination, transport to endosomes and eventual sorting into lytic compartments. This
research focused on identifying and characterizing the ubiquitin-receptors that operate in the
endocytic pathway.

Doctorate of Philosophy

Bioinoganic Chemistry

2005

Department of Chemistry, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA

Adviser: Sonya Franklin, Ph.D. (Currently employed at Monsanto)
Thesis: Design, Characterization, and Reactivity of Metallopeptides Based on the Metal Binding
Regions of Avian and Mammalian Prion Proteins. Prion proteins are thought to have a function in
protecting neuron from excitotoxicity by binding to copper ions released during synaptic
transmission. However, the role that copper plays in the disease states prion protein, such as
Mad Cow disease, was unknown. This research focused on characterizing the metal binding
properties of model peptides of prion proteins.

Bachelors of Science

Chemistry

Winona State University, Winona, MN

Advisor: David Rislove, Ph.D.
Minor: Biology, Emphasis in Ecology , Concentration Area: Communication Studies
