Be 22252 > N214:E Fully-insulated DURESCA® Busbar Connection System 12 — 170 kV 630 — 8000 A The Problem Everyone concemed with all the range of problems that may arise in the electro- technical field, especially when generating and distributing electrical eneray, realizes the particular importance of medium and high voltage connections to be installed between the various kinds of power plant equipment. itis necessary that these connections meet the following criteria: -they must be extremely reliable; -they must guarantee maximum safety for personnel, equipment and the entire surrounding area; -they must solve any problems arising from the necessity to interconnect a variety of equipment. Experience has shown that planning of these connections is often considered to be of no great importance and is frequently overlooked altogether. However, the choice of the appropriate technology essentially influences the constructural design, layout of buildings, the arrangement and installation of the required equipment, and the time needed for site assembly and erection. Consequently, the right choice of a suitable inter- connection system exerts a direct influence on the economics of the project. THE DURESCA®- SYSTEM a custom-made system The solution: DURESCA® DURESCA® IS THE REGISTERED TRADE NAME FOR THE MGC Conductor Grounding Layer busbar system connections having epoxy-resin vacuum- impregnated paper insulation, equipped with a concentric grounding layer as well as capacitive control wre devices on both ends of the connection. Capacitive Control Grounding Device Bend DURESCA®-Insulation Solid or Tubular Conductor DURESCA®- Insulation Grounding Layer ——_ Protection Tube ————____* DURESCA® busbars are designed and manufactured as straight or bent elements according to the special requirements of the customer. Prior to delivery, each completed ready-to-use busbar is subjected to final tests. Assembly and erection on site is effected by means of simple clamping devices in accordance with MGC Instruction Manual and drawings. DURESCA® busbars are manufactured up to 10 meters in length. Should longer connections be required, the individual elements of the busbar are interconnected on site by flexible or rigid assembly joints protected by insulating cylinders manufactured to the same high standard as the busbars. These cylinders, mounted on site by means of screw-lype fixing devices, are capable of compensating for minor deviations in constructional dimensions. 24 kV and higher At both ends, the busbar is. provided with welded terminals for easy adaptation to all other equipment to be connected. Fixing of the DURESCA® busbar to floors, ceilings or walls is achieved using simple double-C-shaped profile structures and screw- or clamp-type fixing devices; assembly and fixing distances of the elements are chosen to meet the requirements due to short circuit stresses, inherent weight and available space on site. The System: DURESCA® The importance of finding the best possible arrangement for the busbar is equal to the correct choice and installation of the other equipment of a switch plant. Therefore, the busbar system constitutes an independent part of a planned facility. This fact should be kept in mind right from the very first planning stage of the project. Due to the excellent insulating properties of DURESCA®, the diameter of the DURESCA® busbar is very small; even so, high currents may be transmitted with only one conductor per phase. When employing DURESCAS it is not necessary to adhere to a rigid arrangement scheme, therefore new technical solutions can be found and executed which permit the shortest possible distances. In order to give each customer comprehensive information on the scope of advan- tages resulting from the use of DURESCA® busbar connections, MGC has worked out a detailed check-list for handling each project: MGC will advise on use and arrangement of DURESCA® busbar connections; MGC will offer complete engineering, such as - selection of the required type of busbar connections; - calculation of mechanical and electrical design; best layout for busbar connections; - optimum technology for connections to other equipment - determination of type, quantity, and positioning of fixing devices; - elaboration of detailed drawing for assembly and erection for the project in question; MGC will supply busbar connections and accessories, fixing devices and complete documentation; MGC will perform tests according to the standard required; MGC will take care of packing and delivery to site. MGC will perform tests on site, if required. Assembly and erection of the ready-to-use busbar elements can easily be done by the MGC assembly department, or by the customer's own personnel. The Different Types of DURESCA® Busbar Connections MGC has developed special busbar types prepared to meet the most diverse technical and electrical requirements. Prior to delivery all busbars are tested according to IEC 137 standard in the MGC Testing Department. It is to be noted that the insulating layer will not be impaired during assembly and erection. Safety MGC Busbar connections are provided with a concentric grounding layer entirely embedded in the insulating material, guaranteeing complete protection against electrical shock hazards. This grounding layer is designed according to the requirements of the user. Due to their high mechanical strength, and the correct number and placement of the fixing clamps on the insulation of the busbar, even extreme short circuit stresses will be compensated, assuring the reliability and safety of the entire busbar connection system. Phase to phase short circuit faults are practically excluded. DURESCA® busbar connections do not contain any chlorine based material and do not produce toxic gases under heat. In case of fire, DURESCA® busbars are selt- extinguishing. In case of ground fault, no explosion nor fragmentation of the insulation will occur, Range of Connection Possibilities Itis MGC's foremost task to find for each special project the best possible solution for connecting the different equipment. The DURESCA® busbar connection may be made suitable for any type of apparatus, and not vice versa. Consequently, adaptation to other apparatus is considerably simplified, and direct connection without using any intermediate adapting devices is possible. Economical Advantages When comparing the overall costs for cable trays, cable conduits, and the necessary planning of a project with the costs for the DURESCA® busbar connection system for the same project, it will be found that due to its space-saving installation, the use of the DURESCA® system is more economical in the long run In order to profit from all possible advantages offered by the DURESCA® system, the engineer planning a new project should always bear in mind the following important points: ‘Small Bent Radii Bent radii of DURESCA® BUSBAR CONNECTIONS ARE APPROXIMATELY 50% smaller than cable radii. Necessary changes in direction require very little space, resulting in considerably less space requirement for switchgear and other apparatus. In case of installation in new buildings, the space required for DURESCA® busbar systems is also greatly reduced; the same applies when modernizing existing plants, i.e. less space is required for transmission of higher currents. Free Choice of Bent Radii The customer may choose any required bending angle, since the conductor of the busbar is bent prior to being coated by the DURESCA® insulating material. Therefore, the DURESCA® busbar connection can be installed in any required horizontal or vertical position, enabling the user to choose the optimum layout of the busbar connections for the project in question. No Special Constructions on Site Necessary Because of its reduced space requirement the DURESCA® busbar connection may be installed in any existing building; no additional channels, troughs or ducts have to be provided, It is however essential to check and examine the possibilities for bringing the busbars into the building prior to deciding on the design and the constructional features. Because of their slim-line design the DURESCA® busbars do not the view conceal or shade any existing light sources, Assembly and Erection The DURESCA® busbar connection system is manufactured and supplied: ~ ready-to-be-mounted or — completely assembled and erected. Together with DURESCA® system, MGC will supply the entire fixing and grounding equipment, and will submit a detailed Instruction Manual including pertinent drawings. ‘As mounting is simple and mounting time is short, very little preparing and organizing on site is necessary. Recycling and Disposal DURESCA® busbars are made from environmentally safe materials allowing con- venient disposal or recycling. The organic epoxy resin impregnated paper insulation is non toxic and combustion will not produce toxic gases.
