Im Joey. Im a student and I live in a flat in
London with three friends. I travel to my
university every day on the underground. I have
lessons every morning, and in the afternoon I
usually study in the library. I work hard, but I
also have a lot of fun with my friends. We dont
have a lot of money, so we often listen to music
at home. We sometimes go to concerts too. My
best friend is in a band. He sings and plays the
electric guitar. The guys in the band dont play
pop music. They play really good rock music
and sound a bit like the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Examiner Good afternoon, sir. Can I help
you?
Student
Yes, please. Id like to book your
club for a twenty first birthday
party, on Saturday July the
eighth. Id like to invite 16 boys
and girls.
Examiner Fine. Would you like any
decorations?
Student
Id like some balloons and
flowers.
Examiner Im afraid that fresh flowers will
be rather expensive.
Student
Why? Its July and there are lots
of flowers. Ill bring some from
my garden.
Examiner Ok. Do you have any preferences
for the food?
Student
Yes. Some of the guests are
vegetarian so the menu should
include lots of salads and fruit.
And one hot dish, I think.
Examiner Ok and what about music?
Student
Id like a live band to play.
Examiner Sorry, but we can only have a DJ.
Student
Thats fine but before the party
Id like to talk to him about the
kind of music hes going to play.
Most of my friends are of rockand-roll fans.
Examiner Ill give you his phone number.
Student
That will be fantastic. Thank you.

So will you see all your family at

Sure. Thanksgiving is a family event
in the US. We always have a big
meal together and eat turkey and
pumpkin pie.
Hmm. I always find those family
parties a bit difficult. I usually argue
with my brother.
I dont have any problems like that

one day, anyway. After that, I go and
see my friends.
Do you think youll go back to the
US when you finish your course

Well, Id like to go travelling for a
bit. I havent seen enough of Europe,
but then Ill probably go home and
get a job. Actually, Im thinking of
getting a part-time job here. Id like
to work at weekends and maybe on

Well dont come and work at my

just too busy to do my college work.
What you need is a holiday! Why
dont you come to America with me
and meet my family?
Er ... No, I dont think so. Not this

I went skiing for the first time a few years ago with
some friends. I had a couple of lessons on a dry ski
slope before I went, but I wasnt that confident when
we booked our holiday. We went to a lovely ski
resort in France called Samoens. The resort had
difficult slopes for experienced skiers and a lower
area for beginners, so it was perfect for us. The
village was great. It had lovely historic buildings and
some interesting monuments, but there was all kinds
of entertainment too with shops, bars, restaurants, an
open air market, and even an outdoor ice rink. We
stayed in a comfortable chalet which had great views
of the mountains, and we ate in fantastic restaurants
every evening. Anyway, everything was going really
well until we decided to visit the ice rink. I
discovered that I wasnt quite as good at ice skating
as I was at skiing. I was skating onto the rink for the
first time when I fell awkwardly and twisted my
ankle. That was the end of my skiing on that holiday!

sport, but in this photo it doesnt look

I made my first skydiving jump last year and Ill
never forget it. Let me tell you what it was like. I was
always mad about sport at school and was in all the
school teams. Generally, I like to be fit and healthy,
but I became interested in extreme sports a few years
ago. Now, people ask me why I like doing dangerous
sport. For me, its the idea of doing something thats
new and difficult and really exciting.
Anyway, I tried white water rafting and rock
5

climbing. Then I decided to do something in the

sky. I thought about having flying lessons, but
then I found a website about skydiving. One of
my friends is an experienced skydiver so I asked
him what it was like. To be honest, Im a bit
scared of heights, but he said it was the best
thing in the world, so I decided to try it.
I found a good skydiving school and booked a
course. We had an early start on the first day.
Lessons began at eight oclock and we spent the
first six hours learning about skydiving
equipment and what to expect. Im not very
keen on studying and you might think it was
boring, but it wasnt at all, and all the time I was
thinking about doing my first jump at the end of
the day. I was really looking forward to it.
Then came the exciting part. We put on our sky
diving clothes our overalls, our helmets, our
gloves and our goggles, and then we got on the
plane. When it was time for me to jump, the
instructor told me to walk towards the exit door.
I wasnt frightened at all, but my equipment and
my clothes weighed so much I had to walk very
slowly. I felt the cold air through the exit door
and then ... I jumped.
I fell faster and faster and the wind roared in my
ears. Then, I opened the parachute and could see
the world far, far below me as I floated slowly
down to earth. Those were the most fantastic
moments of my life and of the jump. My
landing wasnt the most comfortable landing in
the world, but I picked up my parachute and
walked towards the skydiving building. It was a
sunny day and I was smiling.

I think we should choose photo number one. These
terraced houses are not very modern, but they look
comfortable. They are in the suburbs so its easy to
get to the city centre. And I think its important to
have neighbours.
I wouldnt choose photo number two because it
probably isnt very close to other people. Theres a
lot of space here and its quite modern, but not very
attractive. It looks more like a school than a home so
I wouldnt say its an ideal place to live.
Photo number three is not a good idea because its
too small. The garden is beautiful, but I dont think it
looks very comfortable and its probably very cold in
winter. It would be OK for holidays but not as a

Have you ever thought about living on a barge? Marc
Sharp does just that. He bought his barge about three
years ago when he retired from his job. The boat was
in a terrible condition when he bought it, but some
friends helped him to rebuild it and now he lives
there with his dog, Benny, for company. He has a
very small living area on his barge, but theres a bed,
a table, an armchair and a plasma TV screen, and
thats all, Marc says, he needs. The best thing for
Marc about the barge is that he is able to visit places
whenever he wants. And the worst thing? Well, it has
to be the weather because he still gets seasick when
its very stormy.

Have you ever thought about living on a
houseboat? The fact is, more and more people
are taking this decision. In Britain alone, its
thought that there are around 15,000 people
living on boats. So why are people taking this
decision? One reason is that its cheaper.
Buying a houseboat is a lot cheaper than buying
an ordinary house. Another reason is that people
want to get away from busy, modern life to find
a more relaxing lifestyle. But is it a comfortable
way to live? I visited Ben, 24, a computer
analyst, and Lizzie, 23, a newly qualified
teacher, on their houseboat in Essex in the south
of England to find out what life is like on board.
When I first got on Ben and Lizzies houseboat,
it felt quite small to me, but as I wandered
around, it didnt seem much smaller than my
own one-bedroom flat. Theres a living room, a
bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom. I also came
across a small storage room and plenty of
cupboards. The couple also have electricity,
running water, a phone and broadband internet,
so working from home and keeping in contact
with people isnt a problem.
So what are the best things about living on a
houseboat? Ben and Lizzie told me that they
loved most things about their unusual lifestyle,
but that they particularly like the people. They
say they get on with everybody in the
community and that theres always a party or a
barbecue happening on one of the boats.
But are there any problems? DIY, the couple
told me. You cant get away with not doing
repairs to your home. The problem is, when
youre living on water, your house is constantly
moving around so things are always cracking
and breaking which means there are always
repairs that need to be done. The wind and rain
doesnt help this, either. However, its still
cheaper than looking after an ordinary home,
and dont forget its more environmentally
friendly, too!
I finally got off Ben and Lizzies houseboat and
wandered back through the marina. The sun was
shining, people were friendly and there was a
really nice atmosphere. I felt quite envious of
their unusual lifestyle.

It seems to me that the photo with products on
ice is a better choice. In this photo we can see
some luxurious ingredients like olives and
shrimp, and I believe that meals for special
occasions should be made from something
unusual. Its also important that all these
products are kept on ice so I know that they are
very fresh, which in my opinion is extremely
important. The other stand offers only ordinary
vegetables like onions or greens so it would be
difficult to make a whole meal out of them. I
imagine my mum would prefer something
fancier than cooked tomatoes.

Have you wondered how the Hollywood stars live?
Have you ever wondered where they shop? I took a
trip to Beverley Hills to find out.
Beverly Hills is a small town for the very rich. Its
streets are full of multi-million dollar mansions with
expensive cars like limousines and Mercedes parked
outside. There are shops and boutiques, top class
restaurants and hotels, parks and churches, but there
arent any hospitals, and there are certainly no
cemeteries. This is a place for the rich to live in
comfort, to shop and eat and to forget about the real
world.
When I arrived in Beverley Hills, the first thing I
wanted to see was the shops! So, whats the best
Nowa matura ustna Oxford Repetytorium Matura Podstawowa

14

place to go shopping? There is a place called

The Golden Triangle in Beverley Hills, which is
a network of streets filled with shops and
restaurants. The most famous of these streets is
probably Rodeo Drive.
The stretch of shops and boutiques on Rodeo
Drive is only three blocks long but its probably
the most expensive three blocks of shops in the
world. Here, the most famous clothing designers
in the world have boutiques including Armani,
Gucci and Coco Chanel. Here you can shop in
jewellery stores with names like Cartier and
Tiffany. In fact, Rodeo Drive is home to the
single most expensive store in the world: Bijan.
This place is so exclusive you have to make an
appointment in advance just to go inside. On a
typical visit, Bijans average customer spends
around $100,000.
The tourists flock to this part of Beverley Hills
to go window-shopping and to try to see stars
like Britney Spears and Christiano Ronaldo. I
spent the day doing what the tourists do, but it
was the evening that I enjoyed most. During the
day the place can look at bit ordinary, but at
night, its lit up with sparkling lights the shop
windows look fantastic. If you are planning a
trip to Beverley Hills, a word of advice avoid
arriving on a Sunday. Most of the shops on
Rodeo Drive are closed then, and the usual
crowd of shoppers is replaced by too many
tourists with nothing to look at!

The picture shows a lot of people looking at
something. They are probably at the cinema because
they are sitting on seats which are typical in a cinema.
They also have drinks and popcorn, which are things
people often buy when they go to the cinema. They
all look at bit nervous and scared so I imagine they
are watching a horror film. The girl on the right is
covering her face. She seems really upset, and the girl
sitting next to her looks like she doesnt want to

I think I would choose the big grey one. It looks
interesting because you can imagine that there are a
lot of places to see inside such a huge castle. I think
its medieval and thats my favourite period. Also,
since its in a great condition, I would hope that there
are a lot of exhibits to see inside the rooms, so that
you can imagine how these people lived. On the
other hand, as the ruins in photo one do not have a
roof, I think there will only be walls with grass inside
the castle, so it will be like many other ruins that you
can find. The last one looks great, but it looks like a

places all over the country. For most of the holiday,

nothing really bad happened. We didnt lose our
passports; we didnt miss our trains or buses; we
didnt stay in any horrible places and the weather was
absolutely fantastic, too.
Then we arrived in Sydney and went to Bondi beach.
It was our last stop before going home. We were
staying in a youth hostel there and decided not to
leave anything in the hostel just in case there were
any thieves around. We were going home in two
days time and didnt want anything to go wrong. So,
I put everything into a small black rucksack and took
it down with me to the beach.
We lay on the beach all day and swam in the sea. One
of us always stayed with our things to look after
them. So ... in the afternoon when I opened my bag to
get my book out, I couldnt believe it. The bag was
empty. Everything was gone: my tickets, my
passport, my money, my digital camera. Everything!
I couldnt understand when somebody had done this
because we were always watching our bags.
Then one of my friends, Joe, admitted that he had
fallen asleep when he was on his own with the bags.
Luckily, the police were really good, they helped us
sort things out and we got home.

It was a couple of years ago and it was December
24th. I was at the train station in Chicago. Id been
away for six months because I was travelling around
Canada and the US by train and by bus, and now I
was trying to get home to be with my family in New
York. I wanted to be at home on Christmas day.
My train was supposed to leave at two p.m. The
trouble was, the weather was absolutely terrible.
There was a snowstorm and all the trains were
running late. Of course, the twenty fourth is the
busiest travel time of the year in the US so there were
hundreds of people at the station and they were all in
the waiting rooms trying to keep warm. At five p.m,
we heard an announcement that all the trains leaving
the station that day were cancelled.
It was freezing at the station, but I didnt see any
point in leaving. I wouldnt be able to get on a bus or
even in a taxi, and I wasnt keen on going anywhere
on foot in that bad weather. I decided that I could
afford to stay at a hotel, but I thought they would be
full, so I didnt bother phoning any of them.
In the end, I spent a sleepless night in the waiting

them were angry, but I didnt feel like that.
Nothing could change the situation. I phoned
my family and told them not to worry. Then I
spent the night chatting to some other young
people. It was quite good fun, really.
The next day, the weather was better, so slowly
some men cleared the snow from the tracks. At
last, the trains started running and I was able to
get my train to New York. I finally arrived
home late on Christmas night. It was lovely to
see my family, and at least they had saved me
some turkey.

Everybody gets worried about studying for
exams but there are some things you can do to
make things easier.
Its important to remember thats its difficult to
concentrate for long periods of time. If you
study for too long, youll feel tired, stressed and
distracted. So, stop every forty-five minutes or
so and do something else for fifteen minutes.
You will feel much better when you go back to
your studying.
Dont feel that you have to study every day. On
the days when you dont study, do something
completely different perhaps a sport so that
you forget all about your work.
When taking notes or highlighting, only write
down or underline the most important sentence
in each paragraph. Dont spend time copying
everything out.

1.45 Zapis nagrania

Not many people look forward to exams, but that
doesnt mean you have to panic about them. Here are
some ideas to help you get through. Firstly, before
you go into the exam, make sure you are feeling
calm. If youre nervous, try running round the block
for ten minutes. The exercise will help you relax. It
will also get your brain working. Just make sure
youre not then late for your exam.
Have you ever run out of time in an exam or finished
well before the end? Its important to get things right
in an exam, so that you do your very best in each
question. Firstly, make sure you know exactly how
long the exam lasts, how many questions there will
be and what kind of questions they are. That way you
can plan to spend a good amount of time on each one.
Remember that some questions are more difficult or
are worth more marks than others, so dont divide
your time equally between all the questions.
Certainly, dont spend all your time on questions you
know the answer to. Answering one or two questions
extremely well and all the rest badly wont get you a
good mark!
What you write is very important, but how you write
is important too. Make sure youre writing is neat. It
doesnt matter how great your work is if the examiner
cant read it. Try to avoid spelling mistakes too!
These kinds of errors make the examiners life
harder, too.
It sounds obvious, but always read through your work
at the end. Make sure you have ten minutes or so left
at the end when you can read over everything. You
may want to add things at this point, so make sure
youve left room for new ideas.
Dont spend ages discussing the exam when youve
finished it. Theres no point going through it with
your friends. Stop worrying about it and move on to
the next exam. Finally, when youve finished all your
exams dont forget to celebrate!

I think the flier with two sad dogs is better. First of
all, it says take me home, so its like these dogs
are asking you personally. Also, because these dogs
look very sad, you feel like you should help them
somehow. So I think this flier would make a lot of
people feel sorry for these animals and they would
really think about taking one home. The other flier
shows a happy girl with a cat that looks happy too,
so everything appears OK, and you dont feel like
you need to do anything. Its true that everyone
needs a friend, but that just means that I should get
a pet. It doesnt mean I need to look for it in an

Usually people are given good warning before a
hurricane arrives, and if its a really bad one, people
are told to leave the area. If you are in your home,
however, the best thing to do is to go to the centre of
your house, away from windows as they may smash
and the glass may injure you, and hide under
something very solid like a table.

Yellowstone Park is home to the largest super
volcano in the world. First, let me tell you a little bit
about super volcanoes. For those of you that dont
know, super volcanoes lie under the ground covering
enormous areas of land. Later on, youll see
thousands of springs and holes with hot water and
steam boiling out of them. Did you know that if this
volcano erupted people would hear it all around the
world. But dont worry! This volcano hasnt erupted
for 640,000 years and scientists dont think its likely
to erupt again soon.

Did you hear about the earthquake in

Interviewer Hello and welcome to the Good
Health programme. Today Im
talking to John Smith who is an
expert in teenage health. Hes
written several books and
numerous magazine articles.
John, its good to have you here.
John
Thank you.
Interviewer First John, tell me, when did you
decide to be a writer?
John
Well, I used to be a pretty good
footballer, but then I had an
injury and my career ended. I
spent a lot of time feeling sorry
for myself and sitting around
watching TV and reading
magazines. I read a lot of articles
about teenage obesity and things
like that and I decided I wanted
to try to help teenagers myself,
so I did a course in journalism
Oxford University Press 2011

John

and became a writer.

So what are your main concerns about
health and young people today?
Well, obesity is the main problem and
its getting more and more common in
teenagers. A recent survey showed
that 16.6% of boys and 16.7% of girls
under ten years old are obese in
Britain. Thats a really serious issue, I
think.
Why do you think this is happening?
Is it because there isnt enough sport
in schools?
Thats part of the problem but I
think whats more important is that
fewer young people are interested in
playing sport or getting involved in
other physical activities. Its not
thought to be so cool any more. Its
OK to watch people play sport on TV
and to read about the lives of famous
sports people, but its different
actually doing it yourself.

Interviewer So, first of all, what exactly do you
do?
Joanna
Well, I do a lot of things, actually. I
write articles for magazines. Im also
something of a health coach. I
basically go to peoples houses and
give them advice on what they can do
to improve their health. And before

feel qualified to do that, most of

my clients are just like you and
me.
And why did you decide to
follow a career in health? Were
you always interested in fitness?
Not at all, in fact, I used to be
quite overweight myself. I had
an office job and hardly did any
exercise and never ate the right
things. I joined various
slimming clubs but they just
told me to eat less and that
didnt work for me. Then, I read
an article in a health magazine
about finding time to exercise
and that was great for me. I
started losing weight almost
immediately. After that, I left
my job, did a course in fitness
and training, and also in food
and nutrition, and here I am.
So what advice would you give
to people who say they dont
have time to exercise because
their lives are so busy?
Well, it is difficult. These days,
everybody knows that they
should exercise, there are so
many programmes on TV about
it, and there are so many
different ways you can exercise:
join a club or a gym, play a
sport, get an exercise video.
Exercise isnt boring anymore.
The problem is, home and
family life, and work as well,
can really leave very little time
for anything, so this is why
people put exercise last.
So, what can people do?
The important thing to
remember is that exercise
doesnt have to take very long
just half an hour a day in ten
minute bursts if necessary.
Also, it can be built into your
day. For example, get up earlier
than usual and go jogging, or go
for walks at lunchtime, or buy

youre watching your favourite TV

How well do postcards and souvenirs

Postcards are good because they

If I wanted to buy souvenirs from London, Id
go to a gift shop like the one in the middle
photo. There are many places like this in
London and its easy to find them. They are
small, but they have a lot of things that would
make good gifts, like postcards, T-shirts or
fridge magnets with the British flag on them. I
could buy something different for everybody
and these souvenirs are not very expensive.
I would like to visit an antiques shop because
they always sell a lot of beautiful things. But
these objects are always very expensive, so I
wouldnt have enough money to buy any gifts
there. Also I know that its often illegal to take
antiques abroad.

Well, partly I suppose I grew up,
but also, we had a new art
teacher at school and she really
helped me.
She recognised your talent?
Yeah, I guess so. Anyway, she
entered me for competitions and
I won a few, and then she got me
doing legal graffiti.
What do you mean?
Well, sometimes people want
artists to do murals in public
places or to paints vehicles such
as buses or taxis. Also, a lot of
advertising companies use
graffiti artists.

older I started to enter

too, and I even went to art

ordinary people.
Is it legal?
Yes, it is, if you get permission.
Thats very important. Of course,
there are some people who think that
it is just a form of graffiti and
shouldnt be allowed, but most
people who see my work say its
very beautiful.
You do a lot of copies of classical
works, dont you?
Yes, I do. In fact, the very first piece
of pavement art I did was of the
Mona Lisa. I did that in Paris. I still
do a lot of copies of well-known
portraits, and landscapes, too. But I
also do a lot of modern works not
only copies, but my own original
work, too.
How do you feel about the fact that
they dont last forever?
Thats a very good question. At first,
I felt pretty upset when it was lost
either through bad weather or
because it was time to be cleaned off,
but now Im used to the idea and so
long as I take a photo, its OK. I just
move on to the next picture.
So what are your plans for the
future? Will you continue being a
pavement artist, or will you think
about painting on canvas?
Well, I shall keep on doing what I
love best, that is painting outside for
the general public, but Im also
thinking of doing an exhibition. As I
said I take a photo of every piece of
work I do, so Im thinking about
exhibiting these. Im negotiating with
a gallery in London, actually.

Hello and welcome to Living Today. This week, our

The John F. Kennedy Space Centre in Florida is the
NASA space centre where rockets are launched into
space. It is a huge site being fifty-five kilometres long
and around ten kilometres wide. It covers around five
hundred and sixty-seven square kilometres and more
than thirteen thousand people work there. Of course,
not all of it is open to the public, but there is a visitors
centre and there are bus tours you can go on. The
Visitor Complex is open every day of the year except
December 25th and on certain launch days and is
open from nine till five thirty although the Astronaut
Hall of Fame is open until six thirty.
The Visitor Centre is a fantastic place to visit because
there is so much to see and do. It has a number of
museums and also two IMAX theatres. The Astronaut
Hall of Fame is a must. It has spacecraft exhibits and
all kinds of space memorabilia through the ages. You
can go on an astronaut simulator and feel what its
like to walk on the moon. You can also go to the

I would choose photo number
three. I think its the best one to
advertise the science fair because it
shows students doing an
experiment in a lab. We want our
students to come to the fair and the
photo shows they will have a

and to learn something new in an
interesting way. I like photo
number one, because Im

I dont think we will have a

People learn about the most
important discoveries at school.
There are also books and television
programmes about discoveries.
But the best way, I think, is when
people can do something practical,
like in this photo. Interactive
museums are excellent because
people can touch and try
everything. Using this method they
learn difficult things in an easy
way.
Examiner What might be the advantages and
disadvantages of being a scientist?
Student
Well, a scientist has probably more
freedom than a car mechanic or a
teacher. If you are good at it, you
can become famous and win a
Nobel Prize, and earn a lot of
money. But if you want to be
good, you have to work hard and
spend long hours in a lab. Whats
more, you have to study all your
life and some experiments can be
dangerous.

Interviewer Hello and welcome to Science Today
the programme that looks at all topics

Eleanor, welcome to the programme.

Thank you.

Well, I went to an independent girls

didnt enjoy it that much at school. I

But you decided to do science at
university anyway?
Yes, because I knew that I
wanted to work as a scientist in
the future and I knew that it
would be better at university, so I
chose to do a physics degree at
Birmingham university.
So tell me about your time at
university.
Well, to be honest, it made a nice
change to be away from home I
worked hard, but I also joined
the choir and the orchestra and
had a good social life too. I also
started writing while I was there
and wrote articles for the physics
department newspaper.
That sounds interesting.
Yes, it was and it made me
realize that it was something I
wanted to do more of. So, after
my degree, I did another degree
straight away in science
communication which is
basically science journalism.
What was it like?
Great fun! We had our own radio
show on the college radio. We
had music, interviews and a few
light-hearted science discussions,
but it was all aimed at young
people. There was nothing too
difficult to understand!
And now you work at the science
museum, dont you?
Yes, I write information for
exhibitions and things like that. It
involves quite a lot of research
its hard work but its interesting.
And what would you like to do
next? Have you ever thought
about teaching?
Hmm, yes, I have, and perhaps
thats a possibility for the future.
I would also like to work on a
science magazine full time at
some point, but right now Im
really enjoying my work at the

didnt have any office experience. Anyway, I saw an
advert for a vacancy for a trainee legal secretary in a

filled it in and sent it back with a covering letter and
my CV. A few days later, they asked me to come for
an interview. I was really nervous, but it went very
well. The next day, they offered me the job.
I was so excited. I wrote back straight away and
accepted it. They asked for references from my

I think theyre going to have a

special meal. Maybe its one of
the childrens birthdays, or
perhaps its the parents wedding

And is it important for a family
to have meals together?
Yes, I think it is. First of all, if
you eat together you spend time
together. It is very important for
the family to have time to talk
about what goes on every day.
Also, if you have meals together
you have to be at home for them.
This means your parents cant
work until midnight and neither
can you, plus everyone can relax.
Ok, please describe a meal that
you had at a restaurant.
It was last month. My cousin was
getting married and we were all
invited to a restaurant for dinner.
It was really great the
restaurant was decorated and the
food was very tasty. There were
some salads for starters, then we
had soup but I didnt eat it
because I dont like tomato soup.
After that there were two main
courses. You could choose
between a vegetarian lasagne or
roast beef. And finally there was
chocolate cake and tea and
coffee. It was really great.

Thank you. Now Ill ask you two

eat or eating at home?
I prefer going out. First of all, it means
you can always go to a different place
and eat something different every day.
Secondly, you dont have to cook or
clean so you save a lot of time. I dont
know how to cook so my food isnt
very good the food at a restaurant is
always much better.
In your opinion, why are TV cooking
shows so popular?
I believe there are a couple of reasons.
One is that a lot of people dont know
how to cook and you can learn from
these shows. Even if you are really
bad at cooking, the cooks on these
programmes show you how to do it
step by step and they make it look
easy. Also, its much easier to learn
how to cook when you are watching
someone whos doing it. Reading a
book is not enough because the book
doesnt explain everything.

Hello and welcome to Whats On the show
that gives you all the latest news on the best
places to go and the best things to do in London.
Lets start off with food. If you like gourmet
food from around the world, then you should
definitely visit the Taste of London. This is a
food and drink festival which takes place in
June and which brings together various world
famous London restaurants.
The event is extremely well organised and is
held outdoors in Regents Park although most
of it takes places inside tents, so dont worry if
the weather isnt fine. During this time, visitors
have the chance to try gourmet cooking
prepared by some of the worlds best chefs. A
number of well-known celebrity chefs will also
be there to demonstrate their skills and the
dishes theyre most famous for. There will be
mini kitchens on the site for this purpose and
you can try these at pretty low prices certainly
much less than youd pay for the full-sized dish
at the restaurants.
Although this is a London event, cooking from
across the world will feature at the festival and
this year, there will be a special focus on
Thailand. If you fancy trying some international
cooking yourself at home, there will also be a
range of speciality foods on sale at the festival
including spices and bottled sauces from all
over the globe. As well as this, there are
workshops and interactive demonstrations daily.

Dad really likes Mexican food,

maybe we can find a good
Mexican restaurant?
But I dont like Mexican and
neither does mum.
Then maybe something Italian?
Dad likes Italian and so does
everyone else. That way
everyone will find something
they like.
Sounds great. What do you
think hed like to eat?
He loves lasagne but he also
likes all kinds of spaghetti.
What kind of restaurant do we
want to go to? Somewhere big
and expensive?
No, I think the best place would
be Villa Italia. Its small but
cozy, like a country house, so it
will be nice and quiet.
Isnt that a bit too simple? Do
you know anything else about
it? Has anyone you know ever
been there?
My friend went last week. She
says that the owner is Italian so
he really knows how to cook
these dishes. They also played
Italian music and all of the food
was delicious. Plus, they have
the best tiramisu in town you
know how much dad likes
tiramisu. So, can you book us a
table for 6pm? Youre much
better at arranging things than
me. Ill give you the number.
Sure, Ill do it today.

is cutting some ham or something like

that. I think shes probably making
something to eat for herself and maybe
someone else because there is quite a
lot of it. Shes reading the cookbook so
maybe shes doing something difficult
or perhaps shes learning how to cook.
What meal do you think this person is
making?
I think its probably lunch because she
has salad and some ham. People dont
eat salad for breakfast and I dont see
anything cooking so I dont think its
dinner.
What is your favorite dish and how do
you make it?
My favorite dish is spaghetti. Its very
simple. In one pot you have to cook
noodles usually for about 10
minutes. Then in another pot you cook
some tomato sauce with herbs. You
add the sauce to the spaghetti and
thats it. If you like meat you can also
add some meat to your sauce.
Describe a situation when you cooked
a meal for someone.
My sister and I did last year for
Mothers Day. We found recipes on
the internet and cooked the whole
dinner. Of course, first we had to go
shopping. We bought everything and
then we cooked onion soup and the
main course. For the main course we
had French fries and hamburgers but
they were homemade. And for dessert
we baked an apple pie with vanilla icecream. My mum was very happy.

this book are tasty and hell show

you how to make them. On the other
hand, the second photo looks scary.
There are lots of ingredients for
someone who doesnt know how to
cook there are too many. Youd be
thinking Ill make a mess if I have
to use all this. Also, it doesnt look
as tasty as the first photo.
Examiner Ok, thank you. Now let me ask you
some questions. Is it important to
know how to cook?
Student Many people say it isnt because
there are so many restaurants and
fast food places nowadays. But I
think its very important. One
reason is that cooking is cheaper
than going to a restaurant or even a
fast food place. Also, if you cook
yourself then you know whats in
your food. You can use only fresh
and healthy ingredients and you
dont have to worry about being
unhealthy. Finally, fast food is very
unhealthy so you shouldnt eat it all
the time.
Examiner And would you describe your eating
habits as healthy?
Student Unfortunately no. I dont know
how to cook yet and I dont have a
lot of time for it, because I have to
study. So I often eat pizza and
hamburgers. I also eat a lot of chips
and sweets when Im studying and
I know thats bad, too. I do try to eat
a lot of fruit and vegetables, though,
and drink a lot of water. Plus, I
always have a big breakfast before I
go to school so thats good.
