Computers

When people were tired of hand writing, they needed something

to facilitate work

Charles Babbage, considered as the father of computing

Then ENIAC came, a very big computer that needed rooms to fit
in

Then they started to develop and more companies started to

manufacture computers; IBM and apple are examples of this.

Pre-Computer Age

Charles Babbage, father of computing

He invented the first computer

Before this inventions, we had the abacus and the calculation

devices.

First Generation of Computers

1940-1956

We had the inventions of Vacuum tubes that were used for

circuitry and magnetic drums for memory, and were often
enormous, taking up entire rooms

They used machine language, the lowest programming language.

2nd Generation of Computers

In this generation transistors replaced vacuum tubes

The transistor was invented in 1947 but did not see widespread
use in computers until the late 1950s.

This generation is dated from 1956 to1963

Also they moved to cryptic binary a higher level of programming

language

The first computers of this generation were developed for the

atomic energy industry.

3rd Generation of Computers

The development of the integrated circuit was the hallmark of

the third generation of computers.

Transistor were placed on silicon chips, they called them

semiconductors

Introduction to keyboards and interfaces and software, etc.

Computers for the first time became accessible to a mass

audience because they were smaller and cheaper than their
predecessors.

This period of time was 1964-1971.

4th Generation Computers

The microprocessor brought the fourth generation of computers,

as thousands of integrated circuits were built onto a single silicon
chip.

The intel 4004 chip was developed

During this time IBM and Apple introduced their computers with
microprocessors.

Fourth generation computers also saw the development of GUIs,

the mouse and handheld devices.

1971-Present

5th Generation of Computers

Present and Beyond

This is based on artificial intelligence, they want to copy the

human mind

The use of parallel processing and superconductors is helping to

make artificial intelligence a reality

Quantum computation and molecular and nanotechnology will

radically change the face of computers in years to come.

The goal of fifth-generation computing is to develop devices that

respond to natural language input and are capable of learning
and self-organization.

Closing

Great advancements happened since the first generation of

computers

Work is done easily with the computers and new technology

Sometimes we ask the question what will be the technology in

20-30 years more?

Also what will it be if computers never existed?
