SETTING THE Lo PAN ‘The Lo Pan is designed in such a way that the assignment of colours gives important information at first glance. Colours corresponding to the 5 elements (agents): Ring 2,6,7,10,11,13-16,17,19,24,26 Colour of writing or sector green red yellow white blue Colour of polarity (Yin or Yang) Ring 1,6,7,10,13-16,18,24 Colour of sector orange light yellow Colours attributed to qualities of direction Ring 12, 13-16, 24 Colour of writing red black blue wood fire earth metal water yang yin favourable unfavourable neutral SETTING THE Lo PAN SETTING THE Lo PAN 5. Align the Lo Pan to the dwelling: Bring the square casing of the Lo Pan into an exact parallel line with the front of the dwelling ( this is not necessary when measuring a plot of land). Determine Magnetic North: Bring the direction finding line (innermost disc from above) in an exact line with the compass needle. Carry out control measurements: To avoid mistakes due to local disturbances of the earth,s magnetic field , you should carry out control measurements in different places ( inside or nearby a dwelling the magnetic field lines are almost invariably disturbed!). For exact ‘measurements, it is advisable to make additional use of a directional compass. Align the main disc of the Lo Pan: ‘Turn the outer disc from undemeath until the marking line of the North exactly coincides with the direction finding line. The marking line of the North is located at 360 ° on the outside of the main disc. The red half of the needle at the center of the Lo Pan points to the North. Setting the Lo Shu omen of the dwelling: ‘Turn the middle disc from underneath until the orientation window is pointed in a particular direction .This sector mustn,t necessarily appear at the front door, but can be located in any direction. Whats important Is where the maximum Qi converges or which school is followed. Adjust Ming Kwa: (Personally favourable directions) ‘Tum the innermost disc from undemeath until the window of the ring 2 which contains the personal Ming Kwa numeral, turns red. Thereafter, the qualities of the various directions appear in the windows of ring 12. Ring 1 THE 8 TRIGRAMS OF EARLY HEAVEN, THE 8 TRIGRAMS OF EARLY HEAVEN Early Heaven (Ho To) equals existance prior to the first intake of breath and reflects the perfect, order, where the interaction of forces is balanced. The polarity of Yin and Yang is harmonious and without dynamic. Trigram Earth is located in the North and represents the energy of Yin. ‘Trigram Heaven appears opposite from Earth and constitutes Yang. In addition, the relative family member are opposite each other. ‘The HoTo combinations in the 4 cardinal compass directions Yang starts in NW and each generate an element. continously increases until North 146 = water itreaches SW; crossing the ‘centre, it then moves on to NE, and further expands Until it culminates in the South. West East 4+9 = metal ‘South 8 ‘TRiGRAMS OF LATER HEAVEN Rine 2 TRIGRAMS OF LATER HEAVEN Later Heaven (Lo Shu) represents existence after the first intake of breath, and mirrors an ‘order, which is off balance. The polarity of Yin and Yang is no longer in harmony, but full of dynamic. The familly members are no longer opposite each other , likewise, the trigrams do not fit together any longer. Henceforth, it can be concluded, that the way back to our origins requires a balancing of the polarity. Ring 17 corresponds to ring 2, and clearly indicates the subdivision of the various 8 directions ‘The numerals of the Lo Shu square, combined with the various compass directions. RING 1 AND 2 Ho To AND Lo SHU Comainarion: 9 Ho To AND Lo SHU COMBINATIONS With the help of Early and Later Heaven, the flow of energy of waterways, roads and tracks can be evaluated. Two different analyses exist: 1. If waterway enters a plot of land originating from a trigram of Later Heaven and, then, exits through the same trigram, however now pertaining to Early Heaven, we talk of ‘water that disappears’. 2. Ifthe course of a river enters a plot of land, originating from a trigram of Early Heaven and ,then, exits by the same trigram which, however, now belongs to Later Heaven, we talk of ‘dead water’. .. Inflow of Qt Water-Qi can also flow on an angle to the directions of the compass. These 2 directions do not necessarily have to be linked with each other. What is important is in which direction the greatest influence of Qi, either inflowing or outfiowing, emerges. : Outflow of Qi wo ‘Te EiGHT WATER GATES OF THE DRAGON RING AND 2 THE EIGHT WATER GATES OF THE DRAGON To determine energy lines, waterways, roads, and tracks, which have a strenghtening effect on a dwelling, a method ca be used which is similar to the one discussed on p.9. In this analysis, the trigrams of Early and Later Heaven are compared with each other. Having done so, the trigram most suitable for the inflow of Qi, which is that which most strenghtens the sitting of a dwelling, is chosen. Likewise, for the outflow of Qi,a trigram which least weakens the sitting is taken. In pos. 1 and 2 below, the analysis is strictly based on the trigrams. With the Terrestrial and the Heavenly Gate, however, it is important that both, inflow and outtiow of Qi, are directed towards the front of the dwelling. In that way, some directions appear twice. pos.1 | pos.2 | terrestrial | heavenly gate gate Sitting of dwelling Qi inflow | Giinflow | Ql inflow | Qi outfiow SS | teaven| nw] ss NE s E = water | N w sw sw SE mountain) NE | NW e w s = thunder | NE s sw NW = | wins | se | sw w w N S= | tire s E NW nw NE earth | sw | oN SE N E lake I wi} se N SE NE RING 2/3 AND 4 THE Lo SHu Macic Square " THE Lo SHU MaGic SQUARE lin ring 2, the Lo Shu numerals appear according to the magic square: whichever way these numerals are added up, they invariably make up a total of 15 with the number 5 placed in the centre. if you want to devise a new square by placing one of the other 8 numbers in the centre, then place this number in ring 2 in the red field (by turing the innermost disc). Automatically, the new positions of the other numbers appear in ring 3. However, the new square does not correspond any longer to the magic square, which always results in the same sum. If you want to determine the backwards movement of the numerals, they appear in ring 4.(please note: South is at the top). io let 81 1)3 2 3 4)/6]2 4 6 2 THE NINE STAR KI RING 2/3 AND 4 THE NINE STAR KI Time changes in cycles, composed of various periods. Each period undergoes 9 different qualities. The various cycles put together, the momentary, distinctive quality of time is generated. Additional and more refined information is obtained in a second step in connection with the monthly number. Example: born on march 24th, 1962 results in yearly number results in monthly number = ‘The current year is 2003 results in yearly number = 6 ‘The computation of the basic chart is based on the current yearly number. The other numbers are then included in this chart. Number 5 plays a decisive role, as welll as the personal yearly number. -Itis not advisable to travel in the direction of number 5 or away from it. -Itis not advisable to travel in the direction of one,s personal yearly number or away from it. -It is not beneficial to open a branch or a subsidiary which is situated in the direction of number 5. In addition, it is recommended to locate number 5 which corresponds to the dragon, inside the house, to abstain from structural changes in this area in the respective year. Traditionally, the dragon is neutralized by virtue of a metal wind chime with 6 tubes. This is placed In the respective area of the house every year. “ TRIPLE COMBINATIONS OF TERRESTRIAL BRANCHES Rina 5 ‘TRIPLE COMBINATIONS OF TERRESTRIAL BRANCHES Three Terrestrial Branches always together form one element (agent), which is represented by the cardinal animal. The 12 Terrestrial Branches are subdivided into the 4 seasons, each comprising 3 Terrestrial Branches. The animal in the middle of each season is said to be the cardinal animal. If the 5th ring is turned so that the 3 blue windows of ring § coincide with the animals, it becomes clear which pairs of threes belong together. fall the colour of writing indicates the seasonal element summer The four triples of Terrestrial Branches rat-dragon-monkey = water ‘the cardinal animal being rat ox-snake-cock = metal the cardinal animal being cock tiger-horse-dog = fire the cardinal animal being horse hare-goat-pig = wood the cardinal animal being hare RING 6 ‘THE TERRESTRIAL BRANCHES OR ANIMALS THE TERRESTRIAL BRANCHES OR TWELVE SIGNS OF THE ZODIAC ‘The 360 degrees are subdivided into 12 segments of identical size and represent the Terrestrial Branches or 42 signs of the zodiac. Each animal is linked to an element ,and to Yin or Yang and has its firm place according to the directions of the compass. The animals, correspondence to Yin or ‘Yang does not reflect the astrological point of view, but rather the character of the animal. The colour of writing signifies the animals element. What we define as auspicious reflects only one quality of the person. The so-called inauspicious constellation shows, where the person needs to undergo a leaming process or has got an unexpressed potential, In this example, the door is located in the sector occupied by horse. According to Traditional Chinese Astrology, to each individual can be attributed 4 animals, which reflect the year, the month, the day, and the hour of birth. Among the animals exist many different Interactions, which cause various dynamics. In that way, the animal at the entrance of the dwelling can be compared to the horoscope of the residents, thus revealing its particular effect on each one. Consequently, the house receives a personal note, which is variable. RING 5 AND 6 COMPUTATION OF THREE KILUNGS ” THE THREE KILLINGS (SHA) AND ,, THE DUKE“ The so-called Three Killings (Sha) represent an inauspicious form of energy which, depending on the respective yearly animal, is also called the Duke. Each year, the Duke forms one of the 4 triple constellations, depending on where itis positioned .In this way, the energy is concentrated in the cardinal animal of the triple-combination (rat, hare, horse or cock). This, in tum, depletes the animal positioned opposite of energy, whereby it becomes ShalKiling (grey dot). Three Killings (Sha) are mentioned, because not only the aforementioned animal is affected, but also the animal to the left and to the right, since all three belong to the same season. Yearly animal: Yearly animal: pig, hare, or goat = cock tiger, horse, or dog = rat Yearly animal: Yearly animal: snake, cock, or ox = hare monkey, rat or dragon = horse The sha animal in the middle is affected most. That animal should not be behind one,s back, and, when lying down, the i Itis not advisable to undertake renovation work or dig up earth in this direction. While at work, itis important not to look in the direction of the Duke (yearly animal) and to abstain from undertaking construction work on the axes of the Duke. m7 THE CeLestiat STEMS Ring 7 THE CELESTIAL STEMS: The 10 Celestial Stems represent a refined form of the process as portrayed by the 5 elements(agents), and correspond to the 4 seasons. They give insight into the aspects of time Pertaining to the 5 elements. Since all 5 elements are subdivided into Yin and Yang, there are 10 Celestial Stems in total. In the Lo Pan version of 1996, the Celestial Stems are written with arabic numbers; in the present version of 2003 they are written with the letters of the respective element, and are accompanied by + or - according to Yin and Yang. Of the 10 stems only 8 are distributed over the 360 degrees of the compass, since 2 of them are attributed to the center. The remaining 8 have a firm place with regard to the direction of the compass. The over-all placement of all components remains, only the places get smaller, so that all 24 qualities can be integrated. The 4 trigrams constitute the 4 basic cornerstones of our experience: the polarity between father - NW -and mother -SW -; wind -SE- which represents our breath, and mountain -NE,-which symbolizes the body. This ring is included in all Lo Pans and is thought to be one of the most important. The Celestial Stems create our spiritual, mental and emotional qualities. The Terrestrial Branches are at the basis of our body, our material and social life. The secondary directions of the compass reflect, on the one hand, physical comerstones of our existence, and on the other hand the 4 archetypical ways of behaviour (body, work, nature, relationship), which need to be balanced. This ring is used to find the most dense distribution of stems, branches, and the 4 trigrams on the compass. 8 Celestial Stems 12 Terrestrial Branches 4LoShuTrigrams +H,-H,+F,-F ecc. RING 8 THE FLYING STARS Ring 8 of the Lo Pan gives information relative to the computation of the Flying Stars. It elucidates. whether the stars move forwards or backwards. That analysis requires establishing the exacte location of the dwelling within the 8 compass directions, so that it can be determined in which Sectors the facade of the dwelling under investigation falls (crosshair). Each of the 8 compass directions is further subdivided into 3 subsectors; the 2 subsectors which follow each other move in the same direction. To compute a chart, itis also necessary to know the year when the dwelling under review was built or the point in time when the dwelling was renovated or rebuilt. Units of time are compiled in blocks ‘of 180, 60 or 20 years. Anumber between 1 and 9/is assigned to these units, comparable to the 9 ‘Star Ki. The reigning number of the current period is 7 until February 2004, thereafter the reigning number will be 8 (see page 21). In our example, the building is located in the second subsector. Due to the red crosshair, this is the case in each of the 4 compass directions. The numeral which signifies the ‘face’ of a dwelling is called direction star and is placed on the right of the main star numeral, which is placed at the centre grid. The numeral which represents the sitting of a dwelling is known as siting star and is written to the left of the main numeral. Rinc 7 ‘THe FLvING STARS. a Periods Reigning number Classification ‘The upper period 1864 to 1883 1 ear 1884 to 1903 2 abdomen, lower abdomen 1904 to 1923 3 speech organs, feet The middle period 1924 to 1943 4 legs, thighs, hips 1944 to 1963 5 5 1964 to 1983 6 head , symbol of power The lower period 1984 to 2003 7 mouth, tongue 2004 to 2023 8 hand, arm 2024 to 2043 9 eyes Oe eo eteal 8/3 }1 2 3 9] 7+ 5 9 /-7)5 4/2/6 4/2/6 - - To establish the movement of the stars (direction star, sitting star), we must look on the Lo Pan at the original sector of the respective number. - Numeral 2 originally belongs to the SW (ring 2). If, due to the actual location of the building under review, you then look at the second subsector in ring 8, you find that the subsector is red and, thus, moving forward. ~ Numeral 3 originally is connected to the east (ring 2). If, according to the location of the building, you look at the second subsector in ring 8, you find that the colour of the subsector is bright , this indicates a backwards movement. To obtain the arrangement of the numbers within the chart, go back to ring2 and turn the red window until it comes to rest/coincides first with numeral 2 and then with numeral 3. in that way, the various positions of the numbers can be looked up in ring 3 for the forward movement and in ring 4 for the backwards movement. 2 ‘THE SUBSTITUTE FLYING STARS Ring 9 THE SUBSTITUTE FLYING STARS ‘The Substitute Flying stars come into play ,when the placement of a building results in one of the socalled taboo-directions and remains within a tolerance of 3 degrees. In this case , it must be investigated whether the direction star or sitting star can be replaced by another star numeral. Annotations: -direction star and sitting star must be defined in their original trigram -there is no substitute star for number 5 -there is no substitute star at the end of the second and the beginning of the third subsector -a substitute star can be used only if the placement of a building falls within the critical 3 degrees. -Hf the placement of a building comes to rest exactly between 2 trigrams, the Flying Star method can not be applied. numeral 3 in the second subsector is substituted for numeral 2. substitute star for numeral 2 in the second subsector is number 2. Let us assume, the placement of the above-mentioned example almost fell right between subsector 1 and subsector 2. Then, we would need to find out whether numeral 2 and 3 could be substituted for. In that case, itis vital to check number 2 in its original trigram (SW) and in the second subsector. Rinc 10 THE ORGAN Cock, THE ORGAN CLOCK ‘The so-called organ clock shows, at what time of the day a particular organ is active.|f, for ‘example ,a person always wakes up at night at the same time, the organ clock can give us valuable information about which organ is active and the symbolic meaning it represents. { Organ Time Meaning | ce |aro-oi0o] open econ LE | LV | 01.00 - 03.00 _ |anger, accumulative consciosness, past, emotion, authority [of ene0-0800| oan ote ue epesen D1] LI | 05.00 - 07.00 " |attachment to material world nse |ora0-on0] [erate re MP | oP! 09.00 - 11.00 » |nat letting go of past worries. | ve [| 190-1900] [oni jr a etn nam D | St | 13.00- 18.00 Sen ability to separate, difficulty in deciding || 00-700) oma me we [| 0-000] pny ema on 1a] ro] un m0 {ae[ m1 a0-m0 2» THE HUMAN POND Ring 1 THe HUMAN Pond The content of the so-called Human Pond corresponds to the Terrestrial Pond of ring 7, with the difference that it has been moved to the left by 7,5 °. This ring is said to have been created by ‘master Lai Po Yee. The magnetic North is used when investigating a placement within the 8 compass directions with the terrestrial pond of ring 7. Howaver, the star Polaris is used with the human pond. ‘The backgraund colours (elements) do not correspond to the respective sign that is indicated. This ring has been created specifically for the environment of a dwelling. At the basis of this analysis is the so-called host-element, which can be read with the help of this ring at the back (sitting) of a dwelling. With its help , the dynamics at work between the so-called host element and elevations or marked features of the environment (rocks, poles, lamps, narrow, high buildings, and strong Qi-influences) are examined. Sitting of dwelling results in element of fire = Host Point produces host support Point corresponds to the same element friend, prosperity Point is overcome by host materiel! benefit Point is generated by host exhausting, intelligence Point destroys host destruction, power Ring 12 PERSONAL MING KWA 2 PERSONAL MING Kwa OMEN ‘When computing the personal Ming Kwa, the 8 compass directions are divided into various qualities on a yearly basis. These qualities have nothing to do with a place or a building, but depend on the respective person in question. That means, the results of that computation are effective for a whole lifetime, and can be ‘taken along’ to any place. The computation varies for men and women. For men, the computation corresponds to the 9 Star Ki, except that number 5 is substituted for another number. ‘Computation for women Example: 1964 1 | number of year of birth + 5 (constant) 64+5=69 2. | separate number into 2 digits and add them 6+9=15 3 | repeat 2 1+5=6 ‘Computation for men Example: 1956 ‘separate year of birth into 2 digits 7 * | end add them a ‘separate resulting number into 2 digits 2 | and add them alae deduct number from 10 7 3 | rom 2000 onwards from 9) eae Important: When calculating the Ming Kwa, we also need to correct the year of birth, if the person was bom before February 4th/Sth. Example: For a person born on January 21, 1932 we need to use the preceding year , which is 1931 If the computation results in number 5, a substitute number is used, as number 5 belongs to the centre and does not belong to any trigram. Traditionally, a woman with number 5 becomes number 8, a man with number 5 becomes number 2. Personally, | find it more important whether the person in question lives his/her female or male side. ‘The different qualities are included in the table of the Ba Zai, on page 26 . Setting: Turn innermost disc until your personal Ming Kwa number in ring 2 appears against a red background; ring 12 then provides the respective qualities. 6 THE BA ZAI OMEN OF A DWELLING RING 13 10 16 THE BA ZAI OMEN OF A DWELLING Similar to the Ming Kwa, the quality of the 8 different sectors of the house can be investigated concerning the quality of omen. Since they represent a static system, changes and tendencies of these omen can be considered only with the help of astrology. tePanwording ——|ctineserame| +i] quaty | vinvang | means A| is 6 Curses ‘Sha - water 1 Yang wood B WG 5 Spirits ‘Wu Gui . fire 9 Yin earth Cc} uM Termination Jue Ming = metal 7 Yin water D) YN Longevity Yan Nian = metal 6 Yang earth E| HH ‘Caution Ho Hai - earth 2 Yin metal Fy) sq Vitality . ‘Sheng Qi + wood 3 Yang water G | TY | Heavenly doctor Tian Yi ++ earth 8 Yang fire HY) FW Orientation Fu Wei + wood 4 Yin water Adjustment: There are 8 narrow windows in ring 13 to 16, one for each compass direction. Depending on which method is used, turn the middle disc from underneath until the orientation Window appears in the respective sector. Now, the remaining omens for each sector appear. The yellow or orange oval informs us whether the omen is Yin or Yang. The background colour ‘shows the respective element. RING 18 THE DisTRIBUTION OF NA JIA n THE DISTRIBUTION OF NA JIA The subdivision of this ring corresponds to the terrestrial pond of ring 7. The trigrams are used to further subdivide the Ba Zai of ring 13 to 16 in three subsectors. In this context, itis important to determine whether the respective trigram belongs to the western or the eastem group. 2 Pure YIN AND YANG Rin 18 Pure YIN AND YANG ‘The subdivision of this ring corresponds to the terrestrial pond of ring 7. However, Yin and Yang aspects are used, discounting the trigrams. This analyses focuses on whether fihe ace and back of a dwelling dispose of the same qualitiy in terms of Yin and Yang. If this is not the case, you can work with the paths around the building, the turning of the facade or the door to compensate for missing qualities. If this is not possible, Yin and Yang aspects can be used. Rin 19 ‘THE HEAVENLY POND Fy THE HEAVENLY POND ‘The subdivision of this pond is identical with the one of the terrestrial pond of ring 7, however it has been moved to the right by 7.5 °. Master Yang Jun Song is said to have developped the Heavenly Pond. This ring serves primarily for the computation of water, for which exist the most varied formulas. One of them is called ‘Three Harmonies School of double mountains in connection with the 5 ‘elements.’ This technique works by linking up 2 of the 24 mountains of the heavenly pond to 1 of the 12 animals of ring 6. This is called the combination between the 24 mountains and the 12 gods. That method enables us to analyse the course of a water way from various angles. On the ‘one hand, it helps us to decide whether, depending on the dwelling under investigation, it,s useful to lead the water clockwise or counter-clockwise around the house. On the other hand it is a means to determine the best place for the inflow and outflow of the water to or from the estate. ‘Two of the 24 mountains of ring 19 always form together a pair and are linked to one terrestrial branch of ring 6. The ox connects the two mountains -W 20 THE HEAVENLY POND THE HEAVENLY POND Rin 19 ‘There are only 4 sectors where the movement occurs clockwise (Yang) around a place. These correspond to the 4 cardinal animals: rat, hare, horse, and cock, and always consist of 2 ‘mountains of the heavenly pond. The remaining double pairs move counter-clockwise. In the ‘second investigation, the face of the dwelling determines a T Be] eo [eomerctcon wa NT ww | omar Pond | "Srergatal | Sizeionel] about the placement. However, there are different opinions as to which god should be the starting point with regard to the orientation. Other schools claim that ‘prime of life’ should be the first. Nevertheless, the rules are as follows: If water originates from a favourable direction _this is sought to be auspicious. lf water outflows into a favourable direction this is sought to be inauspicious. lf water outlows into an unfavourable direction _ this is sought to be auspicious. tf water originates from an infavourable direction and outlows into an unfavourable direction this is sought to be extremely inauspicous. Ring 20 THE EiGut Spinits oF THE UNDERWORLD a THE EIGHT SPIRITS OF THE UNDERWORLD The term Eight Spirits comprises 2 different methods of computation, one of which is contained in ting 20 and corresponds to the so-called ‘Three Harmonies Water Formula’. In this analysis, the decisive role is played by the orientation of the dwelling . Is the dwelling placed in a sector containing celestial stems oris it placed within one of the secondary directions of the compass such as NW, SE, SW, NE? Then there should not be an outflowing or inflowing water or street in that direction, as that would be unfavourable. Ideally, there should be no road, path, or inflowing water course. Placement of dwelling 2 Stan NUMBERS AND Kwa NUMBERS Ring 21/22 Star NUMBERS AND Kwa NumBERS Ring 21 and 22 are used in combination with each other and belong to the School of San Yuen. ‘The 9 numbers reflect the constellation of the stars of the Great Bear. With these two rings, 4 Important points of the San Yuean School are determined in order to define the ‘Cave of the Dragon’.
