‘Genghis Khan's rule is usually seen as cruel and barbaric. The historians of the states he
conquered, notably the Chinese and Persians suffered greatly at the hands of Genghis and his
descendants. They write about his ruthless, indeed bloodthirsty tactics—massacring whole
cities that resisted him. However, the Mongols see him as the father of their nation, who
introduced a script for writing the Mongol language, and writing, and created a fair system of
laws throughout his empire.’
