Mixed Conditionals

http://www.firstcertificate-course.com

The following is a mini-tutorial on MIXED CONDITIONALS. Once you have completed the tutorial, you
are ready to do the practice exercises.
We have looked at the structures for zero, first, second and third conditionals; however conditional
sentences do not always fall into these patterns. Sometimes they are mixed. This means that a past
event has a result that continues in the present. When this happens, you will see the form of the third
conditional in the if clause and the form of the second conditional in the result clause. Look at these
examples:
If you hadnt spent so much money, you wouldnt be broke now
If he hadnt robbed the bank, he wouldnt be in prison now
If I had eaten lunch, I wouldnt be hungry now
You are now ready to put into practice what you have learned in this tutorial. Go directly to the practice
exercises.
