Louis XIV, the Sun
King, was born.

1648 Peace of
Westphalia ended
the Thirty Years
War.

May 14, 1643


Louis XIV became the
king of France with
Cardinal Mazarin as
the actual minister.

June 9, 1660
Louis XIV married
Maria Theresa of
Spain.

1648-1653 AntiMazarin riots started


the civil war, but they
failed due to mutual
distrust among the
leaders.

1663-1671 French trading


companies were founded and
commercial treaties were
signed.

1661 Cardinal
Mazarin died and
Louis XIV took
control of the
government himself.

1667 Louis gained


12 towns by invading
the Spanish
Netherlands.

1665-1667 France
sided with the Dutch
in the Anglo-Dutch
war.

May 6, 1682 The


construction of the
Palace of Versailles
was completed.

1672-1678 Louis XIV led an


army to the Dutch Netherlands
in order to gain more territory
and brought about the FrancoDutch War. The War was ended
by the Treaty of Nijmegen with
France gaining Franche-Comt.

Louis XIV died in bed,
regretting his actions
and leaving a mixed
legacy to the people.

1701-1714 Other European countries


declared the War of the Spanish
Succession against the Bourbon
dynastys power to prevent the union of
Spain and France. The war was ended
by the Treaty of Utrecht and Great
Britain turned out to be the big winner.
