HISTORIA
W.H. Auden (1907-1973) en su poema, "Otro tiempo", escribi:
"And the public know
What all schoolchildren learn,
Those do whom evil is done,
Do evil in return
Incluso aunque maltrataba verbalmente a mi madre
Yo me atreva a decir pblicamente
Estuve
No recojan dinero bajo falsas pretensiones.
Ningn lpiz labial, no tacones
altos, ningn desodorante, yo quebrant todas las reglas. 'Por qu usted lleva puesto trajes de
hombre y corbata?, ' pregunt. 'Si tanto odia usted a los hombres?' Absurda pregunta, supongo.
No haba
Mis madres no quedaron
impresionadas.
Vinieron a entrevistarme
Nadie quiso or lo
fallado a mis familias.
Erin..... Los libros sobre mujeres amando a mujeres?' 'No puedo, ' contest.
enviaron a mujeres periodistas a atacarme.
mucha importancia a mi desercin y yo estaba indefensa.
incluyendo Rusia. No poseo nada ms que mis cuatro perros y mi gato y yo trabajo
internacionalmente por la Paz y la Familia.

Erin Pizzey, champion of women's rights, says radical feminist plans to let victims of domestic
abuse get away with murder are an affront to morality
moralidad
By Erin Pizzey Julio 2008
Ella ola a incienso y a lavarse poco.
pregunta final fue an ms confusa.

tema de la mujer maltratada, Scream Quietly or The Neighbors Will Hear.
tambin llamadas ellas mismas "feministas".
trabajo yo no he tenido que mantener ninguna posicin poltica.
violentos tiende a crear siguientes relaciones violentas.

Those of us working in the field of domestic violence are confronted daily by the difficult task of
working with women in problematical families. In my work with family violence, I have come to
recognize that there are women involved in emotionally and/or physically violent relationships who
express and enact disturbance beyond the expected (and acceptable) scope of distress. Such
individuals, spurred on by deep feelings of vengefulness, vindictiveness, and animosity, behave in a
manner that is singularly destructive; destructive to themselves as well as to some or all of the other
family members, making an already bad family situation worse. These women I have found it useful to
describe as "family terrorists."
In my experience, men also are capable of behaving as family terrorists but male violence tends to
be more physical and explosive. We have had thousands of international studies about male violence
but there is very little about why or how women are violent. There seems to be a blanket of silence over
the huge figures of violence expressed by women. Because family terrorism is a tactic largely used by
women and my work in the domestic violence field is largely with women, I address this problem
discussing only my work with women.
The potential for family terrorism may rest dormant for many years, emerging in its full might only
under certain circumstances. I found that in many cases it is the dissolution, or threatened dissolution,
of the family that calls to the fore the terrorist's destructiveness. It is essential to understand that prior to
dissolution, the potential terrorist plays a role in the family that is by no means passive. The terrorist is
the family member whose moods reign supreme in the family, whose whims and actions determine the
emotional climate of the household. In this setting, the terrorist could be described as the family tyrant,
for within the family, this individual maintains the control and power over the other members' emotions.
The family of the emotional terrorist well may be characterized as violent, incestuous, dysfunctional,
and unhappy, but it is the terrorist or tyrant who is primarily responsible for initiating conflict, imposing
histrionic outbursts upon otherwise calm situations, or (more subtly and invisibly) quietly manipulating
other family members into uproar through guilt, cunning taunts, and barely perceptive provocations.
(The quiet manipulative terrorist usually is the most undetected terrorist. Through the subtle creation of
perpetual turmoil, this terrorist may virtually drive other family members to alcoholism, to drug-addiction,
to explosive behavior, to suicide. The other family members, therefore, are often misperceived as the
'family problem' and the hidden terrorist as the saintly woman who "puts up with it all.")
While the family remains together, however miserable that "togetherness" might be, the terrorist
maintains her power. However, it is often the separation of the family that promises to rend the
terrorist's domain and consequently to lessen her power. Family dissolution, therefore, often is the time
when the terrorist feels most threatened and most alone, and, because of that, most dangerous.
In this position of fear, the family terrorist sets out to achieve a specific goal. There are many
possible goals for the terrorist, including: reuniting the family once again, or ensuring that the children (if
there are children in the relationship) remain under the terrorist's control, or actively destroying the
terrorist's spouse (or ex-spouse) emotionally, physically, and financially.
To take an extreme parable, when it was evident to Adolph Hitler that winning the War was an
absolute impossibility, he ordered his remaining troops to destroy Berlin: If he no longer could rule, then
he felt it best for his empire to share in his own personal destruction. Similarly, the family terrorist, losing
or having lost supremacy, may endeavor to bring about the ruin (and, in some extreme cases, the
death) of other family members.
The family terrorist, like the political terrorist, is motivated by the pursuit of a goal. In attempting to
"disarm" the family terrorist, it is vital that the practitioner begin intervention by trying to recognize and
understand the terrorist's goal.
The source of the terrorist's goal as in the case of the political terrorist, usually can be understood
to spring from some "legitimate" grievance. The grievance's legitimacy may be regarded in terms of
justified feeling of outrage in response to an actual injustice or injury, or the legitimacy may exist solely
in the mind of the terrorist. Whether this legitimacy be real or imagined, the grievance starts as the
impetus for the terrorist's motivation. One hallmark of an emotional terrorist is that this motivation tends
to be obsessional by nature.
Whence this obsession? Why this overwhelmingly powerful drive? In many cases, that which the
terrorist believes to be the grievance against the spouse actually has very little to do with the spouse.
Although the terrorist may be consciously aware only of the spouse's alleged offense, the pain of this
offense (real or imagined) is invariably an echo of the past, a mirrored recreation of some painful
situation in the terrorist's childhood.
I will not describe here in any detail the types of childhood that tend to create the subsequent
terrorist. I will say, however, that invariably the terrorist's childhood, once understood, can be seen as
violent (emotionally and/or physically). Also invariably, the terrorist can be regarded as a "violence
prone" individual. I define a violence prone woman as a woman who, while complaining that she is the
innocent victim of the malice and aggression of all other relationships in her life, is in fact a victim of her
own violence and aggression. A violent and painful childhood tends to create in the child an addiction to
violence and to pain (an addiction on all levels: the emotional, the physical, the intellectual, the
neurochemical), an addiction that then compels the individual to recreate situations and relationships
characterized by further violence, further danger, further suffering, further pain. Thus, it is primarily the
residual pain from childhood and only secondarily the pain of the terrorist's current familial situation
that serves as the terrorist's motivating impetus. There is something pathological about the terrorist's
motivation, for it is based not so much on reality as on a twisting, a distortion, a reshaping of reality.
Because the emotional terrorist is a violence-prone individual, addicted to violence, the terrorist's
actions must be understood as the actions of an addict. When the family was together, the terrorist
found fulfillment for any number of unhealthy appetites and addictions. When that family then dissolves,
the terrorist behaves with all the desperation, all the obsession, all the single-minded determination of
any addict facing or suffering withdrawal.
The single-mindedness, the one-sidedness of feeling, is perhaps the most important shibboleth of
the emotional terrorist. Furthermore, the extent of this one-sidedness is, for the practitioner, perhaps the
greatest measure and indicator of how extreme the terrorist's actions are capable of becoming.
Any person suffering an unhappy family situation, or the dissolution of a marriage or relationship,
will feel some pain and desperation. A relatively well-balanced person, however, will be not only aware
of their own distress but also sensitive, in some degree, to the suffering of the other family members.
For example, reasonably well-balanced parents, when facing divorce, will be most concerned with their
children's emotional well-being, even beyond their own grief. Not so the emotional terrorist.
To the family terrorist, there is only one wronged, one sufferer, only one person in pain, and this
person is the terrorist herself. The terrorist has no empathy and feels only her own pain. In this manner,
the terrorist's capacity for feeling is narcissistic, solipsistic, and in fact pathological.
Again, I will not attempt here to detail the factors in childhood that lead to the creation of an
emotional terrorist. What is evident, however, in the terrorist's limited or nonexistent ability to recognize
other people's feelings, is that the terrorist's emotions and awareness, at crucial stages of childhood
development, were stunted from reaching beyond the boundaries of self, due to a multiplicity of
reasons. Later, the adult terrorist went on to make a relationship that was, on some level, no true
relationship, but a reenactment of childhood pains, scenarios, situations, and "scripts." Throughout the
relationship, the solipsistic terrorist did not behave genuinely in response to the emotions of other family
members but self-servingly used them as props for the recreation of the terrorist's programme. And
when that relationship finally faces dissolution, the terrorist is aware only of her own pain and outrage
and, feeling no empathy for other family members, will proceed single-mindedly in pursuit of her goal,
whether that goal is reunion, ruin, or revenge. The terrorist's perspective is tempered by little or no
objectivity. Instead the terrorist lives in a self-contained world of purely subjective pain and anger.
Because conscience consists so largely of the awareness of other people's feelings as well as of
one's own, the emotional terrorist's behavior often can be described to be virtually without conscience.
In this lack of conscience lies the dangerous potential of the true terrorist, and again the degree of
conscience in evidence is a useful measure in my work to anticipate the terrorist's destructiveness.
An additional factor, making the terrorist so dangerous, is the fact that the terrorist, while in
positively monomaniacal pursuit of her goal, feels fueled by a sense of omnipotence. Perhaps it is true
that one imagines oneself omnipotent when, in truth, one is in a position of impotence (as in the case of
losing one's familial control through dissolution). Whatever the source of the sensation of omnipotence,
the terrorist believes herself to be unstoppable, and unbound by the constraints or conscience or
empathy, believes that no cost (cost, either to the terrorist or to other family members) is too great to
pay toward the achievement of the goal.
The terrorist, and the terrorist's actions, know no bounds. (The estimation of the extent of the
terrorist's "boundlessness" presents the greatest challenge to my work). Intent only to achieve the goal
(perhaps "hell-bent" is the most accurate descriptive phrase) the terrorist will take such measures as:
stalking a spouse or ex-spouse, physically assaulting the spouse or the spouse's new partners,
telephoning all mutual friends and business associates of the spouse in an effort to ruin the spouse's
reputation, pressing fabricated criminal charges against the spouse (including alleged battery and child
molestation), staging intentionally unsuccessful suicide attempts for the purpose of manipulation,
snatching children from the spouse's care and custody, vandalizing the spouse's property, murdering
the spouse and/or the children as an act of revenge.
In my experience both men and women are equally guilty of the above behavior, but on the whole,
because it is men's dysfunctional behavior that is studied and reported upon, people do not realize that
to the same extent women are equally guilty of this type of violent behavior. My working definition, then,
of a "family terrorist" or an "emotional terrorist" is: a woman or a man (but for the purposes of this work,
I refer only to women) who, pathologically motivated (by unresolved tendencies from a problematical
childhood), and pathologically insensitive to the feelings of other family members, obsessionally seeks
through unbounded action to achieve a destructive (and, therefore, pathological) goal with regard to
other family members.
Of course, this defining profile pertains to individuals in differing degrees. Many people, unhappy
within a relationship or made unhappy by the dissolution of a relationship, may lapse into periods of
"irrational" behavior. What characterizes the terrorist, however, is that the vindictive and destructive
behaviors are consistent; the moments of calm and periods of lucidity are the lapses, temporary lulls in
the storm.
There are also women who, suffering chagrin and misery during or after the life spans of a
relationship, appear far more self-destructive than destructive to anyone else. For the other partner,
contemplating leaving this kind of individual, the very thought of leaving such a person is made difficult
and untenable by such frequently uttered protestations as "I cannot live without you," and "Without you,
I might as well be dead." To be sure, many women exist, extremely dependent within their relationships,
who, probably having suffered severe emotional betrayal during their childhood, genuinely feel that their
life outside a relationship would be so lonely as to be unbearable.
It is difficult to leave such a woman, and the man attempting to leave may well feel that, by leaving,
he would be responsible for delivering a mortal blow to an already pathetic wretch. Men also, are often
kept in their relationships, which can only be likened to "personal concentration camps," by the fact that
they feel a genuine feeling of "chivalry" towards their partner. Women tend to put so much more of
themselves into their relationships and therefore suffer when these relationships fall apart.
There is a valid question as to whether or not this sort of suicidally-inclined individual may be
deemed a terrorist. (To many minds, this kind of individual, no doubt, would seem to fall more within the
category of "emotional black-mailer.") I believe that, sadly, there are people, deeply damaged by their
childhood, who genuinely cannot face life by themselves. When dealing with such potential cases,
however, I try to make the leaving partner understand that the suicidal inclinations predate the
relationship by many years, and that, however tragic the situation, one person simply cannot be held
responsible for keeping another person alive.
In some individuals, the authentic (though unhealthy) longing for death is a longing planted within
them since early childhood, and there is very little a partner can do to alter the apparently inevitable
course of that longing.
Among true terrorists, however, threats of suicide can be seen to serve a largely manipulative role.
In short, the terrorist says, "If you can't do as I tell you, I will kill myself." Whether suicide remains only a
threat or is realized, the true terrorist uses suicide not so much as an expression of desperate grief but
as a weapon to be wielded against others.
In working with clients struggling either in relationships or with the dissolution of a relationship, I am
faced with many questions, all relevant to gauging the woman's terrorist potential:
Will the woman persevere in her efforts to financially ruin her partner?
Is she sincere when she promises to kill her partner, or have him killed, should he ever become
involved in a new relationship?
Are the threats of suicide genuine or manipulative?
Will she carry out the promises of using the law to "kidnap" the children in order to hurt the ex-partner?
Will she brain-wash the children to such an extent that her ex-partner dare not form a new
relationship?
Emotional terrorism is by no means confined to the family context. I know an extremely successful
woman in the world of fine arts. This woman has been haunted by a former assistant who, vicariously
imagining herself to the writer herself, dresses like her, stalks her, and issues public statements that it
was she, not the writer, who created the works of art for which the writer is internationally famous. If the
writer is to ensure her own safety, then very definite steps must be taken.
In situations of emotional and family terrorism, there are two areas of work to be done: practical
measures of protection ("strategies for survival") on the part of family members, and therapeutic work
with the terrorist himself or herself. I must reiterate at this stage, that both men and women are capable
of terrorist tactics but men tend to behave in a more physically violent manner within the family. Women,
as I have shown, use far more subtle tactics, i.e., that of the terrorist as opposed to outright war.
The first step, on the part of other family members, toward limiting the terrorist's destructive
potential is to understand the terrorist to be a terrorist. In a recent case, a Mr. Roberts described to me
how, during his marriage, he and his children faced a daily onslaught of verbal abuse from his wife. Mrs.
Roberts was also physically violent to the children. Now that he has asked for a divorce, she is making
use of every weapon in her arsenal. In the children's presence, she has used drugs and drunk alcohol
to the point of extreme intoxication. She has staged several unsuccessful suicide attempts in front of the
children, threatened over the telephone to "do something stupid," promised to kill Mr. Roberts new
partner, and assured Mr. Roberts that when she has finished with him he will not have a penny to his
name. To Mr. Roberts, all of this behavior seemed perfectly usual.
After all, he had witnessed this sort of commotion for thirteen years of their marriage. When I
suggested to him, "What you endured is emotional terrorism," he suddenly and for the first time was
able to see his situation clearly. Now, he realized, his wife's behavior was neither appropriate nor
acceptable. No, this was not the treatment that every man should expect from his wife, either in or out
of marriage. No, he does not want his children to be subjected to such extreme behavior any longer.
The fact of recognizing a terrorist is the essential first step. Then, because a terrorist is fueled by a
feeling of omnipotence and is prepared to behave without bounds, usually encouraged by feminist
therapists who insist that their clients suffer from "low self esteem," pragmatic measures must be taken
to define clearly the boundaries of acceptable behavior.
Unfortunately the legal situation which many divorce agreements mandate is open-ended.
Certainly, when both parties to a divorce are reasonably well-balanced, it is entirely fitting for the
settlement to be flexible enough to incorporate changing financial circumstances, child-care capabilities,
and visitation rights. When, however, one party to the divorce is an emotional terrorist, then both the
confrontational divorce procedure and the resultant open-ended divorce settlement provide infinite
opportunity for the courts, lawyers, and the entire battery of psychologists called in for evaluations, to be
used as the terrorist's weapons. In these cases, the court and the divorce procedure provide no
boundaries for the terrorist; instead they allow the terrorist to continue to behave boundlessly.
For this reason, when dealing with a terrorist, it is best for the divorce procedure and final decree to
be as swift, as final, as absolute, as unequivocal as possible. Every practitioner or attorney handling
divorces is familiar with clients described as "litigious." ["Tar baby" is a popular term among Colorado
lawyers.] Only when "litigiousness" is seen as a manifestation of terrorism can the course to swift and
precise legal settlement be steered.
To limit the terrorist's feelings of omnipotence, there are many effective measures. The guiding
principle, as in the handling of political terrorists, must be: "There is no negotiating with terrorists."

lives because he was a danger to them and to their mother this still left me with the
dilemma of the violent and dysfunctional mother. This is when my concept of the
need for a therapeutic community was born.
Those of you who have followed my work will know that almost immediately I set up
the refuge for women and children, I also managed to find a house at a pepper corn
rent for men. I was unable to raise any funds from any source to support the need of
fathers fleeing violent women or even to support men who wanted to come to terms
with their violent past.
In the intervening years I watched the break down of marriages, the rise of the single
parent and the state subsidy of a single parent life style. Certainly, I was grateful to
the state in England for the money. Women fleeing violent relationships before I
opened the refuge were told to go back to their partners. Now it was possible to get
support for victims of violence and for women abandoned by their partners. What I
had not envisaged at that time is that the well meaning and compassionate support
given to victims would result in the creation of a social upheaval that completely
redesigned the structure of our society.
I was despised and ridiculed from the very beginning of my work for daring to talk
about the role of violent women in the families that came to my refuge. In the very
early days the militant left blamed capitalists i.e. rich men for all the ills of society.
By the beginning of the seventies women turned on all men and blamed patriarchy
for everything. What was left out of the equation as usual was the role of women in
wrong doing. As women and particularly as mothers, women were exempt from any
wrong doing.
As men were either pushed out of their families or were feckless and abandoned their
partners and children, an army of single parent mothers and children grew into
unimaginable proportions. The majority of women suffered and tried their best to
raise their children on miniscule amounts of money allowed by the state. They were
only too aware of the strains of raising their children single handed without fathers.
However, many women were as feckless as the men they chose as partners. Unable to
prioritize the needs of their children, promiscuous and often violent, they terrorized
their children and their neighbourhoods.
Many times I have talked with exhausted social workers about what is happening on
the vast estates across England to the families without fathers. Some homes do have
fathers but most have not. They are very dangerous places and when fragile innocent
women find themselves rehoused on those estates the prognosis for the family is dire.
They are discriminated against and their children are bullied and harassed. In my day
social workers called the dysfunctional families dustbin families now the pc words
are socially excluded and less pc the underclass.
We are guilty of the burgeoning underclasses. Successive governments have ignored
these families at their peril. I did a small study many years ago counting the children
that my violence prone mothers brought through the door. In those days the average
was 2.1 children per family. In my families I could point to 5.1. children. Because
most of the women were promiscuous, many of the children had different fathers.
Hoping to hold on to a man resulted in the woman trying to carry his child. I warned
then that in time those feral children who were denied good loving parents, decent
education and job opportunities would flood our streets.
In fact this is what is happening now. While it is the boys that largely murder, maim
and commit suicide, the role of the girls on the streets is just as abused and abusive.
The gang culture is now the family for children alienated and excluded from their
families and from their schools. For the children denied good role models from their
absent fathers, many are also deprived of any love, warmth or protection from their
mothers. Is it any wonder that they join gangs that become surrogate families?
After the death of my mother when I was seventeen, I ran away from my family and
ended up in a hostel in London. Very soon I discovered a gang of young teenagers
living on the embankment and before long I joined them. It was a different time and
place. There was some violence but not amongst our teenagers. I remember with
great affection all those young teenagers who, like me, had suffered in their parents
hands. They understood me and I understood them. We took care of each other,
something that had not happened in my life. I can well understand the gang culture.
A child like me who was hated by my mother and disliked by my father would
naturally find solace in a gang of other children. To the outsider the gang-related
violence is abhorrent. To the teenagers in the gang it is normal. Why not? If all your
life you have been beaten and have watched your parents beating each other, the
violence has long become a way of life. But surely, the well meaning say, But surely
if youve spent your childhood in a violent family the one thing you would not want to
do is to repeat it. Violence is a learned pattern of behaviour in early childhood.
These teenagers are marinated in violence, a wonderful description I read in the
work of Dr. Bruce Perry. Most will continue the violence they witnessed and suffered
as children, a few will transcend the violence and make good their lives.
Although I believe that a dysfunctional and feckless father in a family is a tragedy, I
also believe that when the mother is unable to mother her children and is violent
towards them and unable to offer them love and approval, then the effect on her
children is truly catastrophic. We now know that young babies brains are plastic and
much of the brain is formed by the very early experience that the child assimilates
from the primary carers. In my families, fighting, screaming, throwing of objects,
swearing and using knives and other weapons constituted a normal life for the
children that came to my refuge. I also noticed that while the boys showed much
greater signs of physical aggression and explosive behaviour, the girls responded by
imploding with anger. They mutilated themselves, suffered from eating disorders and
bullied the younger, weaker children.
Until we are able to discuss the lack of both mothering and fathering in these
childrens lives, the violence on our streets will continue. Until mothers are also held
responsible for their behaviour towards their children we will not see much change. It
is probably too late for millions of feral teenagers in England. The only chance they
have is if the government of the day decide to reintroduce a form of National Service.
All children from the age of sixteen to eighteen who are not taking a place in higher
education must join up. I remember my cousin Michael who was orphaned at a very
young age. He left school and was on a hopelessly downward trajectory. I also
remember seeing him arrive at our front door with a friend both scrubbed and
polished in their army uniforms. Saved by two years structured and disciplined living,
he went on to become a successful business man and father. National Service saved a
generation of children in the fifties and it could save this generation if we ignore the
limp protests of the liberal brigade and get on with the business of saving our
fractured society.

(f) require that the mother give up the child for adoption before more lives are
ruined
In one fell swoop would the problem be solved by these measures, which will
have the effect of encouraging greater parental interest in controlling their
offspring.
Justice Coleridge has mentioned the cancerous increase in family
breakdowns and said that the collapse is at a scale and severity that would
have been unimaginable even 10 years ago.
What is certain is that almost all of societys social ills can be traced directly
to the collapse of the family life, he said.
However, Mr Justice Coleridge, who heads family courts in the south west of
England, did not criticise single parents directly.
I am not saying every broken family produces dysfunctional children but I am
saying that almost every dysfunctional child is the product of a broken family.
And what is government doing to recognise and face up to the emerging
situation? The answer is: very little and nothing like enough.
It is fiddling whilst Rome burns.

Your assessment is correctall the stats show it..all the annecdotal evidence
shows it. Women are going to be killed, raped, robbed and generally abused in
vastly increasing numbers as these uncontrollable boys raised by single women
realise that the average bystander will no longer intervene if they abuse a

Hi Erin
Hope you dont mind me sending you a personal message here.
I used to live in Chiswick until recently and saw that you just had a birthday on
Chiswick W4 newsletter and the followed links and read about all the things
you have done. I am a local photographer and would love to take some

I am not in an abusive relationship but am interested in your work and hope to

Dear Erin,
I went to Chiswick Comp in the early 70s and often walked past the Chiswick
refuge on the way home. It seemed like a ghost house. Bleak. Frightening.
Mysterious.
All those open windows. No one had THAT many open windows. Best kept awayfrom!
The 27, 117 and 267 buses passed by. I knew Chiswick well.
I was clueless, impressionable, but observant.
And now, nearly 40 years later, I read the most extraordinary things written by
the august EP. And, in the early 70s, you were august. Even among spotty little
teenagers.
Thats the womens refuge run by Erin Pizzey, wife of the TV bloke.
But in 2009 I see that youve got only five replies to your blog above. The fifth
in February of this year. And now mine; the sixth, 17 months after you posted.
Thats is no criticism of you, Erin. As if youd need to care!
But it is a statement of the times in which we live. Global mega-trends are not
yet running your way. But they will. One day. In a couple of generations from
now. Take a very deep breath. Train you grandchildren to think different.
Apart from the remedy of national service, your analysis is right. And guess
what: I, a right-wing, fundamentalist, bigoted, Bible-believing Christian believe
as do you that marriage needs to be re-invented.
And so do my four home-educated children (except that they wish to live and
work anywhere but pagan, secular-humanistic Britain. One, 22, lives in S Africa;
another, 20, lives in Italy.
Converting the world. Really!
Anyway, I enjoyed your piece.
And if ever youre passing Luppitt (look up Triplands), please drop in.
Itd would be a joy!
One of the most interesting debates in the new century might well be the question of
how and why the womens movement in the Western world was founded? Did it, as
many of the women journalists explained, rise from the needs of the oppressed
women of the world? Or was it manufactured by leftist women tired of being
relegated to the role of chief cook and bottle washers in the kitchens of their
revolutionary lovers? According to Susan Brownmiller in her excellent history of the
womens movement, In Our Time, Memoir of a Revolution, the womens movement
was founded in New York after many of the female activists returned from Mississippi
after attempting to help black people register their votes. The men in the
revolutionary movements who expected them to take inferior roles hugely
discouraged the women activists. The famous quote from Stokely Carmichael when
asked about the position of women in the forthcoming revolution was: What is the
position of women in SNCC (Student Non-violent Co-ordinating Committee)? The
position of women in SNCC is prone. Thereby precipitating a revolution the outcome
of which, even the most dedicated of Black Panthers would be unable to imagine.
I joined this amorphous movement in 1971 when Jill Tweedie and other left wing
journalists were writing in newspapers and magazines that what women needed were
several very sensible demands. There was a national sigh of relief from millions of
women in Britain whose only reading matter was filled with cooking and knitting
patterns. With the exception of SHE magazine which was run by the redoubtable
lesbian Nancy Spain, most of us were lectured on how to be perfect housewives.
The Guardian gave details of how to contact this new, exciting, liberation movement
for women and I telephoned the main telephone number in London and was directed
to my local group in Chiswick. I left my husband facing his first night of baby sitting
the children and set off for my meeting. I was less than impressed to find myself in a
very big house hosted by a small woman with a sharp tongue. If I thought I was going
to join a movement that was going to lessen my isolation with my two small children I
was wrong. Your problem is not your isolation, I was told. Your problem is your
husband; he oppresses you. I looked at the other white middle class women in the
room with me and tried not to blush. We were also told that we were to call ourselves
a collective, to refer to each other as comrades and pay three pounds ten [1] to join
the Womens Liberation Movement. There were posters of fierce women waving guns
over their head and a very large portrait of Chairman Mao on the wall. The violence of
the posters upset me because I was a child born in 1939 a child born into a terrible
war.
I was born in China in 1939. My father was working in the Consular Service. Both
parents were friends of Chaing Kai Shek who was exiled to Taiwan by the communists.
My parents and my brother who returned to China in 1942 were captured by the
communists and put under house arrest for several years. My twin sister and myself
believed them to be dead. My fathers hatred and disgust for any totalitarian regime
left its mark on me and I was offended by what I saw as a manipulative attempt for
the local communist party to add my three pounds ten shillings to their account.
Still I passionately believed that women in this country needed a place to meet and to
organise in their local areas. I was aware of a huge group of isolated women many of
whom had invaluable natural gifts and some work experiences that we could use to
work in our own communities. I braved the hostility towards my high heels and my
make up in the womens liberation office and took over the typing.
I didnt last long. What I saw happening were groups of left leaning white middle class
women gathering together to hate men. Their slogan was make the personal
political. What I could see happening was that the most veciferous and the most
violent of the women took their own personal damage, their anger against their
fathers and expanded their rage to include all men. Many of these women were trust
fund bunnies meaning that they lived off their rich fathers money. What made the
movement so immediately violent, was the fact that it was founded in England by
American women who were on the run from the FBI. This was not the first time
America exported its revolutionaries. Trotsky was deported along with other
revolutionaries years before. Some went to Germany to join the Baader-Meinhof
revolutionaries.
Others went to Holland to join the Red Stockings and some chose to come to England.
England seemed destined to become the revolutionary hot bed for terrorists all over
the world Beirut by the Thames. I was at a BBC party when the taxpayers shelled out
to pay for all the famous revolutionaries to be flown in from across the world to make
a BBC programme. I watched Danny The Red, argue with the sweating producer that
he wanted bigger expenses and a more comfortable hotel. Kenneth Tynan kept
spitting all over me declaiming that we should take over the BBC and launch the
revolution ourselves. I was also forced to attend a tedious lecture where Bernadette
Devlin harangued us and various Black Panthers gave salutes. A row of BBC would-be
revolutionaries raised their pallid fists in reply. In 1970 terrorist women from groups
everywhere poured into London for the first Womens Liberation March, but by this
time I was becoming far more politically aware.
I stood up in many of the violent and threatening collectives to tell the leaders of this
movement that hating all men was not anything that I wanted to be part of. I told
them that I considered my life a luxury. I had a husband who went to work and paid
the mortgage so that I could stay home with my two children. I reminded them that
apart from a small group of men who internationally ruled in their countries, most
people were slaves. I reminded them of the murderous regimes of Mao and of Stalin,
but of course many of those women were followers of both Mao and Stalin. Their
attitude was that if thirty million died for the cause of the revolution, so be it. I was
hated with a passion and finally ironically, excluded from the liberation movement.
I left to open a small community centre for women and their children so that my
vision of the lessening of the isolation found in the Western world due to the breaking
down of the extended family could be ameliorated. For many months this little
community centre for women and their children attracted all sorts of women eager to
have a place where they could use their abilities and entertain their children. Very
soon women who avoided the statutory services came to us and we befriended them.
Then one day a woman came in to the little upstairs office and took off her jersey.
Her body was streaked with black and purple bruising. My husband beats me, she
said. I took her home that night rather than leave her on her own.
However, from the very beginning I was aware of the violence of some of the women
coming into my refuge. By this time I had attracted the two things the womens
movement wanted. A just cause to clothe their political agenda, and money to fund
this agenda. By 1972 the womens movement had run out of money. Ordinary English
women were far too intelligent and educated to want to be included into a movement
that so obviously desired to destroy the family and men. Only the very isolated
pockets of women living in areas like grizzly Islington and Kew, refused to let their
boy children have any male toys, and boasted that their husbands or lovers had now
been changed over night into new men. The rest of us accepted that men would
always be men and any help in the house was gratefully accepted.
While the bra-burning movement became a figure of fun in jokes on television and in
newspapers, the movement slid into obscurity except in certain newspapers and in
the academic circles. Here the misandry of the womens movement found its
exponents amongst untenured women professors. What they could do was to create a
whole new ideology called Womens Studies and brain-wash generations of young
women coming into Universities.
I found schools filled with teachers, who were not teachers but political activists. I
went to Universities to lecture and was roundly hated when I pointed out that 62 of
the first hundred women who came into the refuge were as violent as the men they
left. I addressed public meetings and talked about battered men. Since Domestic
Violence, was considered a female issue it was women journalists who covered the
subject. If I tried to interest newspapers to publish my views, I came up against the
same problem. I was in the hands of women editors who refused to allow me to
publish. Things were no better in the publishing field; editors routinely censor books
especially the radical lesbian editors. There was and still is, a heavy censorship
against anyone trying to break the code of silence. No one wants to acknowledge the
extent of the damage that the feminist movement has done to the family and to men
in the last thirty years. Melanie Phillips wrote The Sex Change Society [2] also in 1999.
I advised her that our protagonists would refuse to surface and reply to her wellresearched history of Feminised Britain and the Neutered Male, as she so aptly put
it.
Over the last thirty years I saw great corruption in the English courts. I saw fathers of
children denied their rights and persecuted. I saw our own government concur to a
television advertisement on Scottish television where children were advised to
contact a telephone number should their fathers shout and their mothers. I had a very
early memory of a small girl of my own age also living in China during the time of the
Communist take over, who denounced her father who was taken from the family and
tortured for seven years. I watched as the consciousness raising groups, which again
reminded me of Maos teachings, spread like a rash over the Western world designed
to brain-wash women into believing that their husbands were the enemy and must be
eradicated from the family. I saw the rise of the single parent mother glorified in the
womens sections of some newspapers. Four women journalists wrote about their
search for the right man to give them their children and the four women promised
their readers that the children would never even know their fathers. I felt that these
rich privileged women journalists were acting irresponsibility, by now I was divorced
from my husband and I was a single parent mother and suffered the anxiety and the
loneliness of bringing up children on my own.
Most of all I saw feminist women teachers discriminate against the boys in their
classrooms. I saw the huge tide of women pouring into the work force hungry for jobs
and careers. Many had no choice. Financial hardship made it imperative for both
partners to work. In spite of promises there was no national childcare plan, so illegal
and often dangerous attempts were made by other women to take in children. Men,
free of any restraint by the birth pill demanded sex whenever they wanted it and then
many ran away from the subsequent pregnancies. London became not only the
abortion capital of the world, but also had the highest level of teenage births in the
West. Men turned their backs on marriage and commitment, many fearing quite
rightly that whatever commitment they offered would end up with women fleecing
them for the rest of their lives.
In 1977 Congresswoman Lindy Boggs and Congressman Newton-Steer invited me to a
luncheon of honour on Capitol Hill. I realised by now that what I was going to say was
going to make me deeply unpopular. Everyone who came to meet me always assumed
quite wrongly that I was a feminist. I was nothing of the sort. I have always
disbelieved in ists of any sort and the only way I am willing to define myself is as a
lover of God in all his aspects. By the end of my speech everyone at the table was
avoiding me and I fared no better at the Press Club in Washington. The expression on
the faces of the hard-bitten women journalists was a source of amusement to me.
Many of my speaking engagements were cancelled especially in New York and Boston.
I spent a hilarious night with another member of staff in a communal lesbian
household of professors in Anne Arbour, but I was very glad indeed to be hosted in
another city by a sweet young wife and mother. I could see then that the feminist
movement everywhere had hi-jacked the whole issue of domestic violence to fulfil
their political ambitions and to fill their pockets. By now feminists in America and
other countries were redrafting the law. In the past decade, feminist legal theory
has become a formidable presence in many of Americas top law schools. Feminist
activism has also had a major impact on many areas of the law, including rape, self-
defence, domestic violence, and such new legal categories as sexual harassment.
However, the ideology of legal feminism today goes far beyond the original and
widely supported goal of equal treatment for both sexes. The new agenda is to
redistribute power from the dominant class (men) to the subordinate class
(women), and such key concepts of Western jurisprudence as judicial neutrality and
individual rights are declared to be patriarchal fictions designed to protect male
privilege.[3]
My sojourn in Germany at the invitation of the German Minister for Sport was no
different. I left some very grim looking German refuge workers at a dinner table
because I could no longer bear the future of what the refuges were to become. I
watched the feminist movement build its bastions of hatred against men fortresses
where women were to be taught that all men were rapists and bastards and the
destruction of the children in the refuge who were to learn that men were not to be
trusted.
I was asked to visit New Zealand in 1978 and Id hoped to be invited to speak to
groups of refuge in Australia. At that time New Zealand hadnt yet fallen into the
arms of the totalitarian womens movement (it has now), I was refused a visit to
Australia because the militant lesbian movement there had control of most of the
refuges. Since, as in many other countries, the Lesbian movement was in control of
most the financing, they merely instructed the Australian refuges to withdraw their
invitations. I was anathema to the womens movement and too many politicised
women who moved from the outside of the establishment and were now making their
way up the power ladder in the government.
To show how this movement had the power to censor information I will quote one
example amongst many. In 1984 I gave evidence in San Antonio to The Texas Force on
Family Violence. There was huge trepidation in the minds of the various shelter
groups who were gathered there to give their testimony. Woman after woman gave
her personal evidence.
In some cases the evidence was grim and dreadful. Those were the genuine victims of
their partners violence. However, many of the women giving evidence gave a bravura
performance, which elicited much clapping from the audience of excitable sisters,
but puzzled the members of the Attorney Generals Task Force. I understand your
grief, one of the women members said to a particularly histrionic woman, But you
said this happened to you ten years ago? Dont you think it is time you moved on? She
spoke for most of her task force who were very puzzled by what they could see as a
definite split between the women who were genuinely giving evidence and the others
who were violence prone women who were not innocent victims of their partners
violence but were violent themselves. I gave my evidence about the differences
between women who were genuine battered women and those that were violent
themselves and needed treatment. The committee thanked me and I received a
standing ovation from the audience. When the report arrived at my home in Santa Fe,
it recorded one meaningless sentence and referred to me as Erin Shapiro author.
Even though my written evidence was submitted in the name of Erin Pizzey and my
standing as the founder of the refuge movement was well known to everyone.
By this time I was working in Santa Fe, New Mexico on child abuse cases and against
paedophiles. Here is where I discovered that there were just as many women
paedophiles as there were men. Women go undetected as usual. Working against
paedophiles is a very dangerous business. I rescued a little British girl from a female
paedophile in Britain while I was in New Mexico. It took three years of fighting against
the English courts to rescue her and return her to her parents. When the official
solicitor finally telephoned me and said I was right all along, the child had been
abused, I asked him if he was going to prosecute the woman. No, he said. Yet
another woman got away and is still getting away with abusing children.
During all these years that I worked and specialised in working with violent women
and their children, I could never come to terms with the fear men had of violent
women. I sat around dinner tables and in sitting rooms, listening to the feminist
women abusing the men they lived with. I saw some women running what amounted
to mini concentration camps behind their front doors. I rarely ever saw a father stand
up to a violent wife or lover. I hardly ever saw a father stop his wife abusing the
children. They would come to me for help but when faced with an angry and violent
partner the men stayed quiet and tolerated the violence. Even now people laugh
when a man says he has been abused. I dont find any sort of abuse to any living thing
a laughing matter. I do feel that it is time that men recognised that women in the last
thirty years have made many changes. They have become much more independent of
men but men have not yet made that step themselves. It is depressing when working
with men to find them running out of one violent relationship and then immediately
looking for another woman to look after them. Men have to get used to the idea that
they can look after themselves. The younger generations of men seem to be aware of
this male dependence upon women and can and do live by themselves.
When I was in Santa Fe, a man came to see me who had lost his children and
everything he owned because his little daughter had accused him of molesting her. I
knew from the moment he confessed that he was a womaniser that he wasnt a child
molester.
After seeing the mother who was a violent and manipulative narcissistic exhibitionist,
I realised that she had instructed the child to name her father. I could see from the
behaviour of the child that she had indeed been molested. Finally after three months
of work with her she told me that the molester was a man who lived across the road.
This man was a government official. When I took the evidence I had to the D.As office
he refused to target the case. A state trouper who also tried to get cases targeted
told me the DA was divorced on grounds of suspected child molestation so I had no
chance anyway. I knocked on all the doors of the private houses I could find around
his house and warned the neighbours. Many of them knew but were too frightened of
him to do anything. When I confronted him he told me he was safe from prosecution
because of his position and he would move his family to Alaska where there was less
chance of being convicted. He had, like so many violent and dangerous men, married
a bride from the Philippines. She didnt dare say anything. Another little girl told me
that her father, his new wife, and a neighbour raped her every Saturday afternoon
during her access visit. I asked what hurt her the most about the abuse and she said
her nails they are very long and sharp in my and she pointed to her bottom. Those
are the terrible details that confirm horrible truths.
Part of the problem with men is that they do not want to accept that woman and
particularly the women they have loved can be just as evil as men can. When I was in
Canada for a six weeks lecture tour in 1999, I was appalled at the fear I saw in men
across this huge country. Sexual harassment cases at work mean that there are
virtually no more office parties. I met a very fine professor who had been accused of
sexual abuse of two of his students. He said living in Canada was like living in a
totalitarian state. Indeed it was. I spoke to groups of men and women all over the
country. Men there were already feeling the heavy hand of the state taking away their
rights to their homes and their children. Men told stories of leaving the house to go to
work and returning to find the woman had hovered the house which means she had
taken everything she could out of the house and disappeared with the children into a
refuge. The distraught fathers were unable to find their wives and children because
the refuges refused to disclose any information. In some cases where the father was
very violent it is a necessary precaution but I never intended it to become routine so
that many delinquent women could use this recourse against totally innocent men.
For a woman, declaring your partner violent is a known fast track to a divorce. If that
isnt sufficient women can now recourse to what is called the silver bullet. This
means that she accuses her partner of sexually molesting the children. He then is cut
off from his home and his family immediately. I was speaking to mens group in the
West Country recently. Two police officers were at the meeting. They agreed when I
asked them about the truth of false sexual abuse. They were indeed forced to take a
father away from his family even though there was no evidence. In this case a woman
had accused the childs father of having interfered with her in her bath. She called
the police and he was taken away immediately. Later he was released for lack of
evidence. We should have a law that allows innocent victims of such allegations to sue
their attackers. There is no evidence needed; just a womans hand on the telephone
and the man is taken away.
I find that men will not help each other the way women do. Men have had thousands
of years of conditioning that enables them to work together very successfully but
when it comes to organising the same sort of help over their personal lives, they fall
apart. I saw this happen when I tried to open a mens refuge almost immediately after
I bought the main Chiswick building for the womens refuge. I had seen sufficient men
who were horribly abused and needed somewhere to go. What offended me was that
even though the Greater London Council were willing to give me an excellent building
in North London, I could not get one single fund raiser to help me raise money for the
men.
Now we do have mens groups running in most countries. But as yet they have no
funding. Meanwhile millions of pounds are given to the womens refuges, some of
which abuse the money they are given. We know we have huge problems with our
young men. For the last thirty years they have been discriminated against in the
media and in schools. These young men have been fed a diet of feminist rhetoric that
assures them that they are rapists and batterers. Those were the placards that
surrounded The Savoy Hotel when I was there for a luncheon and the launch of my
book Prone To Violence [4].
This was my book that catalogued my work with violence-prone women and their
children. I was used to the pickets because anywhere I spoke or appeared I was
followed by these hate filled women. I was aware that they held their secret
conferences that excluded men all over the world. They have infiltrated most large
institutions and the UN is filled with women who are determined to destroy the family
and marriage as an institution. They want the family to be defined as women and
children only. Men are to be sidelined. Their role as fathers is to be used as sperm
banks and wallets. Fortunately those of us who believe in marriage and in the
necessity of children having both biological parents in their lives if at all possible,
have time on our side. The womens movement is dying out as the elderly proponents
now write books recanting their misspent youth and totter to their graves. We
discover thanks to Mike Horowitzs interesting book, Hating Whitey and Other
Progressive Causes, [5] that Betty Friedan was a Stalinist Marxist. I was so aware of
the political background of so many of the so-called leaders of the movement that I
wrote a passage in one of my novels, First Lady. [6] This is the communist agent who
is a tutor at one of Englands major universities speaking. He is quoting the Russian
Presidents wife:
Ill tell you. It was actually the Prime Ministers wife who came up with
the answer. Lovely woman, she was. And she looked at me while she
spoke. I remember the exact words she said: You always subvert the
women first, as in Africa, offering them contraception, free doctors,
abortions and the rest.
Indeed it was while I was working with missionaries in the African bush in Senegal
when I first saw the communists giving away free transistor radios to African women.
My missionaries tried to lure the same women into their clinic with medical help and
then a lesson from the bible. My conclusion about the way in which the feminist
movement spread is that it was not nearly as spontaneous as the feminists would have
us believe. I was there in those early days and I marvelled at the organisation and the
amounts of money that were floating about. Almost any dissident group, except for
myself because I was not one of them, could have an office and a telephone for the
asking. What grieves me is the damage that has been done and has been allowed to
be done by men unwilling to tackle the problem of violent women. We know that
women perpetrate sixty per cent of all child abuse. According to the U.S. Dept. of
Health and Human Services, Over 75 percent of perpetrators of child maltreatment
were parents, and an additional 10 percent were other relatives of the victim. It is
estimated that over 80 percent of all perpetrators were under age 40 and that almost
two-thirds (62%) were females.[7]
The NSPCC research by Susan Creighton (1992) concludes that children are At greater
risk with either mother only, or mother and father substitute. And that Natural
mothers were recorded as the perpetrator most frequently for the physical injury,
emotional abuse, neglect and N+P (neglect and physical abuse cases.) [8] This is
where the core problem lies. Women who themselves have been unmothered and
victims of dysfunctional family life cannot be asked to mother their children as if all
that is needed is a magic wand. I am convinced that Tony Blair will be remembered
for his 540 programme called Sure Start. This will begin to give new parents a
chance to learn all those important lessons that most children from normal happy
families learn at their parents knees. Even if we want to turn our backs on men and
women who are victims of domestic violence with the uncharitable thought that they
made their beds and they must lie upon them. We must care for the children of those
relationships who do not have any choice but to be born into a family where
degradation and horror is their every day life. Women have for the last thirty years
been able to blame men for every aspect of domestic violence. Now men have to have
the courage to point to the irrefutable international research figures that show that
violent neglectful and dysfunctional mothering is at the heart of the problem of
violent parenting.
