1st Term Examination February 2014
Subject Name: CAD
Code: ME -304

Time: 1.30 hrs.

M. Marks: 50

NOTE: All sections are compulsory. Attempt any one question from Section A and Section B. All the questions
in Section C are compulsory. Students are not allowed to leave the examination hall before half time of exam.
Section A
Q1. A jet of water of diameter 75mm moving with a velocity of 25m/s strikes a fixed plate in such a way that the
angle between the jet and plate is 60. Find the force exerted by the jet on the plate
(i) In the direction normal to the plate (ii) in the direction of the jet.
(15)
OR
Q2. A jet of water of diameter 50mm moving with a velocity of 40m/s strikes a curved fixed symmetrical plate
at the centre. Find the force exerted by the jet of water in the direction of the jet, if the jet is deflect
through an angle of 120at the outlet of the curved plate.
(15)
Section B
Q3. A jet of water of diameter 30mm strikes a hinged square plate at the centre with a velocity of 20m/s. The
plate is deflected through an angle of 20. Find the weight of the plate.
If the plate is not allowed, to swing, what will be the force required at the lower edge of the plate to keep
the plate in vertical position.
(15)
OR
Q4. A nozzle of 50mm diameter delivers a stream of water at 20m/s perpendicular to the plate that moves away
from the jet at 5m/s. find:
(i)
The force on the plate (ii) the work done (iii) the efficiency of the jet.
(15)
Section C
Q.5 A jet of water having a velocity of 35m/s impinges on a series of vanes when entering and leaves at an angle
of120. Draw the triangles of velocities at inlet and outlet and find:
(i) The angles at vanes tips so that the water enters and leaves without shock.
(ii) The work done per unit weight of the water entering the vanes and
(iii) The efficiency.
