Technique 58

Positive Framing
Frame your interactions with your students so that they are
reinforcers in the larger picture.
Correct academic performance and behavior, while reminding and
pointing out better courses of actions.

The 6 Rules of Positive Framing


Live in the now

Avoid talking of what students can no longer fix

Talk about what should or must happen next

Describe next move on path to success

Assume the Best


Do not assume the motive as intentional.
It may not be ill intention.
Consider mistake was caused by
confusion, forgetfulness, or simply a sin of
over-enthusiasm.

Allow Plausible Anonymity


Correct without using names do not
name names.

Narrate the Positive and Build


Momentum
Narrate the positives but do not narrate
mediocrity
Motivate the group rather than correct
individuals

Challenge
Students love a challenge!! Challenge
them as individuals and as groups

Talk Expectations and Aspirations


Remind them of the journey toward the
distant and important goal
Connect your framing to that goal

Warm/Strict

Be both warm and strict.


Send a message of high expectations, caring, and respect.

Be warm caring, funny, concerned, and nurturing
Be strict relentless, and sometimes inflexible

Distinguish between behavior
and the person

Lessening the intensity of strong emotion

Emotional Constancy
Manage your emotions
Emotions can affect how
students learn as well as what
students learn
(Bohlin, Durwin, & Reese-Weber, 2012)

Strong negative emotions by teachers


only intensifies students emotions
(Lemov, 2015).

Tips for Maintaining Emotional Constancy


Walk slowly as you approach a situation where you have to
intervene in behavior compose yourself and choose words
carefully.
Criticize behaviors rather than people that behavior was
impolite rather than you are impolite.
Take your relationship out of it frame things impersonally.
Avoid globalizing avoid gotcha statements and words such as
always and never.
