COFFEE, DIABETES AND WEIGHT CONTROL

1. What is the study about?
The study is about coffee, diabetes and weight control and the study take place in
many location, they identified 20 published epidemiologic studies of the association in Dutch,
Finland, USA, Sweden, Japan, Spain, and Denmark. The study is from 2002 2006. The
objective of the study is to find the effect of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee to reduce
the risk of diabetes with the help from weight control. The measurement in this study is using
prospective cohort, meta analysis and cross-sectional study.
2. What are the key findings?

What did the researchers find from this review/study?

The researcher find relevant to the possibility of using coffee or its constituents for

diabetes prevention.

Did the researchers find what they are looking for?

Some research find long term consumption of coffee and decaffeinated coffee can

reduce the risk of diabetes. It seems possible that long-term coffee consumption may have a
weak ability to help persons achieve weight loss, and that this weight loss may contribute
toward reducing the risk of diabetes. Some early evidence exists that decaffeinated coffee,
one or more of the noncaffeine constituents in coffee, or both may be better suited for

enhancing glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity than is caffeinated coffee. More research
is needed to elucidate both the short- and long-term effects of decaffeinated coffee and its
constituents on diabetes risk.
3. Any new information that you learn from this paper?

What do you learn from the finding of the study?

We learn that coffee has an effect to reduce the risk of diabetes and by drinking coffee

it can increase thermogenesis which could lead to significant weight loss. Caffeine in coffee
is the main ingredient that gives coffee the ability to increase thermogenesis, fat oxidation
and lipolysis.
4. Any information that is not in line with what you have learned before?

Do you feel the finding is not in line with your opinion? Please explain!
Information about coffee to reduce the risk of diabetes is correct, we ever heard before

but not too know about it. We know that caffeine has the main effect to stimulate our central
nervous system and many people use coffee to make them awake.
We learn and ever heard if people drink or consume 3-4 caffeinated and decaffeinated
coffee would reduce the risk of developing diabetes type II by 30 percent. Coffee constituents
such as chlorogenic acid and quinides enhance glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity.
5. How can the findings from the study can help Indonesia to improve nutritional status?
Many Indonesian people suffering from diabetes and many people died because of
diabetes. People with diabetes have their own diet and they must restrict their food intake and
also consume diabetic drug to balance glucose level in their body. This study show the effect
of coffee to reduce the risk of diabetes and maybe it can help people in Indonesia to reduce
number of people suffering from diabetes.
Treatment in diabetes are using drug, diet and physical activity. Maybe we can add
consumption of coffee when we educate people with diabetes. We can explain many
advantage and disadvantage of caffeine in coffee and the effect to diabetes. We can combine
the treatment and coffee and we monitor the outcome from this combination.
