Dogan, B., & Almus, K. (2014). School Administrators' Use of iPads: Impact of Training
and Attitudes Toward School Use. Computers in the Schools, 233-247.
INTRODUCTION
Research Questions (if research questions are not specifically mentioned, what is
the theoretical background or overarching theme):
Does training school administrators in the uses of Apple iPad's have an impact on the
attitudes, professional careers, and increased use of this device in the classrooms by
teachers.
Purpose of the research:
To understand the perception of Ipad's in the minds of administrators and understand if it
can be adopted to use both within and outside the teaching enviornment. According to
Dogan and Almus (2014) "It is a study to understand the uses of iPad's by administrators
in there professional duties, and the potential effects on their work-related tastks and
personal organization" (p. 233)
METHODOLOGY
What is the methodology for the research or approach used to understand the
issue? Provide information regarding the following:

Participants:
The pool of participants came from the South Western States hosting one of the
largest charter school franchises. Administrators were chosen from Elementary
and Secondary schools. They were chosen due to being a very large sample
group, yet also because it was a very specific group of administrators.
Procedures:
The adminstartaors were chosen on accounts of them being employed as
administrators and having an iPad provided by the school. It was based upon
voluntary participation. Administrators were contacted by Email through the
school systems central officer. The administrators all filled out a consent form,
then they were notified as to what this experiment was.
Data Collection Methods/Data Source:
The study was made up of a pre-survey, a training session on the use of iPads,
the data was collected in a month, a systematic use of survey's followed after the
training sessions which took into account each administrators teahcing
experience, highest degree, age, years working in administration, school
classification, and school size. These tests were in multiple choice form, and
used likert-type items. Survey's were reported according to the frequency

patterns.
Data Analysis:
The first part of the program, the training system used a feedback response from
administrators to get a grasp of what and how the project advanced. While the
next steps came from the answers to the survey questions. Once again answers
were crosschecked and run through the many details that differentiated the
various adminitstrators (Age, work experience, and so forth).
RESULTS
Findings or Results (or main points of the article):
The resaults were taken apart and placed into five categories: Analysis of demographic
and contextual data; impacts of the traning process on school Administrators; impacts of
the training on the beliefs of administrators and their views towards these products;
differences of final direction taken by princiaples in regards to their demographic and
contextual data; finally the last portion was the evalutation of the training process.
The average age of the school administrators was 34.16 years. The average years of
education was 8 years, while the average years of administratoin was a little over 2
years. All of these administrators used some sort of Windows opperating system, they all
also owned Apple iPads. Though only 52.94% used Apple iPhones, 34% used Android,
1.96% used Blackberry OS, and another 7.84% used other softwares. Administrators
were familiar with the technology before the research.
Administrators viewed the education that could be provided by the iPad was greatly
enhanced by the massive applications being developed for education, communication,
and education while the hardware having touchscreen made it really easy for teachers to
use this new technology without needing any further accesories. It being portable and so
handy in connecting to the internet is also a major bonus as school administrators see
that it can be very easily accessed and used by school principals.
DISCUSSIONS
Conclusions/Implications (for your profession):
I do not object, that the iPad bring a great deal of benefits to the table, yet I hold
serious concerns over it in the social field. The biggest problem is the isolation that
technology brings and the amount of social time it detracts from the social
enviornment of classrooms and workplaces. On top of this we simply today do not
have very advanced and easy to access applications that can help us monitor the
way this technology is being used by the students or other teachers and thus cannot
provide to ourselves what these devices are really being used for. Unless schools
are given the nessesary logistical manpower and techonology to keep this
technology in check these devices will only effect students and administrators in a
negative manner.
REFLECTIONS
Students Reflections (changes to your understanding; implications for your
school/work):
I believe that this is nothing surprising, technology is changing at an unprecented rate
and entering the lives of many people all across the world at just great speed that
schools changing and reforming themselves is natural. Yet the main problem will always
continue to be the monitoring of data and abuse of technology for none-school related
activites. School systems can purchase and use as much technology as they wish, but if
they lack logistics this will in the future cause for economic problems leading to the

disruption of these services. Rather than blindly buying these technologies more
research is nessary on the durablilty, and the rigidness of such techonology on the long
run as well as all the 'practicallity' that they provide to students.
I believe techonology has not reached a level of advancement so that we can easily
monitor all interaction with techonology thus making the internet a dangerous tool for
school grounds, as students may be subject to negative videos and other efficeny
degrading applications such as game apps which make up a large market.
