OBSERVATION CLASS

On Friday 17th, I observed the English I class, conducted by the teacher Paloma Gutierrez. It was a
very pleasant experience, because I could learn a lot about her.
I had the 11:30-12:15 hrs. turn and as I entered, I could see the teacher and the students were
correcting grammar mistakes on the board. She encouraged them to analyse each sentence and give
suggestions about the mistakes; what I noticed was that she gave feedbacks in a nice way, creating a
relaxing environment within the class. After that, they moved onto the next activity, which consisted
on making questions to everyone in the classroom based on the topics the teacher gave them. This
activity involved the participation of the students and the teacher, and put in practice their
communicative competence. I observed the students participated without problems and whenever
they had doubts, they would ask their teacher. After the questions, the students sat down and started
sharing the answers they got from their peers by writing them on the board. I found really
interesting the way she managed the activities, because even though those were communicativeoriented activities, she also encouraged her students to use the language by writing answers on the
board and analysing grammar mistakes. Another remarkable aspect of that class was that every time
they did an activity, the teacher would play music as a mean of extrinsic motivation, so they could
be relaxed. Besides that, I could observe she permanently encouraged them to use English to
communicate with each other, and explained the topics and instructions in a clear way and using her
hands to make easier to understand new words (without using Spanish.).
Lastly, I consider the teacher used the right activities to make her students to get involved with the
class contents. She helped them and corrected their mistakes, making sure they understood what she
said and felt comfortable in class. Furthermore, she conducted activities in which students could

improve their communicative competence and she participated alongside with them; creating a
comforting atmosphere and facilitating the learning process.
