GIANT PANDA

The giant panda is a species of mammal in the order Carnivora and although there is
much controversy about the recent DNA studies encompass what the members of the
bear family (Ursidae), the spectacled bear his relative closest, although this belongs to
the subfamily tremarctinos. On the other hand, the red panda belongs to a family own
independent; Ailuridae. Native to central China, the giant panda lives in mountainous
regions like Sichuan and Tibet, to a height of 3500 meters.

It is endangered; the species is highly localized. 1600 specimens living in the jungles
and 188 in captivity (statistics 2004-2005), reports show that the number of pandas
living in the wild is on the rise.
The panda's main food is bamboo (about 99% of their diet), but also feeds on fruits,
small mammals, fish, and insects.
