Students have previously completed similar work (for example, on Monday they
wrote about their goal for this year, which started off with My goal this year is to
become better at.
Objectives
Through this lesson students practice their creative writing skills which will help them
become more efficient in writing creatively.
Preparation /Resources
Photocopy If I were a tree worksheet

PROCEDURE
Introduction
Students sit on the floor.

10 minutes

Talk about their writing activity:


Explain that they will have to write a story or something related to the picture
on the worksheet and that they will have 15 minutes to complete the work.

And that the story should begin with :If I were a tree I would
Ask students to close their eyes and imagine: what it would feel like to be a
tree; the sun, wind, animals, birds, etc.
Ask students to spend 1 minute thinking about what they would like to write
Students share some of their ideas.
Next they move to their seats and start writing (at this stage start timing the
activity)
Meanwhile students in the Additional Support/EAL program sit on the floor
and I offer them assistance [Help these students to at least write a single
sentence]
Independent Writing
15 minutes
Students work independently.
During this time I will pay extra attention to students who are in Additional
support/EAL
Editing written work
10 minutes
Ask student to edit their work
Say:
o Can you all read your work and make sure that it makes sense.
o Do all your sentences begin with capital letters?
o Did you put full stops at the end of your sentence?
o Underline any words that you find difficult to spell.
Then, tell them that once they complete their writing they can decorate and colourthe
page
I should use this opportunity to visit each table and talk to a few individual
students about their work and help them to spell the difficult words,
assessing them in the process.
Sharing / Closing session
10 minutes
Students sit on the floor.
Next, get a few students to share their work with the rest of the class.
o For example say: . has written a really nice story. ., would you
like to share it with the rest of the class?
o The student stands in front of his/her peers and reads the text.
Ask students to pack up and sit in their seats.

Formative Assessment
This is achieved in a number of ways:
o Observe students writing, spelling and punctuation and take down some
notes.
o Question individual students during the editing stage (regarding grammar,
punctuation and spelling)
o
Extension and Modifications for Particular children
Students weak in writing will receive some assistance on the floor.

While students good in writing are encouraged to write more than 1 page.

Follow Up Lesson/s
A lesson discussing how and why stories or other texts should be written in the
correct sequence of events and ideas (ACELY1671: learning how to plan spoken and
written communications so that listeners and readers might follow the sequence of
ideas or events)
