Lesson Plan Template

Lesson Summary:
Ohio Standards
Connections:
Classify two
dimensional figures
into categories based
on their properties.

During this lesson the students will be classifying quadrilaterals

based upon congruence of sides and angles. We will be building
upon the knowledge of quadrilaterals to classify them properly.
Estimated Duration:
Instruction time will be approximately 40 minutes.

Commentary:
Pre-Assessment:
The pre-assessment data for this lesson has already been collected. It
was a collection of materials about triangles, quadrilaterals, and other
sided shapes. The pre-assessment also covered regular and irregular
shapes, types of angles, and congruence. There were 10 questions on
the assessment.
Scoring Guidelines:
The scoring guidelines for the assessment were based on
whether the student could correctly answer questions before
the lessons. The average score on the pre-assessment was a 3
out of 10.
During this lesson, formative assessments will be completed by the
teacher. I will be questioning the students looking for misconceptions
and assisting where needed. During this lesson I will also be using the
classwork as an assessment to see if the students can apply the
knowledge that we had been covering in class.
Post-Assessment:

Lesson Plan Template

After the lesson I am going to be asking the students to label all of the
quadrilaterals correctly and describe some of their properties. This will
be part of a larger assessment for the geometry unit.
Instructional Procedures:
This lesson will be the application of materials covered in the previous
days class. This will be a math lab in order to better understand the
shapes and classify them.
The first part of the lesson will ask each of the students to take a
collection of shapes and identify them based on their properties. They
will be working as pairs in order to match each of the names of the
shapes, the properties that fit with that shape, and the shape itself.
Once each student completes task 1 and I have signed off on it, they
will be creating their own classification systems in their pairs for the
four-sided shapes. They can use angles, congruence, or any of their
other geometry terms, but the new system must use the geometry
vocabulary.
Once students complete task 2, task 3 is to put the shapes into relation
with all other shapes. This task will ask students to name all of the
shapes and make one giant classification system.
Finally, if the students complete task 3 they will be given time to work
on their homework assignment for the evening with their partner. The
homework will reinforce all that they have worked on in class.
Differentiated Instructional Support
Students will be working in cooperative learning groups for the class
period today. This will allow for scaffolding between the two children
working together. Also, Ms. Castle is going to be in the classroom as
well providing intervention support.
Extension

Lesson Plan Template

This lesson has a built-in extension. As students move through the

tasks each one is more difficult and requires higher-level thinking. If
students do not finish task 3 then they are working at grade level. If
the students complete task 3 then they are working at an advanced
level for 5th grade.
Homework Options and Home Connections
Students will be completing a homework assignment that reinforces
the applications practiced today. Students will be identifying 4-sided
shapes and classifying them by sides and by shapes.
Interdisciplinary Connections
The students will be working on their problem solving skills and
logical thinking which is part of all curriculum. Students will also be
working on sequencing, a language arts standard.
