Research Question: Does immigration contribute negatively or positively to United States?

Working Thesis Statement: Immigration provides beneficial opportunities to not only
immigrants but the United States also
Refined Thesis Statement: Although one may argue that immigration should not be allowed
any longer in America due to negative affects, immigration provides beneficial opportunities to
immigrants and the United States.

The United States Is Already Overpopulated (2009)
This source gives information on immigration and the advantages and disadvantages that
occur with immigrants in the United States. In The United States Is Already Overpopulated, it
argues that immigration is adding to overpopulation in America and explains in how
overpopulation due to immigration is causing negative effects on the environment. It describes
how overpopulation depletes our food supply, our natural resources, and the animals in our
environment. Not only do they support their claim with multiple quotes about the subject, but
also with multiple statistics. Although this article does list some economic advantages due to
immigration, I am using this article to refute my thesis. I am using this to refute my thesis
because this article goes in great detail about how immigration is a huge factor to some of the
issues occurring in United States.
Environmental Impact (2009)
This source focuses on immigration in the United States and how it damages the
environment. In Environmental Impact (2009), it argues that environmental degradation is
increasing due to immigration. This article describes environment degradation factors and
explains the negative effects on the environment as a result of immigration. It goes into detail
about ecological footprints to support their claim. This article provides a graph to let the reader
visualize the negative impact on the environment. This source also supports their claim by
providing information on overpopulation in the United States, which is a major factor in
environmental damage. This article goes in great detail and explains very well about their

reasoning behind their claim: immigration is causing environmental degradation. I am using this
article to refute my thesis.

this article goes in great detail about the economic advantages due to immigration and supports
their evidence with multiple pieces of evidence. They also support their claim by stating the
technological, and educational benefits due to immigration. I am using this article to support my
thesis.
