All About Me Lesson Plan

Mrs. Vasquezs Third Grade Bilingual Class
All About Me- 3rd Grade
In this lesson, I will be reading students a book filled with a few things about myself.
I am doing this in order to introduce myself to the class and to let them know a bit
about myself while improving their literacy skills. In the book, I have included
pictures as well as words that inform readers of places I have traveled, my hobbies,
things I like to do such as fostering animals, and about my siblings. The challenging
vocabulary words I have chosen to teach are siblings, hobbies, travel, and elderly. I
will go into detail when discussing these words to ensure that students fully grasp
and understand their meanings.
Rationale: This activity is an excellent way to introduce myself to a group of
students in an engaging and interesting way that will encourage them to make
connections as well. The follow up activity gives students a chance to inform me of
something about them that they would like me to know while encouraging them to
be creative and draw a picture.
Assessing Prior Knowledge: Before making my book I talked to Mrs. Vasquez
about the vocabulary levels of her class She explained that I would be reading to
two different classes and that one of the classes is at a very low level. She
explained the importance of me giving numerous examples of the words and
pointing to the pictures as I explained.
Lesson Essential Question(s): What makes you unique? How can you use words
to describe your likes and dislikes to others?
3. Standards:

1. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.3.4: Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an

experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking clearly at an
understandable pace.
2. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.4: Determine the meaning of general academic and
domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 3 topic or subject area.
4.

A. Learning Objectives and Assessments:

Learning Objectives
Students will be able to understand
the new words introduced to them
during the reading of my About Me
book.

Students will be able to relate what

they have learned about me to their
own lives and personal experiences.

Assessments
I will assess this by stopping as I
read to ensure that all students
understand each new word as it is
introduced. I will ask them a
question with the vocab word
included to help students make
connections.
I will assess this during a follow-up
discussion in which I will ask
students about their personal

experiences in relation to what was

talked about in my book. (i.e. I will
ask students if they have any
hobbies or siblings)

5.

Materials:
I will need my All About Me book. I will need a follow up activity sheet for each
student.

6. Hook/Lesson Beginning:
To begin the lesson, I will introduce myself and explain that I will be reading a book I
created that will inform them about who I am and what makes me unique. I will call
students over to the rug by asking them if they have a dog. If students raise their
hand they will be asked to come to the rug. I will then ask who does not have a dog.
Those students will then be called to the rug.
7.

Instructional Plan:

I will begin reading the book and explaining the challenging vocabulary words
as they appear on each page.
At certain points in the reading, I will stop and ask students if they have
something in common with me, or if they have a different experience they
would like to share.
After reading the book, I will hold a discussion with students during which
they can ask me questions, make comments, or share their own personal
stories/experiences/favorite things/hobbies.
Following the discussion, I ask students to return to their seats. I will explain
that each student will be receiving an activity sheet on which they can write
something about themselves that they would like to inform me about. I will
ask students to illustrate what they wrote about in the space provided. To
give students ideas, I will write some ideas/options on the board that they
can consider writing about.
After explaining the activity and ensuring that all students understand what is
expected of them, I will hand out the activity sheets.
As students draw and write, I will walk around the room and give support to
those who need ideas or help with spelling.

9. Closure:
I will close the lesson by asking students to share their writing and drawings with
the other members of their groups. This will show them that the things that make
them an individual are valued.

Reflection
I really enjoyed sharing my all about me book with the students. I
learned that as an educator, its really important to teach the students
about myself. I also learned that it is important to plan out what will go
on each page before making the book. One of the pages I made double
sided and the topics were unrelated. This caused me problems when I
was putting the book together. If I had planned out each page and the
writing before I started gluing pictures, this problem could have been
avoided. I also learned that I need to read very slowly and point to the
words as I was explaining them to the students. Some of the students
were calling out when they saw connections between us. I need to
work on my classroom management and be stricter with the students
and calling out. When one student would call out it would cause a
chain reaction and I saw how easy it is to loose control.
The students continued to ask me questions about myself
throughout the day and were making various connections between us.
This showed me how interested the students were in my personal life
and that there are fun and engaging ways to incorporate vocabulary
words. This activity also showed me how some of the bilingual students
really struggle with understanding and writing English. When some
students were doing their activity, they could only write in Spanish.
Mrs. Vasquez was surprised with how little some of the students could
write and actually asked to make a copy of their writing. It was really
interesting to read something the students wanted us to know about

them. There was a huge variety of responses and pictures. The

students were also very excited to hand in their papers and wanted to
know immediately what we thought of their writing.
In the future, I will definitely read an all about me book with
multiple vocabulary words. This was a great way to introduce myself
and allow the students to get to know me on a personal level. I also felt
like this helped the students to connect with me and feel more
comfortable coming to me throughout the day. In the future I definitely
would have differentiated the activity between the two different groups
of students. The second group is at a very low level, and they had
trouble writing something about themselves. I also felt that some of
the vocabulary words were too hard for them, even though they are in
third grade. If I could do it all over again, I would have asked Mrs.
Vasquez specifically words she thought both groups would be able to
understand while still being challenged.
