Thislessonisaboutgivingthestudentsinformationaboutpovertyandhomelessness.Thestudentswillbe
watchingafewshortvideosaboutpovertyandhomelessness.Thenstudentswillbegiventwooutofsix
differentarticlestoreadandpickoutkeyideastosharewiththeotherstudentsattheirtables.
Thislessonwillteachstudentsthedifferentperspectivesofhomelessness.Thereisalsodifferentfactsgivenin
thedifferentarticlessothestudentsareabletogainnewanddifferentknowledgefromeacharticletheyread
andthearticlestheirpeersread.
Theywillusethisinformationtocompareandcontrastthedifferentarticlesandcompareandcontrastthe
articlesfromthevideos.Theywillalsousethisinformationtodecidewhatresourcesintheirlivestheythink
aremostimportantandwhichresourcestheywouldchoosetolivewithout.Thestudentswillseehowpeople
whoarehomelessandlivinginpovertydonthavesomebasicresourcesthathumansneedtolive.Having
enoughresourcestoliveispartofsustainabilityandthatishowthislessonrelatestosustainability.

VennDiagramworksheetsthatcompareandcontrastthearticlesandaseparateVennDiagramthat
comparesandcontraststhearticlestothevideos.
Theinformationfromthislessonwillbeusedintheprojectthestudentswillbecompletingattheendofthe
unit.

Studentswillneedtohaveanideaofwhatpovertyis.Studentswillalsoneedtohavepriorknowledgeonhow

ThefirstthingIwoulddowouldgooverwhatpovertyisandhavestudentsrevisittheirjournals.Iwould
thentellstudentsthatwewillbewatchingafewshortvideosabouthomelessnessandpoverty.Thestudents
needtobewritingkeyfactsandimportantinformationtheylearnedfromthevideos.Afterthevideos
studentswillbegiventwodifferentarticles.Everystudentwillnothavethesametwoarticles.Therearea
totalofsixpossiblearticlesthestudentscouldget.Afterthestudentshavereadboththeirarticlestheywill
sharethemainpointsoftheirarticleswithothersattheirtable.Theywillhavewrittendowntheirmain
pointsintheirjournalandthentheywillalsowritethemainpointsoftheotherarticlessharedattheirtables.
Thestudentswillthencompareandcontrastthearticlesandvideos.Thestudentswillthensharehowthey
thinkpeopleinpovertychoosetohavecertainresourcesandchoosetonothavecertainresources.Ask
studentswhatresourcestheywouldwanttokeepandwhatresourcestheywouldgiveup.

WAYSOFTHINKINGCONNECTION
The type of thinking that most connects to this lesson plan is systems thinking. This type of thinking is connected to
this lesson, because it is all about connecting different ideas to each other. Each article talks about poverty and
homelessness differently. Poverty happens for so many different reasons and it is important to be aware that there is
not one reason people are living in poverty and/or are homeless. Values Thinking is also involved in this lesson,
because people value different things and take things in their life for granted and I think this lesson will help put
things into perspective for the students.
