Topic: Technology vs. wellbeing
Inquiry: How does advanced technology correlate to poor health?
Thesis: Certain advancements in technology are leading to unhealthy behaviors and poor
lifestyle choices.
Joan S. Ash, M. B. (2004, March 1). Some Unintended Consequences of Information Technology
in Health Care: The Nature of Patient Care Information System-related Errors.
In this article the authors make points on how information technology can lead to
malfunctions with health and possibly death. These deaths are due to errors in the patient
care information systems (PCISs). The article states; The errors fall into two main
categories: those in the process of entering and retrieving information, and those in the
communication and coordination process that the PCIS is supposed to support. Basically
the article states that many deaths occur each year due to what is referred to as silent
errors. I would say that this is ironic because this system was created for prevention
through information but yet it is causing misinformation leading to more treatment. The
article also predicts some 98,000 deaths in the U.S from these silent errors.
Rosen, L. D., Lim, A. F., Felt, J., Carrier, L. M., Cheever, N. A., Lara-Ruiz, J. M., Mendoza, J.
S., ... Rokkum, J. (June 01, 2014). Media and technology use predicts ill-being among
children, preteens and teenagers independent of the negative health impacts of exercise
and eating habits. Computers in Human Behavior, 35, 364-375.

Research shows that children, preteens, and teenagers are using massive amounts of
media and those with more screen time have been shown to have increased obesity,
reduced physical activity, and decreased health. This statement, although a bit broad,
doesnt come as a shock to me. Technology is essential to todays society. Without
technology I wouldnt be able to pass any of my courses. However, I think there should
be a delicate balance between technology and exercise. This article stated that: Practical
implications were discussed in terms of setting limits and boundaries on technology use
and encouraging healthy eating and physical activity at home and at school. I tend to
agree with these implications, there needs to be a healthy balance between media
consumption and physical activity/healthy eating.
Weber, S. (January 01, 2005). Addressing technology pros and cons. Journal of the American
Academy of Nurse Practitioners, 17, 11.)
This article is a synopsis of pros and cons of technology on adolescents in the
classroom and at home. The article mentions that long term exposure
to a computer screen can be very bad for your health. Increasing risk for
obesity, repetitive strain injuries, stunted social development, and clinical depression.
These are all possible negative effects of being in front of a screen for too long. A
question that the author, Scott Weber proposed in this article is; How does the assistive
technology help the student to learn important skills and also maintain good health and
functionality so as to catch up with classroom peers?
Punamaki, R. L., Wallenius, M., Nygard, C.-H., Saarni, L., & Rimpela, A. (August 01, 2007).
Use of information and communication technology (ICT) and perceived health in
adolescence: The role of sleeping habits and waking-time tiredness. Journal of
Adolescence, 30, 4, 569-585.

This article compares the extensive usage of videogames by teen boys and the amount of
sleep they get. They found that extensive video gaming led to increased waking-time
tiredness. By my own personal experiences I can say that this is surely true. This over
usage of video games can definitely lead to being strung out the next day. Some girls
however suffer from a different form of exhaustion; Girls were vulnerable to the
negative consequences of intensive mobile phone usage, as it associated with perceived
health complaints and musculoskeletal symptoms both directly and through deteriorated
sleep and increased waking-time tiredness. This article revolves around ICT usage or
information and communication technology. The article states facts found through
scientific testing. But it also states that we dont know all of the effects of ICT among our
generations growth.
von, B. J. (January 01, 2010). Food insecurity, hunger and malnutrition: necessary policy and
technology changes. New Biotechnology, 27, 5, 449-52.
Although technology can cause many unhealthy habits and damage ones health, there are
places throughout the world where the proper technology is absent. This article touches
base on food deserts and insecurities. Food insecurity is when a person cant be sure of
when their next meal is to come. The article goes into depth about this global crisis of
malnutrition and proposes some solutions. The article states: At the global level, a
science and technology initiative is needed to respond to risks such as rising food prices,
economic recession, increased competition for natural resources and climate change. I
think that this is one way that technology can be used for good.
