Todays Objective
IWBAT explain in writing how the balance of power
between slave and free states changed after the
Compromise of 1850 by completing a map and guiding
questions.
HOW Well Do This:
1. Notes: the Compromise of 1850
2. Short video explanation
3. Label and color a map of the Compromise of 1850 to see

it visually

4. Use that map to answer a set of analysis questions

What Was the Compromise of 1850?

The compromise of 1850 was an
AGREEMENT between southerners and
Northerners about SLAVERY in
CALIFORNIA that resulted in the
FUGITIVE SLAVE LAW.

What Problems Did the US Face in the 1840s?

After the MISSOURI
COMPROMISE in 1820,
political disagreements over
SLAVERY seemed to go away.
But with the MEXICANAMERICAN WAR in 1846,
new problems arose. Should
the new territories allow
slavery or not?
Problems came again when
CALIFORNIA wanted to join
the Union as a free state in
1850. Southerners and
Northerners argued back and
forth.

What Was the Wilmot Proviso?

One solution was the WILMOT PROVISO, a
proposed law that would outlaw slavery in any new
territory. SOUTHERNERS hated this idea, and
refused to pass the new law, saying that it was
UNCONSTITUTIONAL. It didnt pass

What Did the Compromise of 1850 Decide?

Finally, Senator HENRY CLAY created a

compromise:
To please NORTHERNERS, CA gets to be a
free state
To please SOUTHERNERS, Congress would
pass a stricter law called the FUGITIVE
SLAVE LAW to help slave owners get their
RUNAWAY SLAVES back.

How Effective Was the Compromise of 1850?

It SOLVED the issue of California, but this

compromise didnt really fix the bigger problem
how would NEW TERRITORIES be added to
the Union in the West?

textbook)
Write the TITLE: The Compromise of 1850 at the TOP of
your map
LABEL the states shown on the map (abbreviations are fine)
Use a different COLOR for each of the following (put the color
next to the category)
Free States (including California)
Free territories
Slave States
Slave territories
Territory OPENED to slavery by the compromise

2. Use your map to answer the analysis questions in the booklet

Processing Question (Honors Only)

Beneath your activator, respond to the following:

In the Fugitive Slave Act video clip we watched earlier in class,
the narrator said that passage of the law proved that the Union [the
states being united] was more important than ending slavery.
Yesterday in Baltimore, after a few days of peaceful protest
over the death of a 25 year-old black man named Freddie Gray, riots
broke out all over the city. Many have condemned the riots for their
deliberate targeting of law enforcement officers and looting of local
businesses.
What do you think should be valued morepublic safety (of
the many), or advocating for the limited rights of the few? Explain
your answer.

The So What? Of This Lesson

For the next 3 days, well be focusing on the question Did
compromises over slavery in the West HELP or HURT relations
between North and South?
Are there issues today that seem impossible to solve? (and yet we
keep trying anyway)
Race

Poverty
Religious differences (i.e., in relation to same-sex marriage,
abortion, etc.)
Immigration
What could ultimately happen if those types of issues cannot be
solved?
