Task 7: Le Corbusier and his theories about modern housing

What is the main problem Le Corbusier has encountered when introducing

mass-produced housing?
As a theorist, all theories has to start from scratch. At the time the idea of mass production
did not exist and as a result it was an unusual idea to be accepted by ordinary people
and the architects of his time. Looking at todays designs, it is obvious to see that Le

How does le Corbusier want to replace natural/ traditional materials in architecture?

Have a look at le Corbusiers plan for a University Quarter. What do you think
about his approach?
Le Corbusier was not only an ordinary architect, he was an economist too but with an
architects vision. His approach for a university quarter is to provide privacy, personal
space and self contaminant environment for the student. This will enhance the overall
performance of each student individually in terms of academic studies and deliver a
land mark design with efficiency in cost.
Todays university accommodations are the best example of his approach.

Le Corbusier want to replace natural/ traditional materials in architecture with modern Le Corbusier identifies Architectural Schools as collaborators in the process of
man-made materials in order to achieve the main goal of his theory Mass Production creating a new architecture. Do you think that role has been/ can be achieved?

The true nature of architecture, is to evolve over times. The process of the evolution (by
waste generating and unsustainable by todays language in architecture. He proposed the

Do you agree with the statement: A house will no longer be this solidity-built

which wealth can be shown; it will be a tool as the motor-car is becoming a tool
Some of Le Corbusiers Designs
The phrase (A house will no longer be this solidity-built thing) is not always the standard
in architecture. The geography, topography and terrain of the location of the intended
house, defines the fact the solidity of the design.
In general the idea of abolishing the solidity of a house is more practical by many means
such as minimizing cost, speeding the process of construction to shorten the schedules
and provide a more sustainable building.
What is the Maison Citrohan?
The Maison Citrohan is a house designed by Le Corbusier in 1920 to bring his theory of
Mass Production Houses and the phrase (A house is a machine for living in) to provide
the basic needs and efficiant for speed and accuracy.
