I.IntroductionandBackground
Ourprogramwillfocusonreducingtheproportionofcollegefemaleswhoreportan
unintendedpregnancywithinthelast12months.ThisissuewasaddressedintheHealthyCampus2020
report,whichindicatesthatthisisaproblemwithinthistargetpopulationandneedstobeimproved.Our
programwillimplementabehavioralchangewithinthecollegestudentpopulation,inordertoreduce
theseratesofunintendedpregnancy.Throughthis,wewillimplementaprogramtoincreaseconsistent
condomuse.
TheepidemiologicresearchcompletedonunintendedpregnancyrateswithintheUnitedStates
provesthat51%ofpregnanciesintheUnitedStatesareunintended,whichresultsin6.6million
unintendedpregnancieseachyear(GuttmacherInstitute,2013).Theproportionofunintended
pregnanciesintheUnitedStatesishigherthantheproportionofunintendedpregnanciesinother
industrializedcountries(Gardiner,2010).Studiesindicatethatthehighratesofunintendedpregnancy
directlycorrelatewithfrequencyofsexualactivityandinconsistencyincontraceptionuse.TheNational
InstituteofHealthreportsthat80%ofcollegefemalesaresexuallyactive(GuttmacherInstitute,2013).
Ofthat80%,65%ofsexuallyactivefemalesconsistentlyusecontraception(GuttmacherInstitute,
2013).Therefore,thefemaleswhoaresexuallyactiveandconsistentlyusecontraceptiononlyaccount
for5%oftheunintendedpregnancieseachyear(GuttmacherInstitute,2013).Althoughthemajorityof
collegeagedstudentsareusingprotectionduringsexualintercourse,thispopulationisexperiencinga
riseinunintendedpregnancyrates.AccordingtotheCentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention
(2013),theproportionofpregnanciesthatwereunintendedincreasedto83%amongfemalesbetween18
to19yearsold,andincreasedto64%amongwomenbetween20to24yearsold(CentersforDisease
ControlandPrevention,2013).Studiesindicatethatinconsistencyincondomuseamongcollege
femalesis19%,whichaccountsfor43%ofunintendedpregnancies(GuttmacherInstitute,2013).The
remaining16%ofsexuallyactivecollegefemales,whodonotpracticeanyformofcontraceptionuse,
accountfor52%oftheunintendedpregnanciesintheUnitedStateseachyear(GuttmacherInstitute,
2013).Thesestatisticsprovethatalthoughtherearecollegestudentswhousecontraception,thereisstill
ahighpercentageofstudentswhoaresexuallyactiveanddonotusecontraception.Therefore,thishas
becomeasignificantproblemforcollegestudentsinparticular.
Theincidencerate,orrateofnewcases,showsanincreaseinunintendedpregnanciesto51%in
2008(GuttmacherInstitute,2013).Unfortunately,therateofunintendedpregnanciesamongwomen

belowthepovertylinehasincreasedto56%since1994,anditaffects137ofthe1,000womeninthe
UnitedStates(GuttmacherInstitute,2013).Therefore,theincidenceofunintendedpregnancyis
consistentlyrising.Thishaspartlytodowiththewidevarietyofpopulationsthatareaffectedby
unintendedpregnancy.
Anyonewhoisabletobecomepregnantcanbeaffectedbyunintendedpregnancy,even
individualswhousecontraception.Thisisduetothepossibilitythatcontraceptionisnotusedortaken
properly.However,therearecertaindemographicpopulationsthataremoreatriskthanothers.For
example,studiesindicatethatlargeincreasesinunintendedpregnancyrateswerefoundamongwomen
withlowereducationlevelsandlowsocioeconomicstatus(CentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention,
2013).Lowereducationlevelsarethoughttoheavilycorrelatewithratesofunintendedpregnancydueto
peoplehavinglessknowledgeaboutsafesexandpreventivemeasures.Inaddition,alowsocioeconomic
statuscontributestoanincreaseinunintendedpregnancies.Researchindicatesthat82%ofurbanpoor
womeninvolvedinastudydidnotplantheirpregnancy,and83%ofthesewomendidnothave
insuranceorreliedsolelyonMedicaid(Besculides&Laraque,2004).Peopleoflowsocioeconomic
statusaremorepronetounintendedpregnancyduetotheinabilitytopayforhealthinsurance,
contraception,orotherpreventivemeasures.
Althoughstudiesindicateloweducationlevelsandsocioeconomicstatusaremajorfactorsin
unintendedpregnancy,demographicfactorsincludingage,race,andethnicitycanalsoaffectapersons
susceptibility.Currently,theproportionofpregnanciesthatareunintendeddecreasesasageincreases
(GuttmacherInstitute,2013).Thehighestrateofunintendedpregnancywithintheagedemographicis
femalesbetween20to24yearsold(GuttmacherInstitute,2013).Thisagegroupistypicallycollege
students,whichisourtargetpopulationforthisprogram.Whenevaluatingraceorethnicity,22%non
Hispanicblackfemales,17%ofHispanicfemalesand11%ofnonHispanicwhitefemalesexperience
unintendedpregnancy(CentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention,2013).Thisindicatesthatnon
Hispanicblackfemalesaremostlikely,Hispanicssecondmostlikely,andnonHispanicwhitefemales
areleastlikelytogetunintentionallypregnant.
Therearecausativefactorsthatalsoinfluenceonesriskofunintendedpregnancy.Themost
commoncharacteristicsthatmayincreaseonesriskofunintendedpregnancyarelowselfesteem,
sexualactivity,andalcoholanddruguse.Peoplewhohavelowselfesteemareoftenvulnerableand
easilyinfluencedbyothersdecisions.Therefore,someonewholacksselfconfidencehasagreater
chanceofbeingpressuredintohavingsex.Inaddition,alcoholanddrugusecontributesignificantlyto
theriskofunintendedpregnancy.Alcoholanddruguseinhibitsdecisionmakingabilities,whichhasa

pooreffectonanindividualsjudgment.Studiesshowthatpeoplewhoareintoxicatedaremorewilling
toengageinsexwithoutacondom(Abbey,Parkhill,JacquesTiura,&Saenz,2009).Thus,peopleare
morelikelytomakeunhealthysexualactivitydecisionswhileintoxicated,duetotheiralteredjudgment.
Thelastmajorcausativefactorisfrequencyofsexualactivity.Thisisamajorfactorbecausetheearlier
anindividualchoosestoparticipateinsexualactivity,themorelikelytheyaretoengageinrisky
behaviors,suchashavingsexwithmultiplepartnersornotconsistentlyusingproperprotection.The
earliersomeonebecomessexuallyactive,thelongertheyareexposedtotherisksofsexualactivity
(Winters,Botzet,Fahnhorst,Baumel,&Lee,2009).Luckily,therearemultiplewaysinwhichthese
causativefactorscanbeprevented.
Thebestwaypeoplecanpreventunintendedpregnancyistousecontraceptionproperlyduring
everysexualencounter.Ourprogramisspecificallypromotingcondomuse.Itispossiblethatmaking
condomusemoresociallyacceptablecanpreventunintendedpregnancies.Ifpeoplebegintocreatean
environmentwherecondomuseisopenlydiscussed,accessible,andusedmorethatcouldalterthe
hesitancepeoplecurrentlyhaveaboutcondoms.Asitwasstatedbefore,peoplewhoareuneducatedare
morelikelytohaveanunintendedpregnancy.Therefore,increasingknowledgenationwidethroughout
schoolsystemscanalsopreventunintendedpregnancy.Sincepeopleareengaginginsexualintercourse
atyoungerages,studentsmustbeeducatednotonlyaboutthebenefitsofcondomuse,butalsotherisk
ofnotusingthem.Knowledgeispowerandbyobtainingthisinformation,studentscanbewellequipped
totaketheproperstepstowardsafersexandpreventingunintendedpregnancies.Anothermajorwayin
whichunintendedpregnancycanbepreventedisbymakingcontraceptivesmoreaccessibleand
affordable.Aswepreviouslymentioned,peopleoflowsocioeconomicstatusaremoreatriskfor
unintendedpregnancy;so,condomswouldbemoreaccessibletothegeneralpopulationinorderto
lowertheirrisk.Althoughtherearemanypreventivebehaviorsonecantakeinordertoprotectthem,
therearemanyinfluencesonanindividual'sbehaviorsthatincreasetheirlikelihoodofunintended
pregnancy.
Thereareseveralinfluencesthatimpactwhetheranindividualchoosestouseprotectionduring
sexualintercourse.Themostcommonbarrierstocondomuseincludelossofsensationduetocondoms,
feelingembarrassedaboutbuyingcondoms,orpeerpressure.Malesoftenreportexperiencingalossof
sensationwhenengaginginsexualintercoursewithacondomon.Thiscreatesabarrierandcauses
malestofeelasthoughsexualintercourseislesspleasurablewhenwearingacondom.Therefore,males
maybelesslikelytodecidetouseacondomduringsex.Inaddition,itiscommonforpeopletofeel
embarrassedaboutpurchasingcondomsinpublic.Thisbeliefresultsinafrequentdecreaseincondom

use(Small,Weinman,Buzi,&Smith,2009).Theembarrassmentisduetothepossibilityofseeing
someonetheyknowwhilebuyingthecondomsandthefearofsomeonejudgingthem.Anothercommon
barriertocondomuseduringsexualintercourseispeerpressure.Peerpressurecanbeanissuein
friendshipsorrelationships.Someonemaybepressuredbytheirsignificantothertodisregardcondom
use.Sexualintercoursecreatesafeelingofvulnerability,whichallowsanindividualtogiveintopeer
pressuremoreeasily.Couplesmaystopregularcondomusebecausetheyfeelthatiftheyareina
committedrelationship,theycandisregardtheirriskofunintendedpregnancy(Certain,Harahan,
Saewyc,&Fleming,2009).Therefore,peopleareofteneasilyinfluencedbypeerpressurebecauseof
theirdesiretopleasetheirpartner.
Unintendedpregnancycangreatlyimpactbothindividualsandcommunitiesasawhole.
Individualswhoarefacedwithunintendedpregnancymayexperienceadditionalstress,analteredlife
course,andstrainedrelationshipswiththeirspouseandfamily.Thecostofhavingandraisingababyis
ahugefinancialburdenforanyone,butevenmoresoforcollegestudents.Parentsofindividualswho
becomeunintentionallypregnantmayshowsignsofdisappointment,whichcancausestrainonthe
familysrelationship.Womenwhoareunintentionallypregnantmayalsohaveastrainedrelationship
withtheirspouseduetotheseriousnessofthesituation.Alloftheseindividualeffectscancausethe
womantoexperienceadditionalunnecessarystress.
Thecommunityanindividualbelongstoisalsoaffectedbyunintendedpregnancy.Womenof
lowsocioeconomicstatusaremorelikelytogothroughwiththebirthoftheirbaby,ratherthangetan
abortion(GuttmacherInstitute,2013).Therefore,thesewomenareofteneligibleforMedicaid,food
stamps,andwelfare.Thecommunityfundstheseprogramsthroughtaxes,butanincreasedrateof
unintendedpregnanciescanbeextremelycostly.Thetotalpublicexpensesforunintendedpregnancy
birthsnationwidewereestimatedtobe$12.5billionin2008(GuttmacherInstitute,2013).This
demonstratesthatthehiddeneffectsofunintentionalpregnanciescanburdenthecommunitywith
additionalfinancialresponsibilities.
Aswithallhealthissues,therearenumerouspossiblecausesofunintendedpregnancies.A
majorcauseofunintendedpregnanciesisinconsistencyincondomuse.Researchindicatesthat80%of
collegefemalesaresexuallyactive.Ofthat80%,only65%consistentlyusecontraception(Guttmacher
Institute,2013).Inconsistentcondomusecanbeattributedtocollegestudentslowperceived
susceptibilityofbecomingunintentionallypregnant.Seventyonepercentofourfocusgroup
participantsknowsomeonewhohasbeenaffectedbyunintendedpregnancy,yetstudentsstilladmitto
inconsistentcondomuse(Cihlar,DeWeese,Payson,&Trezak,2014).Sixtypercentofcollegewomen

admittheywouldstillengageinsexualintercourseiftheirpartnerrefusedtowearacondom,which
indicatesthatstudentsperceivetheirsusceptibilityislow.Therelationshipstatusofacollegestudent
canalsobeconsideredapossiblecauseofunintendedpregnancies.Oldercollegestudentsusecondoms
lessthanyoungercollegestudents;and,thismaybeduetothefactthatoldercollegestudentsaremore
likelytobeincommittedrelationshipsthanyoungercollegestudents(Certain,Harahan,Saewyc,&
Fleming,2009).Typicallywheninacommittedrelationship,bothpartnerstrusttheirpartnerandwill
optoutofusingcondoms,soitisamorepleasurableexperience.
Ourprogramwillfocusonpreventivemeasuresforunintendedpregnancies,suchasthebenefits
ofconsistentcondomusewhenengaginginsexualintercourse,increasingawarenessofsusceptibility,
easieraccesstocondoms,andmakingcondomuseasocialnorm.Womenwhopracticeconsistent
condomuseonlyaccountfor5%ofunintendedpregnancieseachyear(GuttmacherInstitute,2013).
Yet,the16%ofsexuallyactivewomenwhodonotpracticeanycontraceptionuseareresponsiblefor
52%oftheunintendedpregnanciesintheUnitedStateseachyear(GuttmacherInstitute,2013).If
collegestudentswereawareoftheiractualsusceptibilityofunintendedpregnancies,theywouldbemore
likelytopracticeconsistentcondomuse.OurprogramwillalsofocusoneducatingBallState
UniversitystudentsabouttheeasyaccessibleandfreecondomsattheHealthCenter.Lastly,wewill
focusonmakingcondomusemoreacceptableinourtargetpopulation,inordertominimize
unintentionalpregnancies.Bybreakingthenegativesocialstigmaassociatedwithcondoms,wewill
successfullypromotesafesex.Manypeopleviewsexasataboosubjectandareunlikelytoask
questionsregardingtheirsexualhealth;however,bymakingcondomusemoreacceptableinthecollege
atmosphere,ourprogramwillpotentiallydecreasethenumberofunintendedpregnanciesatBallState
University.
Asourprogramevaluatedtheprevalenceandincidenceofunintendedpregnancies,wealso
explorewhoisprimarilyaffectedinspecificdemographicssuchasage,sex,raceorethnicity,economic
situation,educationallevel,andlocationofresidence.Otherfactorsourprogramassessedwere
causativeandpreventivebehaviorsofunintendedpregnancy,influencesonthebehavior,theeffects
unintendedpregnancyhasonindividualsandcommunities,possiblecausesandpreventivemeasures,as
wellaspossiblesolutionstoreducingunintendedpregnancy.Afterconductinganindepthanalysisover
unintendedpregnancyinvariouspopulations,ourprogramchosetospecificallytargetcollegestudents
whoattendBallStateUniversity.

II.TargetAudience
Our primary target audience includes all Ball State University students. Condom use is relevant
to all students who attend Ball State because every student will be faced with the opportunity to
experience sexual encounters at some point in their lifetime. These sexual encounters could lead to
unintended pregnancies no matter what age, gender, or ethnicity.
Most college students range from ages 18- 23 and these are the age groups that our program will
focus on. This age group is very important to target about condom use because sexual activity is very
common during this time in others life. Since it is so common for college students at this age to have
sexual intercourse, it is for them to understand the importance of using a condom. If these students are
not using a condom and have multiple sexual partners, this could lead to an unintended pregnancy or
other negative consequences that college students arent prepare for.
Both men and women bear equal responsibility in the act of using a condom, which is why our
program will target both sexes. Many may feel as though it is only the males responsibility to carry a
condom, as we found out during our focus group (Cihlar, DeWeese, Payson, & Trezak, 2014). However,
it should be both genders responsibility to have a condom with them during sexual intercourse. Both
genders should always have a condom with them in order to be properly prepared, because they never
know if they will need to use it or not. Therefore, it is important for us to target males because they are
the ones that have to wear the condom during sex. It is also important for the female, even though they
arent the ones having to wear the condom, because a male could forget to a condom or the condom
could break. Therefore, it is important for females to have a condom with them at all times as a backup
plan.
Our program specifically chose Ball State University students, because the leaders of our
program are very familiar with Ball State since thats where they also attend. Because our leaders attend
the same school as the target population, then it is easy for them to understand how to best reach the
audience to get our message across to as many students as possible. Our leaders also know the behaviors
of the college students because they have gone to school with many of them. Our leaders will be able to
relate to the students and have a better understanding of the sexual situations they are facing. By relating
to the audience, it will help the audience understand the importance of using a condom.
It is also important to target every student even if they are not sexually active. If a student is not
sexually active, they will eventually become sexually active and it is just as important for these students
to know the importance of condom use when this time comes. This is also important because those

students who have sex and those who dont still mingle and interact with one another. This could be
important because they can all learn from one another on the importance of using a condom. By
thoroughly understanding our target audience, our program will be able to better accommodate their
needs in order to fulfill the goals and objectives.

III.GoalsandObjectives

EvaluatingtheoverallsexualhealthofBallStatestudents,ourgroupdecidedtofocuson

implementingabehaviorchange.Forstudents,collegeisatimetoindependentlydiscoverthemselvesas
youngadultsinordertopursueasuccessfulandstablecareer.Thistimeofindependenceoffersmany
opportunitiesthatthetargetpopulationcantaketoachievetheirambitions.However,withthisnew
independencecomestheresponsibilitytomakepositivechoices.Someofthesechoicesareweighted
morethanothersandcouldprovetobedevastatingtostudentsdevelopment.Withtheoverallincreased

sexualactivityamongcollegestudents,ourprogramhasdecidedtomakeitourdutytoensurethat
studentsaretakingtherightstridesinpracticingsafesexandpreventingunintendedpregnancies.An
unintendedpregnancycanalterthelifecourseofmaleandfemalestudentsandpotentiallykeepthem
frompursuingtheirprofessionalandpersonalgoals.
Uponimplementingourprogram,wehaveorganizedaseriesofobjectivesthatwillaidusin
achievingtheprimarygoalofourcampaign.Theprimarygoalistodecreasetheproportionoffemale
BallStateUniversitystudentswhoreportanunintendedpregnancyinthelasttwelvemonths.Wehave
decidedtopromoteourprogramthroughoutcampus,whilefocusingoureffortsinhightrafficareas.We
intendtodistributeavarietyofflyersandposterstopromoteprogramevents.Areasourprogramwill
emphasizearestudentknowledgeinthefrequencyandrisksofunintendedpregnancy,studentbeliefs
aboutunintendedpregnancy,andusethesecomponentstochangethepotentiallydetrimentalbehaviors
ofthestudentpopulation.
Morespecifically,weintendtoaccomplishtheseobjectivesbycertainnumericalincrements,
whichwebelieveareobtainableandwillbenefittheBallStateStudentpopulation:

ByMay2016,therewillbea40%increaseinthenumberofBallStatestudentswhousea

condomeverytimetheyhavesex.
ByMay2016,thenumberofBallStatestudentswhoreportconsistentlycarryingacondomwill

increaseby40%.
ByMay2016,therewillbea25%increaseinthenumberofBallStatestudentswhoknowhow

prevalentunintendedpregnanciesareamongcollegestudents.
ByMay2016,therewillbea25%increaseinthenumberoffemaleBallStatestudentswhofeel
responsibleforprovidingacondomduringsexualintercourse.

Byworkingtowardstheseobjectives,webelievewecanchangethewaycollegestudentsview
condomuseduringsexualactivity.Bychangingthemindsetofthesestudents,studentswillbetter
recognizetheirsexualhealthandtherisksthatcouldharmtheirfuture.Therefore,wecanhelpsave
manystudentsfromreportinganunplannedpregnancy.Furthermore,wecanbettertheBallState
communityandmakeanimpactonthesestudentslivesforyearstocome.

OurfirstfocusgroupwasconductedonSunday,September28th,2014inBrackenLibraryatBall
StateUniversity.Wehadatotalof14participants,fourmaleand10females.Ourparticipantsranged
inagefrom18yearsoldto22yearsold,andtheyallattendBallStateUniversity.Ourfocusgroup
discoveredthatseventyninepercentoftheparticipantsaresexuallyactive,whichindicatesthehigh
proportionofstudentswhocouldpotentiallyfaceanunintendedpregnancy(Cihlar,DeWeese,Payson,
&Trezak,2014).Onehundredpercentofourparticipantsadmittoknowingsomeonewhohas
experiencedapregnancyscare;yet,43%ofparticipantshaveengagedinsexualintercoursewithouta
condom(Cihlar,DeWeese,Payson,&Trezak,2014).Thisindicatesourprogramcouldgreatly
influencestudentsdecisionstoparticipateinsafesex,ifmarketedandimplementedcorrectly.
Ourprogramgainedvaluableinformationfromourfocusgroupparticipants.Welearnedthat
collegestudentsareawareofthewaystopreventpregnancyandavoidsexuallytransmitteddiseases.
Ninetythreepercentofparticipantsbelievecondomsareeffectiveinpreventingpregnancy(Cihlar,
DeWeese,Payson,&Trezak,2014).Onehundredpercentofthemalefocusgroupparticipantsare
confidentintheirabilitytoproperlyuseacondom,whileonly70%offemalefocusgroupparticipants
areconfidentintheirability(Cihlar,DeWeese,Payson,&Trezak,2014).Thisledustobelievethat
lackofknowledgeoncondomuseisnotthebiggestbarrierforcollegestudents;instead,theirlackof
perceivedsusceptibilityisthemostsignificantbarrierwithinthistargetpopulation.
Collegestudentsperceivesexualactivitytobesociallyacceptableinthecollegeatmosphereand
studentswiththissenseofperceptionmaybemorelikelytoengageinunhealthysexualbehaviors,

includingunprotectedsex.Seventyonepercentofparticipantsknowsomeonewhohasbeenaffectedby
unintendedpregnancy,butstudentsarestillnotconsistentlyusingcondomsduringsexualintercourse
(Cihlar,DeWeese,Payson,&Trezak,2014).Collegestudentsbelievetheyareinvulnerableinmany
instancesbecauseoftheirlowperceivedsusceptibility.Collegestudentsdonotthinktheycouldbecome
astatisticofunintendedpregnanciesandtheiroveralllackofcondomuseillustratesthat.Ifcollege
studentswereworriedaboutbecomingunintentionallypregnant,thenalargerpercentagewouldonly
engageinsexualintercoursewhenusingacondom;unfortunately,only36%offocusgroupparticipants
reportedtheywouldrefusetohavesexwithsomeonewhoisnotpreparedtouseacondom(Cihlar,
DeWeese,Payson,&Trezak,2014).
Weusedthisvaluableinformationthatwelearnedaboutourtargetpopulationwhenplanningthe
marketingtechniques.Ourfocusistoincreasestudentsperceivedsusceptibility.Inordertodothis,our
programwillairacommercialdepictingayoungfemalecollegestudentwhothinksthereisachanceshe
ispregnant.AttheendofourcommercialthephraseProtectyourself,willflashacrossthescreento
remindviewerstouseacondomwhenengaginginsexualintercourseinordertoavoidunintentional
pregnancies.Sincethemajorityofcollegestudentsdonotbelievetheycouldbeaffectedbyan
unintendedpregnancy,usingsomeonewhocouldbetheirpeerinourcommercialwillshowitcan
happentoanyone.
SincealargeproportionofBallStatestudentsaresexuallyactive,ourprogrammustfocuson
increasingawarenessofthepotentialconsequencesofengaginginunprotectedsex.Oursecondfocus
group,conductedonNovember9th,2014,informedusonstudentspreferredmethodofobtaining
information.Collegestudentsprefertoobtaintheirinformationabouteventsthroughdifferentformsof
socialmedia,includingFacebook,Twitter,andInstagram(Cihlar,DeWeese,Payson,&Trezak,2014).
Programplannerstookthisinformationintoaccountwhendecidingonwhichcommunicationchannels
toemploy.
WedecidedtouseFacebookandTwitterasourmainformsofsocialmediacommunication,in
ordertodisseminateinformationtoourtargetpopulation.Welearnedthatcollegestudentsbelieve
TwittertobethemosttrustworthyandreliableformofsocialmediawhencomparedtoFacebookand
Instagram(Cihlar,DeWeese,Payson,&Trezak,2014).Ourfocusgroupinformedprogramplannersthat
havingsomeonewhohaspersonallyexperiencedunintendedpregnancyasacollegestudentwouldbe
themostcredibleandintriguingspokespersonintheireyes.Thisindicatesthatstudentsprefersomeone
whoisrelatableandexperiencedinunintendedpregnancytodiscussthepreventioninsteadofsomeone

whoismoreprestigiousandeducated,suchasadoctororprofessor.Afterlearningthisvaluable
information,ourprogramwasmorepreparedtodisseminateourmessagetoourtargetpopulation.

V.Messages

Objective:ByMay2016,therewillbea40%increaseinthenumberofBallStatestudentswhousea
condomeverytimetheyhavesex.
Thisisthefirstmessageofourcampaignbecausewebelievethatitbestdefinesthegoalofour
program.Protectyourselfexplainstoourtargetaudiencethatyoushouldwearcondomsduringevery
sexualencounterinordertoavoidunintendedpregnancy.Inaddition,itintriguesthetargetpopulation,
duetothealluringandboldstatement.ThismessagewouldbeusedduringSeptember2015because
studentsaresettlinginforanewschoolyear.Showingourcommercialontelevisionsthroughout
campusinNovemberwillemphasizethismessage.Ourprogramwillpromotethismessagebyshowing
aPSAtoourtargetaudience.ThisPSAwillshowacollegestudentwhofindsoutsheisunexpectedly
pregnant.AttheendofthePSA,thewordsProtectyourselfwillshow.Thiswilldiscouragestudents
fromputtingthemselvesinhersituationandencouragethemtousecondomsduringsexualactivity.
Thenextmessage,Continuingyoureducationandgoalsasplanned,isanimportantmessage
becauseitrelatestothetopicofriskingonesaspirationsduetoanunintendedpregnancy.Itwillbe
promotedthroughoutthemonthofOctober2015onpostersandflyers.Also,wewillputasmallbooth
onthefirstfloorofBrackenLibraryfrom4pmto9pmonOctober8th,wherewewillpassoutflyers
explainingthismessagewithgraphics.Brackenisarenownedplaceforstudyingoncampus;so,this
promotesourmessageofpursuingonesgoalsthrougheducationtodiscourageunsafesexualactivity.
Objective:ByMay2016,thenumberofBallStatestudentswhoreportconsistentlycarryacondomwill
increaseby40%.
ThenextobjectiveisthatbyMay2016,therewillbea40%increaseinthenumberofBSU
studentswhoreportconsistentlycarryingacondom.Ourfirstmessagetopromotethisobjectivewillbe,

Dontkilltheheatofthemomentbynotbeingprepared.Thiswillgrabouraudiencesattention,and
helpthemrealizethatnothavingacondomcouldruinthemoodduringsexualintercourse.Thiswill
helpourtargetaudiencerealizetheyshouldalwaysbepreparedtouseacondom.Topromotethis
message,wewillhostabowlingeventinApril.ThiswilltakeplaceattheStudentCenterbowlingalley
from6pmto8pm.Becausethisisaninteractiveevent,morestudentsmightwanttocomejointhefun;
therefore,wewillbeabletopromoteourprogramtoagreaternumberofstudents.
Oursecondmessageforthisobjectiveis,Yousnoozeyoulose.Wewillpromotethismessage
duringthemonthofMarch.InthebeginningofMarchourprogramwillhaveseveralpostersandflyers
placedallthroughoutcampusincludingtheAtrium,recreationalcenter,andStudentCenter.Wewill
alsopromotethismessagebypassingoutflyersatthescramblelightfrom11amto3pmeveryFriday
duringMarch2016.ThestrategyofhavingthismessageinMarchisbecausethisisnormallythetime
forspringbreak.SincespringbreakisduringMarch,wewillbeabletostresstheimportanceofusing
condomsbeforestudentsengageinunsaferiskybehaviors.Ifstudentssnoozeonspringbringbreak
andforgettouseacondom,theycouldloseandpotentiallyfacethenegativeconsequences.
Objective:ByMay2016,therewillbea25%increaseinthenumberofBallStatestudentswhoknow
howprevalentunintendedpregnanciesareamongcollegestudents.
Ourprogramwillpromotethisobjectivethroughtheuseoftwomessages:Dontbeastatistic,
andNotusingacondom:flippingacoinonyourchancesofunintendedpregnancy.Ourprogramwill
focusonthisobjectivethroughthemonthsofNovemberandDecember.Followingourfirstandsecond
focusgroups,ourprogramdiscoveredthatstudentswithinourtargetpopulationdonotperceive
themselvessusceptibletounintendedpregnancy(Cihlar,DeWeese,Payson,&Trezak,2014).Although
theymayhaveexperiencednumerouspregnancyscares,theydonotactuallybelievetheywillget
pregnant.Thefirstmessage,Dontbeastatistic,simplymeanstosetyourselfapartfromother
collegestudentswhohaveaddedtothehighrateofunintendedpregnancy.Inordertopromotethis
message,boothswillbesetupintheAtriumandattherecreationalcenterdisplayinginformation
regardingprevalenceratesandstatisticsaboutunintendedpregnancyamongthispopulationfrom10am
to5pmonSeptember4th.Flyersandcondomswillbedistributedinordertopromoteourmessage.
DuringDecember,wewillpromotethemessageNotusingacondom:flippingacoinonyour
chancesofunintendedpregnancy.Thismessagecanbeusedtoelicitascareinourtargetaudience,in
ordertounderstandtheirchancesofunintendedpregnancy.Thismessageisbasedonthestatisticthat
Sixteenpercentofsexuallyactivecollegefemales,whodonotpracticeanyformofcontraceptionuse,
accountfor52%oftheunintendedpregnanciesintheUnitedStateseachyear(GuttmacherInstitute,
2013).Inordertopromotethismessage,ourprogramwilldisseminateaflyerwithagraphicofa

quartershowingitbeingflippedintheairwiththemessagestatedatthebottom.Wewillpostflyers
throughthemainareasofcampus:recreationalcenter,businessbuilding,RobertBell,DavidLetterman,
BrackenLibrary,Atrium,TeachersCollege,NorthQuad,CooperScience,andallfreshmandorms.We
willpost3flyersperbuildingforthemonthofDecember.

CondomShoppe.
Oursecondmessageforthisobjective,Whatsmoreembarrassing:buyingcondomsorgetting
unintentionallypregnant?willbeourprogramsfocusthroughoutFebruary.Thisphrasewillbepartof
thedesignonlargepostersdisplayedinhightrafficbuildingsoncampus.Wewillalsopostthemessage
asadiscussiontopiconourprogramsFacebookandTwittertogeneratediscussionamongstudents.By
stressingtheimportanceofcondomusewiththesemessages,wewillhopefullybeabletoovercomethe
negativesocialstigmamanypeopleassociatewithcondoms.

VI.Materials
Ourprogramwillproposea30secondtelevisionPSAtoourtargetaudience.ThisPSAwill
portrayseriousandemotionaltonesinordertoelicitthedesiredresponsefromourtargetaudience.
Seriousandemotionaltoneswillmosteffectivelycapturetheimportanceofincreasingcondomusein
ordertopreventunintendedpregnancy.ThisPSAwillbeusedinordertoprovokeascare,whichwill
influenceourtargetaudiencetopracticesafesex.OurprogramwillcreateatelevisionPSAthatwill
depictanaveragefemalecollegestudentwhoisuncertainifsheispregnantornot.Shewillbegetting
readyforajobinterview,whilecontemplatingwhethertotakeapregnancytest.Shewillfinallydecide
totakethepregnancytest,whichwillturnuppositive.Shewillbegintocrybecauseofthe
consequencesofunintendedpregnancy,andthenthescreenwillgoblack.Wordswillappearonthe
screenstating,Notusingacondomcanunexpectedlychangeyourfuture.Protectyourself.Slowand
sombermusicwillbeplayingthroughoutthedurationofthecommercial,inordertogivethemessagea
seriousandemotionaleffect.Thiscommercialwillallowourtargetaudiencetoreflectonthe
consequencestheymayfaceasaresultofnotusingacondom.Inaddition,afemalecollegestudentas
themaincharacterwillconveythemessagethatunintendedpregnancycanhappentoanyonewhodoes
notpracticesafesex;therefore,thiswillincreaseourtargetaudiencesperceivedsusceptibility.
Ourprogramwillalsocreateposterstodisplaythroughoutcampus.Theposterwillhavealarge
balancebeaminthecenteroftheposter.Ononeendofthebalancebeamtherewillbeaboxof
condomswithasingledollarsignbeneaththepicture.Ontheotherendofthebalancebeamtherewill
beapictureofababywithafewofthetoys,diapers,andbottles,whicharenecessitiesinordertotake
careofababy.Thesideofthebalancebeamwiththebabyonitwillbeweigheddown,andwillhave
fourdollarsigns.Thiswillindicatethatbabiesaremoreexpensivethanbuyingaboxofcondoms.At
thebottomoftheposter,wewillstatethequestion:Whatismoreembarrassing:buyingcondomsor
gettingunintentionallypregnant?Theseposterswillforcestudentstothinkabouttherisksand
potentialconsequencestheycouldfaceiftheyarenotwillingtousecondoms.Itwillallowthemto
weighthebenefitsandbarriersbyvisuallyindicatingthepricesyoupayforaboxofcondoms,as
opposedtoababyandallthenecessitieswithit.Ourprogramisawarethatdecisionsareaffectedbyan
interactionofbenefitsandbarriers.Therefore,wechosetoprovidebothbenefitsandbarrierstoour
flyer,inordertovisuallyexplainhowunprotectedsexcreatesmorecoststhancondoms.Theseposters

willbedisplayedthroughoutcommonareasofcampusincludingrecreationalcenter,Brackenlibrary,
theatrium,NorthQuad,andallfreshmanresidencehalls.

VII.Partnership
Alongwithourmaterialstohelppromoteourprogram,ourpartnershipswillalsohelpus
successfullyadvocateforourprograminordertoachieveourgoals.Ourprogramwouldliketohave
twopartnerships,theCondomShoppeandtheBallStateCommunicationCenter.Ourprogramchose
thesepartnershipsbecausetheyarelocatedonBallStateUniversityscampusandhaveaccesstomany
resourcesthatcanhelpimproveourprogram.
TheCondomShoppeisapromisingpartnershipforourprogrambecausetheyhavethe
knowledgeandresourcesavailabletohelppromotecondomusetoourtargetpopulation.TheCondom
ShoppeislocatedinsidetheHealthCenter.Theywillbeabletohelpupwiththeknowledgeof
promotingourprogrambecausetheyhavepromotedfortheirownevents.Thisallowsustolearnfrom
thepromotionalstrategiestheyhavedoneinthepastwiththeirshoptoputthesamestrategiesinto
promotingourprogram.Theyalsohelpuswithourprogrambecausetheyarepromotingthesame
behavior,condomuse.TheypromotecondomusebygivingawayfivefreecondomsadaytoBallState
students(BallStateUniversity,2014c).Thiscanplayintoouradvantageandhelpeliminateabarrierto
ourprogram,whichisthecostofcondoms.Bygivingfreecondoms,studentswonthavetheexcusethat
theydonthaveenoughmoneytopayforcondoms.TheCondomShoppealsoprovidesuswiththe
opportunitypassoutfreecondomsinalargequantity.Sinceourprogramispromotingresponsible
sexualbehaviors,theywillgiveustheopportunitytogiveawayalargequantityoffreecondoms
throughoutcampus(BallStateUniversity,2014c).
TheBallStateCommunicationCenterwouldalsobeanotherorganizationwewouldliketo
partnerwith.Theycouldhelpuswithpromotingourprogramandourdesiredbehavior:condomuse.
Theywouldbeabletospreadthewordandadvertiseabouteventsourprogrammaybehostingthrough
BallStateswebsite.TheirwebsiteisdedicatedtoinformstudentsaboutnewsandeventsonBallState's
campus(BallStateUniversity,2014b).Ourprogramcanusethistoouradvantagebecausewecan
informstudentsonsafesexpracticesthroughtheirwebsite.Forexample,eachweektherecouldbea
factpublishedontheirwebsiteaboutsafesexpractices.Wecouldalsousethistohelppromoteany
eventsourprogramwillbehaving.TheCommunicationCenteralsohasaccesstotheradiostationon
campus.Thisisanotherwayforthecentertohelpuspromoteanyeventortovocalizetheimportanceof
usingacondomandotherresponsiblesexbehaviors.Inaddition,theCommunicationCentercouldbe
abletoprovideuswithfacilitiestheyhaveavailabletouseforourprogramactivitiesorevents.They

willhaveaccesstomanysitesoncampus,inwhichourprogramcantakeadvantageoftouseforevents
wewillbeholding.
