Book When I Care about Others by Cornelia Spelman.
Picture of heart
2 Tables
Number Activity Mats
III. Procedure:
A. Motivation
1. I will enter circle time and show the children a picture of a heart.
2. I will ask the children do they know what shape this is. (pointing to the
heart)
3. I will ask the children to tell me what comes to mind when they think
about hearts. (Love, caring...etc.)
B. Steps

1. I will tell the children that today were going to read a book about caring
about others.
2. I will introduce the book When I Care about Others by Cornelia Spelman
3. I will ask the children do they know what the author of a story does.
Illustrator?
4. I will begin to read the story, and engage in active reading with the
children, asking them various questions as the story move along. (Whats
this? What are they doing in this picture? Whats this word?)
5. When the book has ended, I will tell the children that where going to paint
hearts today.
6. I will ask the children what color is a heart (red)
7. I will allow the children to go to their seats based on the color they are
wearing. Ill start with red because of the previous question and continue
with blue, green, etc.
8. I will tell each child to put on an art smock and roll up their sleeves if they
have on long sleeve.
9. Ill give each child a brush.
10. I will put 1 bowl on each table.
11. I will instruct that we are all sharing paint, so we have to be kind to our
friends.
12. I will allow the children to start painting their hearts, as I walk around to
assist anyone who needs help.
13. I will wait for everyone to finish painting, and tell them when they are done
to leave it on the table to dry and meet me back in circle time.
IV. Conclusion:
I will have the children come back to the carpet. I will put the children in 2 groups.
I will have number mats placed on the floor. I will tell the children that we are
going to play a racing number game. I will explain to the children that they must
jump on each mat, say the number that is on the mat, jump that number of times
on the mat, and also tell me what is on the picture. Once they jump on all the
mats, they run back and tag the next person. After everyone has gotten a turn,
we will all return to the table.
V. Transition:
I will hand out I care about my handout. I will have everyone glue their dried
painted hearts on to the handout. I will walk around one by one and ask them
who or what do they care about (mom, dog, doll etc.) and write it on the heart.
After I write the name on the heart they can clean up and go to the learning
center of their choice.
VI. Follow-Up Activities/Learning Centers:
1. Hang caring hearts up around the class room
2. Add story When I Care about Others By Cornelia Spelman in library
3. Ask children to express other things they care about.
