Grade Level: 6 and 7

This lesson will help teach English as

a second language students terms and

The students will be required to fill
out a worksheet and flash cards

on the vocabulary.
The lesson will take a minimum of 30
minutes ( 10 minutes to teach, 10
minutes to create flashcards, and 10
minutes to complete the worksheet).

Cochran Middle School students

range from the ages of 12-14 (6th-7th
grade). The school is located in Los
Angeles, CA with 33% of the students
being English Language Learners.
Most of these students are immigrants
and live in spanish-speaking homes in
this area. Because of this, the

them in English with the help of their

flashcards and without the help of
their teacher or peers.
Students must complete the
worksheet without a textbook and
with the aid of flashcards within 10
minutes.
The worksheet is graded out of 10
points with each point counted for
every labeled family member without
any errors.

Materials

Procedure

The teacher will make her own family

tree and place it on the projector.
The teacher will then point to each
family member and say the word in
both English and Spanish to help the
students recognize it better (this
should take about 10 minutes).
While the teacher is doing this, the
students will write down the words
being said on their note cards that
were given to them at the beginning
of the class time.
The students will now have a couple
of minutes to review their notecards
and what they learned from the
lesson.
The teacher will now pass out the
worksheet and explain the
instructions to the students.
The students will have 10 minutes to
complete their worksheet, but they
will only be able to reference their
note cards...not the teacher or other
classmates.
The teacher will now collect the
