TWS 6: Analysis of Student Learning

Savannah Taylor
Lesson 1
A. Whole Class
a. After giving instruction through a read aloud, and
PowerPoint on 9 habitats (Desert, Wetlands, Forest,
Mountain, Ocean, Arctic, Antarctic, Grassland, and Rain
Forest) they will then have a clearer understanding of
how animals and plants need specific habitats in order
to survive.

Key: YES under the headings below, developing, and
mastery indicates where the students are at the post
assessment.
b. To summarize, I feel like the lesson acted like a
reinforcement for the students since this is a classroom
with 3 grade levels, they had some exposure before this
lesson. The students really were receptive to the
information that I was giving them and in turn took their
independent lesson and really completed it to the best
of their ability. None of my students were in the below
category for the post assessment, most were in the
mastery. But those who are in the developing are those
students who maybe got the concept, but didnt
present the information factually.
B. Individuals
a. It is important to analyze the data from all students
ranging in degree of performance not only to see how
they performed on the specific lesson, but also to see if
instructional strategies need to be changed in order to
help those students ranging from high, medium, and
low. Through this analysis I would be able to gather the
information I needed in order to help guide the students
with further instruction.
b. Quantitative- High- performed very well on the pre and
post assessment, this student received a 100% on his
mastery of the lesson objective for this lesson. MiddleThis student also performed at 100% in her mastery of
the pre and post assessment, this student received an
80% correctness on her mastery of this lesson and the
objective due to some parts being left out. Low- This
student performed very weakly on the pre and post
assessment. The student did not pay attention during
the whole group instruction, but when asked the pre
assessment question the response was correct. The
post assessment was done very poorly but the

objective was met, which is why this student received a

developing score for this lesson.
Qualitative- High- The high student was very involved
in the lesson from the beginning of the lesson to the
very end. This student is very creative and really took
her time when completing her individual lesson and
really exceeded expectations. Medium- This student is
very attentive in class and really tries their best on all
work that is completed and turned in. Sometimes this
student gets ahead of herself and really tries hard to
speed through lessons to get more done which is why
she received an 80% for her post assessment because
of correctness. Low- This student is very hard to keep
on track and is constantly being distracted, which is the
result of his developing score for this lesson objective.
During the duration of the lesson, this student was
looking around, not paying attention and actually was
distracting others around him, which was very obvious.

b. To summarize this lesson, I feel that it was a good
introductory lesson with the appropriate
reinforcements to stabilize what the learning
objectives were. Students performed well, even my
low student did and I believe this happened because
they had a small background of what Similes were
and this helped in their completion of individual
grade lessons. The post assessment was very good
as far as completion, but some students did need
some extra attention on the composition of Similes
as we talked about them being a complete idea and
having to make sense. But, Mrs. Jenkins was going to
instruct these students in a small group at a later
date.
B. Individuals:
a. It is important to analyze the data from all
students especially high, medium, and low in
order to get a better understanding of your
instructional strategies and how to better
instruction to benefit students. By analyzing
your high student, you are able to create more
activities to further their understanding of the
lesson objectives once they have mastered the
main lesson. By analyzing your medium
student, you are able to get a better
understanding of how to reach the middle of the
class and to better instruction for your average
students. By analyzing the low student you are
able to understand what they are struggling
with and how to better your instruction to reach
this child and to benefit them to grasp the
lesson objectives.

b. Quantitative- High- My high student performed

well on the pre and post assessment. Met all
objectives and received a 100% mastery for this
lesson. Medium- The medium student also
performed very well on the pre and post
assessment and also had a 100% mastery for
this lesson and all objectives. The reason this
student was classified as medium, was because
of neatness and this student didnt use
complete and clear ideas. Low- This student
didnt perform well on the pre assessment, but
did meet one requirement for the post
assessment. This student was classified as low
due to the fact that he did not use complete
ideas when creating his similes and didnt
complete the worksheet very neatly.
Qualitative- High- This student is always very
attentive in class and performs well on all
lessons completed during the course of the day.
So, it was no surprise that this student did so
well on all assessments and the activity.
Medium- This student tried their hardest on
everything, but sometimes needs a push in the
right direction when it comes to following
instruction and being detailed. Which is why the
student was classified as medium due to the
fact that she did not use complete ideas on the
post assessment worksheet. Low- This student
is also another student who tries hard on all
lessons completed but doesnt listen to
instruction and doesnt complete work
thoroughly.

Lesson 3
For this lesson I was not able to gather any information due to the
fact that we didnt complete it because of the instruction wasnt
being affective on the students. I was becoming frustrated and so
was the students, so we stopped the lesson completely and Mrs.
Jenkins picked back up with it at a later day.

c. The table above shows the impact on students

by showing the requirements that needed to be
met for the post assessment. This lesson was
very successful and I feel that all students
gained a lot of factual knowledge through this
instruction and the objectives. Students did
have a small background on writing letters and
how to complete them accurately. Even with a
little bit of background knowledge from past
instruction, the students still did not know the
correct parts of a letter that are required, and
with the post assessment and completion of
their own letter, the lesson objective was
reinforced.
B. Individuals
a. It is important to analyze the data from all students,
especially high, medium and low students to better
instruction for the future to benefit the students. Through
analyzing these 3 students, I would be able to better
instruction to make sure each student got what they
needed from this lesson. Since all of my students
performed very well on this assessment, I think for the

next time I will make more challenging activities to

accompany this lesson objective and really try to test the
students to see what they know and dont know on a
deeper, more intellectual level with writing letters and
maybe more about letter completion.
b. Quantitative: High- This student really put a lot of effort
into this lesson and the post assessment writing sample.
She completed all of the required parts with mastery and
even went above what I was expecting, which was a
pleasant surprise! Medium- This student really did a good
job composing the letter, but had some mechanical
mistakes and writing wasnt very neat which is why this
student was classified as medium. The letter itself was
composed very well and had clear ideas. Low- This
student did not include the 5 parts of the letter in his
composition and didnt have clear ideas or neat writing.
The one requirement that the student did meet for the
post assessment was to address the envelope correctly.
Qualitative- High- This student preforms very well on all
lessons completed in class and is achieving very highly for
a 3rd grader. I appreciate her effort in hard work, but I
think this student excelled in this lesson because she
loves to write and to make up stories, so this peaked her
interest. Medium- This student also is very creative,
which is why I think this student performed so well. But,
even with creativity, this student still had some
mechanical errors and writing issues that were addressed
through further instruction by Mrs. Jenkins. Low- This
student has trouble focusing and is always off task during
the work cycle. I could tell that his letter was thrown
together very quickly and did not include many sentences
nor complete ideas. This student was almost expected not
to do well since he is OCD and doesnt care to write for
fear of doing something incorrectly.

c. The table above demonstrates the critical thinking that

was done through this instruction. This lesson was made
to promote a classroom environment where everyones
unique attributes are embraced and to where the students
found out a little bit more about each other. Through a
read aloud, writing sample, and visual art activity the
students learned how to embrace each others
differences. I saw a trend in this lesson that by allowing

students to be creative and let them do things on their

own that they will pleasantly surprise you and will get
more out of a lesson with little instruction when it comes
to character building and community within a classroom.
B. Individuals
a. It is important to analyze all student data from different
assessments to better instruction. Through this lesson,
whenever I looked at my high, medium, and low students,
I recognized that I could challenge the students to do so
much more than what was expected of them which I
believe is why all students did moderately well on this
lesson. In the future when I teach this lesson through the
analysis of their assessments I will better be able to come
up and incorporate meaningful ideas within the lesson
objectives.
b. Quantitative- High- My high student really took this
lesson seriously and performed well on the pre and post
assessment. With the assessment score for this student
being 100% (by covering all requirements listed in the
table above) is why this student was classified as high
achieving. Medium- While scoring a 100% for pre
assessment questions, this student did listen to
instructions and completed the writing sample and visual
arts activity within the given time, but did not stay on
topic during the writing sample. Through those mistakes
within the writing, the student scored an 85% on the post
assessment and was classified as medium performing.
Low- This student did not perform well on the pre nor post
assessment. While not doing what instructed on the
writing sample and not staying focused during this time
resulted in a lack of material and a lot of mistakes which
ended up making the post assessment score less than an
80% making the student not master the lesson objective.
Qualitative- High- This student does exceptionally well on
all writing assignments and is very creative. No issues are
ever had over this student and she is always on task, and
strives every day to get all lessons completed. With such a
high competency on lessons, I believe this is why this
student performed so well on this lesson activities.

Medium- This student did complete the task that was

given to her, but as usual still needed guidance and help
with staying on task which resulted in the sample not
being written appropriately and not using clear ideas. This
student isnt a problem child, but struggles sometimes
with focusing on school work. Low- This student struggles
with writing and also has behavioral problems. On this
day, we also had many adults in our room which caused
some distractions which I think influenced this students
performance.
