Classroom Behavior Action Plan

Summary of behavior management philosophy:

Glassers Choice Theory, is the main theory on which my philosophy of
education and behavior management is built. The Choice Theory is based on
the idea that students are responsible for their behaviors, and that each
individual can control how he or she behaves. I too believe in each
individuals ability to control behavior. Everyone has the option to misbehave
or to behave in positive ways.
Glasser believed that when students misbehave, it is important to sit down
with the student and ask what you, the teacher can do to help. Then, there
should be class discussions and meetings on what behaviors took place and
how things could have been handled differently in a positive way. I agree that
teachers need to be open with students and take into consideration the
possible reasons that may lie behind the behaviors of the students. If you
punish and do not take the time to figure out the underlying reasons, you may
not change the behavior. I will take the time to talk with my students and
give them the opportunity to share their frustrations and conflicting
behaviors. By having close student-teacher relationships, I will be able to get
to the cause of the behavior and help the student come up with alternatives
to prevent the unwanted behavior from occurring in the future.
By being positive and open with my students, my classroom will be a fun and
safe place for students to learn and grow as a community of learners.
The following procedures and expectations are for early elementary
grade levels:
Beginning the day: Children will enter the room politely; put away their
backpack, lunch, and coat; turn in homework; sit at his/her desk and read
alone or do before-school work silently.
Entering the room from other daily activities: Children will enter quietly
and politely; follow the appropriate procedures for each time of day (e.g.,
morning, after lunch, after a special class).
Taking out/putting away/caring for supplies: Children will share group
supplies; recap markers and glue; check the number written on the supplies

to make sure they belong in your group basket; if something belongs to

another group, return it to them quietly.
Absent and Tardiness: I will follow the schools procedures for children
being absent and tardy.
Seating arrangement: Children will have assigned seats in which to do
individual work. Desk will be arranged in such a way, that all students can
see the teacher and board.
Lining up: Children will stand up quietly; push in their chair; take all
necessary items; line up without touching others or talking; face the front of
the line; watch where they are going.
Participating in group lessons: Children will politely find a place to sit
where they can do their best learning; sit flat, not on their knees; listen
carefully for new information; raise their hand to speak; children will not
speak when someone else is speaking.
Obtaining help with assignments: Children will be allowed to quietly ask
the students at his/her table for help with directions if they need it; if they
are working alone, children will raise their hand to get help from me; if they
are working with a group, they can ask me or classmates, for help in
understanding how to do the assignment.
Handing in finished work/homework: Children will make sure their name is
on their paper; place their paper upside down in the "finished work" or
"homework" basket.
Helping other students: In a cooperative classroom, it is good to help one
another; if someone needs help with directions or reading an assignment,
children can him or her if they are able; if someone needs help with
understanding the problem, the child will tell him or her to ask me for help;
We will never put down another student who asks for help.
When and how to use the drinking fountain or sink: When I am not
teaching the whole group, children may get a drink; children may bring a
water bottle to keep on their desk; if children need to wash their hands, they
may use a little soap; wipe up any water they spill.
When and how to use the school restroom: (Younger students) will be
allowed to get up and use the restroom freely as long as I am not in the
middle of teaching a lesson. (Older students) One student at a time my use

the lavatory pass. They must return with the pass within three minutes or
they will lose the privilege of going to the lavatory freely.
Storing and Organizing our desk and materials: Children will only have out
on their desk materials for the task we are working on. All other materials,
should be stored in his or her desk until time for use. There will be
community baskets of pencils, and crayons that will be kept out at all times
for childrens use during assignments.
When and how to use the pencil sharpener: At the beginning of each
assignment, the person I've chosen to be the "Pencil Sharpener" will invite
children to have him or her sharpen their pencil; if a childs pencil breaks
during an assignment, they may use a community pencil; only the "Pencil
Sharpener" can run the sharpener and empty it.
Throwing away trash: Children may throw away trash whenever they need
to if I am not teaching the whole group; Children will make sure all trash
lands in the can and pick up trash even if it isn't theirs.
Signals for attention: When I need the childrens attention, I will say
Children give me five as soon as children hear the signal, they are to stop
what they are doing, look at me, and listen for directions.
What to do during free time: If a child is finished with an assignment, they
may first work on any unfinished assignments that are in the front pocket of
their work notebook; when they are finish, they may choose to do his/her
classroom job, read a book, write a story, illustrate a book, make up math
problems, peer-tutor someone who needs help, or create a song about what
the class is studying.
Ending the day: Children will clean off his/her desk; leave out their work
notebook; pick up any trash within three feet of their desk; stack their chair;
wait quietly to be dismissed.

Student Behavior Expectations

These expectations will be posted in my room.
1.
2.
3.
4.

Please and thank you, are magic words

Celebrate each others success
Work hard and be kind to others
Listen to your teacher and follow directions

5. Do your best, and have fun learning

Discipline plan/consequences
I will have three apples on the wall of my classroom, green, yellow, and red.
All students will start the day on the Green apple.

The first warning will be a verbal.

The second warning- the childs pin will be moved to the yellow apple.
If a student changes behavior, he/she may go back to the green apple

at any time during the day.

Continued inappropriate behavior will cause the childs pin to go on the

red apple.
There will be a lunch bunch reward for students not on red. This means

they can eat in the classroom with the teacher.

A color change to red will be cause for a note or phone call to the

parent.
All students that remain on green for the whole day will receive a
reward from the teacher. Ex: chance ticket, sticker, star, stamp, etc

Positive Reinforcements
I believe every child has the potential to be bright and beautiful like a
rainbow! So in my class we will build rainbows for good behavior. If a child is
caught going the extra mile for good behavior, he/she can earn a piece for
their rainbow. At the end of each week, if the rainbow is complete, the child
will get to choose a prize from the treasure box.

Behavior Contracts
Every child will have a daily contract in which the days activities will be
broken into 30-45 minutes with the name of the activity (ex: dismissal from
gym, science, lunch, etc). There will be a section for notes. Each child will
take this home in his/her homework folder each day and have it signed by
his/her parent.
For individual children that need a specific behavior contract, an agreement
will be made by the parent and student, stating what reward they will receive
at home for following through with good behavior, sign it and give to teacher
to have on record.

Example: _______________ will be allowed to watch cartoons on T.V, on the days

he has made a sincere effort to finish his work in a timely manner, keep his
hands, feet and objects to himself, and follow the guidelines for success in
the classroom, on these day ______________will receive a gold star to take
home!
