Sound

Sound
A form of energy caused when something
vibrates, or moves quickly back and forth.

Sound Waves
Areas of high and low pressure made from
compressions that create sound.

Wavelength
The distance between compressions of a wave.

Vibration
Quick motion back and forth

Amplitude = volume
(the higher the louder)
Wavelength = pitch
(the farther the lower)
(the closer the higher)

Medium
A substance that has an effect
on sound/material that sound
travels through.
For example: Air which sound can
travel through

Speed of Sound
Air = 770mph
Water = 3,080 mph
Soilds = 11,550mph
Speed of light = 670,616,629mph

Sonic Boom
A large wave caused by an object going faster
than the speed of sound.

Noise Pollution
Any sound that causes problems for people or
things

Amplitude
How much energy a sound wave has.

Volume/Loudness
The amount of sound energy that reaches your
ear

Pitch
The lowness or highness of a sound
High pitch- vibrations are fast
Low pitch- vibrations are slow

Decibels
Measurement of
loudness

Absorb and Reflect

Absorb: take in sound
Reflect: bounce back sound which is called
an echo

Sonar
Tool used to locate objects or measure depth
using sound waves and reflection

LIGHT

Electromagnetic Spectrum
travels in waves and spans a broad spectrum from
very long radio waves to very short gamma rays.

When you tune your radio, watch TV, send a text

message, or pop popcorn in a microwave oven, you are
using electromagnetic energy.

Light Rays
They do NOT curve around corners. They
travel in straight lines until they strike a
medium.

Medium (Review)
An intervening substance in
which an effect is produced.

Reflection
Light bouncing back or off of surfaces.

Temperature
Light rays create heat when absorbed by an
object.
Ex. Black shirt attracts heat

Refraction
The bending of light. This happens when light
goes from one medium to another.

Prism
solid, transparent object that refracts light that
passes through it.

Absorbed
Taken in.
Light is taken in by some colors/objects

Create an obstacle course with

mirrors and light.

Lens
smooth piece of glass or plastic that refracts
light.

Shadows
Draw the shadow of each picture.
