Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

Introduction: Bellwork-Students will use MimioVote student responders to answer 3

multiple-choice questions on classifying polynomials by degree and number of terms (review
from previous lesson)

Prior Knowledge: Prior to completing this lesson, students should have the understanding
that algebraic terms can be combined if they are like, and that combining like terms allows
for simplifying of algebraic expressions. Students should also be able to correctly simplify an
algebraic expression using the laws of exponents.

Objective: Students will learn how to add and subtract polynomials by combining like
terms. Students will apply their knowledge of adding and subtracting polynomials to real-life
situations.
Materials: Chromebook for each student; Algebra Nation videos; Algebra Nation interactive
study guide (available in workbook format); a word-processing or slideshow program (e.g.,
Google Docs or Slides); Mimio Notebook and MimioVote student responders; IXL Math
website; pencils

Time: 1-2 class periods (each class period is 47 minutes long)

Process:
1. Students will enter class and complete the bellwork assignment, consisting of 3
questions to be answered via MimioVote and designed to review the previous lesson.
2. Teacher will review answers to bellwork questions with class.
3. Using their Chromebooks, students will log in to Algebra Nation, and view the video
titled Adding and Subtracting Polynomials in Section 1: Working With Expressions
(video found here: https://web.algebranation.com/)While viewing the video,
students will complete the interactive study guide which coincides with this video.
4. Students will use the information they have learned to create a graphic organizer
(using word-processing) or slideshow (using presentation software) which can be
used to teach their peers how to add and subtract polynomials. They must include
examples of each.
5. Teacher will facilitate and monitor as students complete the assigned video, providing
assistance as needed.
Standards:
Florida Standards:
MAFS.912.A-APR.1 Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers,
namely, they are closed under the operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication;
add subtract, and multiply polynomials.
MAFS.912.A-APR.1.AP.1a: Understand the definition of a polynomial.

MAFS.912.A-APR.1.AP.1b: Understand the concepts of combining like terms and

closure.
MAFS.912.A-APR.1.AP.1c: Add, subtract, and multiply polynomials and understand
how closure applies under these operations.

Assessments:
Formative: Teacher Observation and Questioning
Summative: Student-created graphic organizer or slideshow demonstrating understanding
of the processes for adding/subtracting polynomials
Extension:
Students with ESE/ESOL accommodations will receive extended time to create their
projects.
Students will be able to practice adding/subtracting polynomials using IXL Math, found here:
