Course Outline Assignment

Course Analysis
Course Name: MTH 225: College Algebra
Course Length: 11 Weeks
Course Type: Blended / Hybrid (2 Face-to-Face Sessions)
Average Student:
Lower Level Undergraduate Student. Familiar with basic Algebra (MTH 125
Pre-requisite); must have made a C or higher in this course.
Content Analysis:

Students should be familiar with basic Algebra concepts such as integers,

associative property, commutative property, and distributive property.
(Learn in Pre-Requisite MTH 125)
Students should be able to use the different properties separately and
together in equations and word problems. They should also be able to look
at a problem and tell which property is being demonstrated. (Learned in
Pre-Requisite MTH 125)
Students should be able to operate a scientific calculator. (Assumed
General Information)

General Goals:

Learn analytical skills such as an understanding where Algebra comes

from, and the ability to abstract general principles from examples.
Learn problem-solving and modeling skills such as the ability to recognize
which real-world problems are subject to mathematical reasoning, the
ability to make vague ideas precise by representing them in a
mathematical notation, and techniques for solving problems expressed in
mathematical notation.
Learn Communication skills such as the ability to formulate a
mathematical statement and the ability to present a mathematical
argument verbally.
Develop reading and research skills to be able to extend ones
mathematical knowledge further through independent reading and
successful experience in solving mathematical problems presenting
substantial intellectual challenge.

Enhancing Learning:

This course will give students the knowledge in mathematics to be able to

continue on to higher math classes and be successful, since Algebra is the
foundation of them all. The purpose of Algebra is to make it easy to state the
relationship by using letters to represent entities as a form of shorthand. The
relationship is then called an equation. Algebra then allows you to substitute
values for entities in order to determine the value of other items. Finally, you
can manipulate the equations to solve for the various items or unknown
quantities. Also, learning algebra helps to develop your basic problem solving
skills. The more math you learn, the more you will develop problem solving
skills which can be applied to any situation in life. You use Algebra in all sorts
of careers ranging from a doctor to an engineer and everywhere in between.
The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that
mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students.
These practices are based on important processes and proficiencies that
have longstanding importance in mathematics education. The first of these
are the Alabama Course of Study (ALCOS) process standards of problem
solving, reasoning and proof, communication, representation, and
connections.

General Course Assessments

Collaboration: Each week I will assign you with a partner, and give you 2
harder type problems. Both of you will work on this together and turn it in as
one assignment. This will be counted as bonus points. I will also open a
Wimba classroom, so that, if you and your partner would like to get together
on there and go over the problems you can.
Discussion Boards: Throughout this course you will have to answer some
vocabulary questions through the discussion board. I want you to put a lot of
thought into your answer. There is no right or wrong answer. I will assign
bonus points, if you do this, if I feel you really tried on these assignments. I
want you to also comment on your fellow students discussion boards and
add things you think they might have missed. I will also give extra credit for
this too, if I see that you have tried and not just written something down.
Homework: After each lesson you will have 20 problems to do online on
MyMathLab covering the concept you just learned about.
Self-test quizzes and Exams: These quizzes each week will determine how
much you are grasping the concept. This will include being able to state
definitions, describe word problems in math terms, and be able to solve
algebra problems. There will be a midterm exam in this class. There will also
be a final exam in this class.

Research Paper: Due at the end of the semester You will write a paper on the
career you are trying to obtain and tell me how you can use Algebra in that
occupation.
Feedback Surveys (3 total): These surveys have been placed throughout the
course to help the instructor gather feedback on areas that could use
improvement.
