Lesson: Elements of Poetry

Grade: 7th grade English Literacy


Time: 50-60 minute class period
Objective: Students will be able to identify and analyze the six elements of
poetry - (figurative language, word choice, sound devices, structure, rhythm and
imagery)

Standards: 8.4 Language & Connotative Meanings


Materials: poster paper, markers, crayons, colored pencils, Literature book,
poetry packet

Procedure:
Intro: Students will write for 6 minutes for the Personal Journal for Day 3 in their
poetry packet
(3 mins) Students who would like to share what they wrote, can
(10 min) Read and review - Students are to silently read the elements of poetry
in their Literature book and take jots about each element. Review together as a
class and provide examples to better comprehend each element
(20-25 mins) Students count off by 6 and get into their appropriate groups.
Students are to construct a poster of the element they are assigned to. Poster
should include: element of poetry, definition in their own words, picture of the
element, example of the element and how it is used in poetry.
(10-15 mins) Students are to share their poster with the class and teach the
class their element they were assigned. They are to be the expert and field all
questions.
*Posters will be hung in the back of the classroom for student reference during
the rest of the poetry unit.
(10 mins) Students will be handed a short quiz to assess their comprehension of
all six of the poetic elements.
