El transporte martimo de corta distancia puede clasificarse siguiendo dos criterios: regularidad del servicio (servicio regular y servicio no regular) o
tipo de carga transportada:
Transporte de contenedores: consiste en el transporte de carga paletizada en distintos tipos de contenedores.
Transporte de carga rodada (RoRo): carga y descarga de vehculos terrestres, vagn o UTIs, en un buque por sus propios medios o mediante la
instalacin de unas ruedas con este fin. Este tipo de buques tambin es apto para el transporte de contenedores.
Transporte convencional: es el transporte de carga sin contenedores. Por ejemplo, contenedores plegables (big bags) u otro tipo de cargas del
tipo granel. Generalmente este tipo de buques llevan instaladas gras para facilitar el proceso de carga y descarga.
Transporte fluvial: es un tipo de transporte an en desarrollo dentro del transporte martimo de corta distancia. La nica diferencia consiste en
que estos buques deben ser aptos para la navegacin en canales y ros. Este tipo de navegacin tiene grandes posibilidades en los pases
escandinavos y en las rutas entre puertos interiores alemanes y del Reino Unido.
