COLOUR
OUT OF
SPACE
Rachel Pilkington
The Redundancy series - 1. The Edge; 2. The Fall; 3. The Plung
The subject of my practice is nature, art in the everyday, place and metaphor. I use macro photography to create a degree of abstraction in my paintings and for this series was particularly attracted to
reections in water. In this series I used the leaf motif as a metaphor for redundancy
Inspiration
Nature, light and colour and the way nature reclaims man-made spaces. The work of artists such as
Juliette Losq, Michael Porter and Kate Bright
EXIT
Construction
Acrylic on primed board applied thinly in layers of transparent colour to enable colour mixing
between layers
Participating Artists
Roman Malinowski

As an artist I always seek to create pieces of art that speak to me and are inspired by different expressions and occurrences in nature thus stir up both my imagination and that of the onlooker. On one
occasion it could be to create a glittering cave deep within the ocean, a hidden gateway to a secret
underwater metropolis. On another occasion I might visualise a mighty hurricane that forms over the
land causing thousands to panic and ee for their lives in fear of losing everything as this terrifying
force imposes itself on the people and all that stands in its way. Although each occasion and piece of
art comes out of imagination, there is a great sense of truth and reality displayed in the forces of
nature. It can be frightening, soothing, rampageous, calm and peaceful, unpredictable, exciting,
dark, enlightening, uncontrollable, ugly at times but abounding in both discovered and undiscovered
beauty. These are only the associations of my imagination, but abstract art is open to interpretation.
My desire is for my art to be decorative, however I also feel that there is and should be more to it
than that. Through the use of thick textures emerging from the surface of the canvas, immersing the
painting in vibrant colours, shapes and depth, I hope to draw people into the picture and into the
world of their own imagination. It is fullling and gratifying when my paintings call out to people and
I hear each persons own personal story, journey and interpretation that they have discovered in my
work
Inspiration
Vibrant forms and colours which also could be associated with different things in nature ranged from
a nature disaster (Hurricane) to a glittering underwater cave
Construction
It is acrylic on canvas. I believe that for me acrylic paint is the best material because comfortable to
use and the effects are very satisfying
Links between the work and our themes
I think it links through my attempts to create something based on nature experimenting mainly with
colour
Inspiration
The use of colour and how I can transform materials. Artist like Gernard Richter
Construction
Foil stuck on wall, plastic sheet hung from brackets. The gap between the foil and plastic created
further distortion, and plays with foreground and background

I concentrate on nature of paint through biological elements of natural forms, taking reference from
microscopic imagery
Inspiration
Microscopic imagery, something you may over look or take for granted
Jess Maxeld
The piece brings together structures from nature in a delicate way as I have focused around making
connections between internal and external forms

I am always interested in attempting to use new forms of production that I haven't before. Here I
have used the skill of laser cutting which I have never tried to do
The work is about structure, texture and pattern. I am looking at natural forms, i.e bark and skin. I
photographed bark to make it look like something it's not
Construction
The piece overall is a mobile made with shing wire, MDF and dowel pieces. The circular forms and
cut out pieces have been produced with the laser cutter from MDF with imagery that I have
produced on photoshop. I have taken inuence from the artist David Burrows who has also produced
a mobile in one of his previous exhibitions. A sculptural piece is something I have never produced
before therefore wanted to give it a try
Inspiration
I have always been interested in texture and patterns, studying them up close. I like to take
photographs to capture the beauty of the world. Ansel Adams is probably the most famous nature
photographer who inspires me
Construction
There are many more photographs about trees and bark but I cancelled it down to my favourite
photos. Then played around with the colour and contrast in Photoshop

The two paintings I would like to show are about continuous line drawing in particular, and trying to
understand how I use colour. I place the colours around the page in a methodical way, creating rules
in my head of what colours touch and what should not, how much of a certain colour should be used
and keeping the use of dark colours to a minimum. The stone piece was taken from the landscape,
experimenting with found objects from my walk; I have transformed them in the same way as the
painting, displaying them on the oor in between the two paintings, showing how the paintings
have mirrored my way of thinking about the stones
My work is based around an open theme of nature, I explored pattern, colour, texture and light within
glass with a strong focus on colour, form and design within natural qualities. As the project progressed
my work began to become more experimental representing a more abstract view of nature. My work
explores abstract natural landscapes such as cosmic scenes as well as many other naturalistic scenes
which are based on natural qualities. My work is focused on using the medium of glass to explore
colour, pattern, texture, light and recreating abstract natural landscapes and perhaps ethereal
otherworldly scenes
Inspiration
The work is based on the area in which I have grown up. I take photographs of walks I take and
transform them into an idealized landscape through the use of paint and drawing
Hayley Moorman
My work is ultimately about combining form with decorative embellishments to create my own
imaginative worlds. I am also playing with truth to material by using a substance commonly
associated with building, instead I am creating futuristic and kitsch imitations of natural forms
Inspiration
What initially inspired my work was a trip to Iceland, where I grew fascinated by the unfamiliar and
spectacular landscape. The Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson designed the Harpa Concert Hall
in Reykjavik and visiting this building and witnessing the interior of the concert hall heavily
inspired my work. The interior has a relationship between light and reection that I really wanted
to include in my practice. I am also inspired by the work of Sara Sze's boulder works and also Lee
Bul's decorative fantasy world's that she creates
Construction
I chose expanding foam due to its unpredictable nature and lack of control over the outcome. I
also love the cavities that get left inside and the way the paint reacts with that kind of surface. The
surface inside mimic that of rocks or crystals that went hand in hand when creating my world. I
used the oor piece as a homage to Richard Long and the way he displays his ndings of the
natural world. With the oating balls I was mirroring the work of Cornelia Parker's 'Edge Of
England' and adding a sense of fantasy with the idea of oating/zero gravity
Inspiration
I have always been interested in the subject of nature and the endless possibilities it entails. Within
this project I wanted to go back to basics and explore natural qualities. My main inspiration was
natural colours, textures, patterns etc. that can be found in nature which I explored through photography. Colour is key within my work as it brings the pieces to life with vibrant, bright colours inspired by
natural qualities. I was also very interested in large scale pieces while experimenting with my projections, artists such as Mark Rothko inspired me in this way
Construction
I used the medium of glass to express my theme due to its organic process and its link to natural
qualities. I used glass workshops to develop my skills and create a playful, working, experimental
practice. I began to focus on how both articial and natural light affected my glass pieces, I found this
an interesting progression as it linked again to natural qualities both contextually and practically
within my work. I then moved onto photography to create abstract natural landscapes which
developed into creating otherworldly cosmic scenes. After looking at artists such as Mark Rothko I
wanted to emerge the viewer into my work therefore I moved on to projecting these photographs to
engulf and surround the viewer
