UMAC Kyoto Meeting & Tour

Kyoto has been called the city of universities. There are about 40 universities in and
around Kyoto. About thirty percent of these institutions of higher learning have
museums. The collections of these museums, comprising such genres as historical
documents and art, are not only used for research and education but have also been
exhibited and published. However, these activities are not well known to the people of
the community.
Museums belonging to universities in Kyoto work together through the University
Museum Association of Kyoto, founded in 2011. This network includes 15 of the 14 city,
national, and private university museums, covering a variety of comprehensive, history,
culture, arts and crafts, education and religions.

International Museum Day Symposium in Kyoto

On May 17, the day before the International Museum Day, ICOM-Japan will organize
an international symposium, Internationalization of Japanese Museums, from 1:30 to
5:30 pm, at the Kyoto National Museum.
The symposium assembles leaders of major museum associations in Japan, to discuss
the outlook toward hosting of the ICOM General Conference in Kyoto in 2019, and the
challenges met by Japanese museums toward internationalization.
At the end of January 2015, ICOM-Japan submitted a bidding paper to the
