Students Prior Knowledge:

Independently use a computer and follow simple links
to resources.
Students have an understanding of the states of matter
for solids, liquids and gasses.
Students are aware of the differences between a
chemical solution and mixture.
Students are aware of what constitutes an element or
compound
Students are able to competently use an iPad.
Students can independently navigate programs such
as Piktochart due to prior exposure.

Strand/Topic from the Australian Curriculum:

Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
Distinguish between an element and compound.
Describe two different elements.
Describe two different compounds.

Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation:

Table at the back of classroom with a piece of gold, silver,
chalk and some water all with QR codes linking students
to resources about each piece.
iPads (one between two students)
Weebly link posted on Kidblog site
Page of instructions to be projected during the lesson

Provision for students at educational risk:

Low achieving students to be paired with a higher
achieving student so that the high achieving student
can take on a leadership role by explaining to the low
achieving student the concepts outlined during tasks
one and two.

LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)

Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

Motivation and Introduction:

Resources/References

1. Remind students of upcoming Science night.

2. Tell students that today they will be creating an online poster to be
shared at Science night using Piktochart.
Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):
1. Instruct students to open their kidblog accounts, find the post with the
title year 8 chemistry weebly and follow the link.
2. Allow students time to read through task one and two.
3. Before students begin with task one bring their attention to the task
guidelines projected at the front of the room (please see attached
document). Keep guidelines up for the remainder of the lesson.
4. Instruct students to follow the instructions given to them on the
weebly i.e. find a partner and get an iPad.
5. Assist students as needed as they take photos of each item with their
iPads.
6. After ~5 minutes direct students to begin looking at the resources
linked to each QR code.
7. Draw students attention to task two as outlined on the Weebly.
8. Remind students that they do not need to present all the information
given to them on their Piktochart, but rather the information that they
deem relevant.
9. Assist students as needed in creating their Piktochar

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

1) Students to upload their Piktochart to their Kidblogs so that other
students can view their information.
Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)
1) Students to research one compound of their choice that was not
presented in todays lesson and add this information to their
piktochart before the commencement of the next lesson.
