Presentation Secondary School,

Wexford
'Loving Literacy Week 2015'
Theme: 'The Power of Poetry'
Monday 2nd to Friday 6th March 2015
- Every day this week, from 10am-10.15am, the school will participate in D. E. A. R. (Drop Everything and
Read) - all students and teachers should have a novel and/or relevant reading material for this block of
time every day this week. If this time is hitting contact time with State exam classes, then it is at the
discretion of the teacher to proceed or not

- Teachers to fill out a poster (to be put into your files) to state what/who their favourite poem/poet is and
a brief description why. The poem can be in any language. This poster will be displayed on the door of the
respective classrooms

- 'World Book Day' takes place on Thursday 5th March. To celebrate this, ALL students and staff are

invited to dress up as their favourite character from a book/favourite author or a costume inspired by a

book. Students will come in to school and leave the school in uniform, changing in school. There should be
no delays in arriving to class @ 9am

- 2nd and 3rd year students to be issued with the Recommended Reading List during English classes this
week

- Literary themed quiz (one question per day), students can put their entries into a box at reception. Two

Senior students and two Junior students will be selected for book vouchers from Wexford Book Centre

- The Senior Social Area and Fiction Library will have visual displays highlighting the power of poetry, with
a particular focus on the RT 'A Poem for Ireland' competition, the 'Yeats 2015' celebrations,
commemoration of World War One poets etc.

- A Reading Tree will be placed outside the Fiction Library this week, where students can attach what their
favourite book is or recommend a book to other students

- A selection of students and teachers will be invited to use the intercom, throughout the week, to recite
their favourite poems (in English, Irish, French, German and Spanish if so desired)

- 1st and 2nd years - Creating alternative book covers for popular books (with help from the Art
Department)

- English teachers are encouraged to do the Speed Book Dating exercise during their fiction library visits,
arrange students at different desks and they have 30 seconds to pitch a favourite book/author and
move off to the next person and so on.

- Book Swap/Donate a Book in the Fiction Library this week, where students can bring in a book they no
longer want and/or swap it with another student

While there will be minor disruptions to classes, I would greatly appreciate it if all teachers could support this
week as best they can. Everyone can promote good literacy skills in their own classroom, in their own way.
This week is a part of the school's S. I. P. on Literacy so it would be appreciated if you can promote the

week to students in the lead up to and during the week. It was a great success last year, so let's hope for
the same this year.

- REMEMBER TO DRESS UP ON THURSDAY 5TH FOR 'WORLD BOOK DAY'! MANY

THANKS TO ALL TEACHERS WHO DID LAST YEAR, IT WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE
MORE TEACHERS OUT IN FORCE THIS YEAR!
Many thanks to all,
Joe,

School Literacy Link-Teacher
