Third Sunday of LentYear B

Initiation & the Community

Orla Wright

Lent is a time where traditionally there is an extra focus on the full

Initiation, and reception of new members into our community. Whether it be
welcoming new members through the R.C.I.A. or children preparing for the reception
of Confirmation and First Holy Communion they are all presented to our
Community, who are asked to support these individuals in their journey towards full
Communion with the catholic church. Archdiocesan policy states The Sacraments of

Initiation- Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist- mark the commitment of both the
individual and the community to the lifelong process which will bring them to the
full stature of Christenable them to carry out the mission of the entire people of
Godin the Church and in the world. How are we as a community to show our
commitment to this lifelong process? The answer is simply by word, action and
prayer. We need to pray for these people, we need to teach them by the example of
our own lives and above all we need to welcome them with open arms to our
church rejoicing in the strengthening of the Body of Christ. As part of this process I
invite parishioners to look at the childrens All about me sheets that are starting to
adorn our church walls. I ask everyone to pick a few of these sheets and sign their
names on them to show the children that you are committing to pray for that
particular child as they journey towards full initiation.
But more than that, I want
us all to be mindful of new families coming to church, to welcome them into this
house of God, rejoicing in a church potentially filled with noisy children because that
is when our house of God becomes a home to all of Gods people. It is not our job
to protect the pew spaces in case someone sits in the wrong place, we are not called
to judge the childrens manners or their lack of experience in a Mass setting. Our only
role is to nurture these families with love, welcoming them into our community of
which they are already a part of and praying for and acting out the grace of God in
their lives. God Bless and have a great week.

MAKING CONNECTIONS Next weekend we will be undertaking an

effort to re-connect with all our parishioners who come to Mass . During this year we
want to continue a way of being church with all families who have been coming here
for many years, and with those who are relatively new. We believe that our faithful
parishioners are the heart of our Catholic Community and our desire is that each truly
begins to experience a real sense of belonging, welcome and hospitality. Next weekend
will be Making Connections weekend and we shall be inviting all those attending Mass
to complete a parish Connection Card. These Connection Cards allow the parish
leadership to design and plan meaningful ways to be relevant as Church and as a people
of welcome, now and into the future. It will assist us to build upon the formation that has
already begun. This initiative will apply to ALL parishioners - old & new. Parishioner
Connection Cards will be available at all Masses next weekend. One card per
household to be completed. Our aim is that all parishioners complete a Connection Card.

Please remember in your prayers ...

Rites of Scrutiny

On the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent we

celebrate the Rites of Scrutiny in our parish and
for those people who are preparing for the
reception of the sacraments of initiation at
Easter, people known as the Elect, it is a time for
self-searching and repentance, a turning towards
God. A Scrutiny is a rite in which people are
encouraged to uncover all that is weak, defective
and sinful in their hearts, so that God may heal
it, and to recognize all that is upright, strong and
good. These rites complete the conversion of the
Elect and deepen their resolve to hold fast to
Christ and his Church. We have two people in
our parish community who have been chosen as
Elect, Winnie Nguyen and Geoff Grocke who are
preparing for baptism, confirmation and
eucharist at Easter. Joan Morris and Tom
Whitney are Candidates, who are already
baptized in another Christian tradition and seek
full communion with the Catholic Church
through the sacraments of confirmation and
eucharist. On these three Sundays in Lent we
celebrate the Rites of Scrutiny with our Elect, a
process of conversion, a turning away from one
way of life towards another, the way of
following the Gospel message of Jesus. This
journey of conversion is a most challenging one
and the Rites of Scrutiny call down on our Elect
the gifts of healing, forgiveness and strength.
The Gospel readings for these Sundays are
specially chosen to connect with the Rites of
Scrutiny. So we will be using the readings from
Year A at all Masses. Each of these three gospel
texts are stories of conversion - the woman at
the well, the man born blind and the raising of
Lazarus. The woman at the well is moved to
accept the living water Jesus offers her and she is
transformed from ignorance to searching, to
revelation and finally conviction and testimony.
The man born blind is transformed from the
darkness of blindness to the light of an active and
seeing disciple. And in the story of Lazarus, his
sisters come to the realization that Jesus gives life
from death. These stories reflect the journey of
faith and conversion for Winnie, Geoff, Joan and
Tom and they also reflect the faith journey for
each one of us. Let us pray for them on their
journey to the Easter sacraments and let us pray
for each other.

Matt Hobart, father to Alexia (year 1) and
Zach (year 3) at Our Lady of Grace School
was diagnosed with a brain tumour
approx. 18 months ago. Since being told
his tumour was inoperable, Matt & Joanne
sought the opinion of Dr Charlie Teo in
Sydney, where he has offered help, and are
prepared to remove part of Matts tumour.
This procedure is incredibly expensive,
therefore OLOG school have organised a
raffle to raise money to assist with the
costings. Let us pray for Matt and his

family over this time.

Raffle Tickets are available for purchase

from the OLOG school front office (8295

are $10 each or 3 for $20. 30 prizes to be
won.
Thank you for your support.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

(RCIA) Stational Mass

Archbishop Wilson invites all parishioners to

celebrate the Southern Deanery Stational Mass
at the Church of the Nativity, London Road
Aberfoyle Park on Friday, 13th March at
7.30pm. Parishioners may see this as their
Lenten pilgrimage in preparation for renewal
of their Baptism vows at Easter. Candidates
who are presented at the Mass are those who
are already baptized and are seeking full
communion with the Catholic Church through
the sacraments of confirmation and holy
communion. We have two Candidates this
year, Joan Morris and Tom Whitney, and they
will be welcomed by the Vicar General, Fr
Philip Marshall at the Mass. Your support for
Joan and Tom, by being present at this Mass,
would be greatly appreciated.

Ministers to the Sick Meeting

Next Thursday there is a meeting for all
Ministers to the Sick and Home bound and
Nursing Homes at 7.00pm in the Parish
House. We take the occasion to express
appreciation for all that those ministers do on
our behalf. It is important for us all to pray in
solidarity with the sick and homebound and
those in Nursing Homes as we relate to one
another as the Body of Christ.
