WTR 2005 #5 A MabS RAYS Introduction / The: number of people taking the Japanese Language Proficiency Test LPT) is increasing every year. Similarly the number of Japanese learners who have finished studying basic Japanese grammar and wish to confirm their knowledge by taking the Level 3 exam before moving on to more advanced study is also increasing. ‘Complete Master Series texts covering grammar exercises for Levels 1 and 2 of the JLPT were published a number of years ago, and this resulted in many people asking why there wasn't a similar type of book for Level 3. Thus, this grammar exercise textbook was published to meet the demands of people wishing to take the Level 3 test as well as their teachers. This book is roughly divided into seven sections based on the Test Content Specifications for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (Revised Edition), which was created and edited by the Japan Foundation and the Association of International Education, Japan, and published by Bonjinsha. The usage of Japanese and the example questions have been drawn up by using previous tests as a reference and by anticipating the questions to be encountered in the future Moreover, the vocabulary and expressions from the previously mentioned book have been used as much as possible. This book is designed for use as @ textbook in class, but it can also be used by people who study Japanese alone. The meanings, grammatical constructions, example sentences, and advice are given in such a way that the learner can judge his own ability by doing the practice questions. To use the textbook more easily, there are explanations in English and written kana alongside the Chinese Characters. ‘We would like to particularly thank Ms. Akiko Fujii, Ms. Yoshiko Tsutsumi, and Ms. Tomoko Sano, amongst others, at 3A Corporation for their helpful and instructive advice on completing this book. If this book helps people to pass the Level 3 exam, as well as their teachers, we will be delighted. If you have any comments or opinions concerning this book please contact us. To Users of Th is Textbook | —Explanatory Notes— This book is designed for Japanese language leamers aiming to take Level 3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. It enables them to improve their proficiency in Japanese easily and with certainty by revising basic grammar and sentence patterns. This book consists of 7 Parts: in Parts I to V, the grammatical items or structures are arranged ording to the verb conjugation found in the sentence pattern or its fun tion; Part VI explains particles; and Part VII other grammatical points. Each grammatical structure is numbered (1 ~ 120) for easy reference. In the process of selecting the grammatical structures, past test questions (especially those after 1995) were analyzed and classified according to mainly Level 3 grammar id expre s Level 4 materials were also ion patterns (somet cluded) as listed in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test: Test Content Specifications. The classification chosen ates item recognition with all important items being covered in this book 1, Vocabulary and Writing System In order to be as close as possible to actual test questions, example sentences and exercises, as a rule, contain only the vocabulary that appears in the Vocabulary List for Levels 3 and 4 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (exceptions being katakana words and names of drinks, food, ete., often used in daily conversation). With regards to the writing system, Kanji characters are limited to those of Levels 3 and 4 with hiragana being used in place of more advanced Kanji All Kanji characters are shown with their hiragana readings, so that learners who are weak in Kanji can concentrate on the grammatical points 10 2. Structure Presentation “h grammatical structure is presented as follows: Where differences exist, each item is listed and numbered ((1], 2), [3]) and treated individuall Meanings EEEY The meaning of the structure or item is given in English. When a structure may have more than one meaning, these are shown separately (A, 8), C). Additional explanation is given in < > where considered necessary to make the meaning clearer or where no exact English equivalent exists. Conjunctive forms HEA 1) The way of connecting the stem and ending forms of the structure is shown based on the following four parts of speech: verb (V). adjective (\ adj), na-adjective (“-adj) and noun (N); however this does not always cover all possible ways of connecting the structure. Only essential ways of connecting the item for grammar questions at Level 3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test are shown. 2) Parts of speech and conjunctive forms, as a rule, are shown as follows: [verb (¥)] V%\ form iwanai (iow) V0
